أَلَمْ يَعْلَمُواْ أَنَّ اللّهَ يَعْلَمُ سِرَّهُمْ وَنَجْوَاهُمْ وَأَنَّ اللّهَ عَلاَّمُ الْغُيُوبِ
Alam yaAAlamoo anna Allaha yaAAlamu sirrahum wanajwahum waanna Allaha AAallamu alghuyoobi

The Aya says:
Have they not known that Allah knows what their private and shared secrets and that Allah is very knowledgeable of the unperceived?!

My personal note:
The term SIRR is translated as inner secret and that it applies to any secret whether held inside the person or shared with others. However, the term Najwa is about private communication that is meant to stay within a select group of people. So the terms “sirrahum wanajwahum” encompasses any form of secret they hold whether kept within the person or shared with a select group.

Translation of the transliterated words:

Alam: Have they not?/ did they not?
Note: this is a question in the negative that takes the form of “Have not?/ Did not?”

Note: YaAALAMOO is derived from the root Ain-L-M and it means knowing/knowledge or knowledge of facts. YaAALAMOO is an action that is being completed or will be completed. Alghuyoobi: the unperceived/ the unseen
Note: the root is GH-Y-B or GHAIN-Y-B and it means unperceived in general. One concrete word is the word for thick forest where many things are hidden and unperceived as opposed to the open desert that the Arabs were familiar with. This is then conceptually taken to anything that disappears or becomes as if it disappeared in the forest. ALGHUYOOBI means the unseen or the unperceived.

فَأَعْقَبَهُمْ نِفَاقًا فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ إِلَى يَوْمِ يَلْقَوْنَهُ بِمَا أَخْلَفُواْ اللّهَ مَا وَعَدُوهُ وَبِمَا كَانُواْ يَكْذِبُونَ
FaaAAqabahum nifaqan fee quloobihim ila yawmi yalqawnahu bima akhlafoo Allaha mawaAAadoohu wabima kanoo yakthiboona

The Aya says:
So He made their consequence hypocrisy in their hearts until the day they meet Him, by their reneging Allah what they promised Him and by their being untruthful.

My personal note:
This is a very significant Aya. It declares one of the forms of punishment for sins that is probably the most scary and that is making the hearts and minds vulnerable to disbelief and falling farther into darkness. The Aya also mentions the important sins that lead to this form of punishment. They are reneging on promises that we make to Allah and being untruthful. May Allah protect us from both of those sins.

Translation of the transliterated words:

FaaAAqabahum: So, he made them followed/ trailed/ He made their consequence/ He proceeded
Note: FA means therefore or so or then. aAAQABAHUM is derived from the root Ain-Qaf-B and it means back of foot. This is the concrete meaning and it is used to mean end, back or behind including the consequence of a person’s action and it can also mean obstacle. aAAQABAHUM is an action that is completed. It means: the action of making the object (HUM= them) get the consequence or being trailed or followed by another object (Nifaqan= hypocrisy) happened by the subject (third person singular pointing to Allah.
Nifaqan: Hypocrisy/ hidden agenda
Note: the root is N-F-Qaf. To explain it I use another derivative NAFAQ which means Tunnel. The tunnel is connection underground from one place to another. Therefore the essence of the word Tunnel is to “let Good/Useful things go to others under cover”. NIFAQAN means hypocrisy or hidden agenda.

quloobihim: their hearts/ hearts and minds/ and their insides
Note: The root is Qaf-L-B and it means turning 180 degrees or upside down. The word is used for heart, because it is the organ that changes it’s moods often. Therefore QALB is our thoughts and emotions or what is inside us. QULOOBI are hearts and minds of or thoughts and emotions of. HIM means them.
Ila: until/ towards
yawmi: day when/ day of
Note: YAWMI is derived from the root Y-W-M and it means day. YAWMA means day of or day when.
Yalqawnahu: they meet him
Note: the root is L-Qaf-Y and it means receiving as a concept which would be understood more specifically according to the sentence. Concrete uses of the word are a female that gets pregnant easily, therefore she received the sperm well. It is also used for the birds that hunt because they receive the prey easily and so forth. YALQAWNA is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of meeting face to face between the subjects (third person plural) and the object (HU= him and points to Allah) is happening or will be happening.
Bima: by what
Note: BI signifies an attachment or close linkage between what is before and what is after it. In a Verbal sentence it can mean attachment to the action or to the subject as it does the action. This attachment can then signify many things according to the verb and to the sentence and so on. In this sentence it signifies tools of why they were taken.

Akhlafoo: they reneged/ they opposed/ they went behind
Note: the root is KH-L-F and it means behind in time or place or any other plane of thought. For time, it takes the meaning of what happens after or the future. AKHLAFOO is an action that is completed. In this context it takes the meaning of: The action of reneging/ opposing/ going behind happened by the subject (third person plural).

Note: the root is K-TH-B and it means a untrue. Conceptually, it can be extended at times to mean a lie, although the core of the meaning is untruth, whether it is a lie or not, conscious or not. YAKTHIBOON is an action that is happening or will be happening. It means: the action of lying or saying untruths is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person plural). Because it was preceded by the kanoo (they used to) then it is actually in the past despite the form of the verb being in the present or future.

فَلَمَّا آتَاهُم مِّن فَضْلِهِ بَخِلُواْ بِهِ وَتَوَلَّواْ وَّهُم مُّعْرِضُونَ
Falamma atahum min fadlihi bakhiloo bihi watawallaw wahum muAAridoona

The Aya says:
So when He gave them from His bounty, they held on to it and moved away while avoiding/ignoring.

My personal note:
The Aya continues the theme that started in the previous Aya. It brings about that after their promise, they were provided with what they asked for but then became stingy and not sharing and moved away trying to avoid or ignoring their charity obligations.

This means that if one is blessed with money then he or she is obligated to give to charity. The money we have is a test in how we use it.

Translation of the transliterated words:

Falamma: So when

Note: the root is Hamza-T-Y and it means coming with determination. The concrete word is for the water that flows in a place where it did not rain, therefore suggesting that the water came from somewhere else. ATA is an action that is completed. Watawallaw: and they moved away/ including they moved away

As a conceptual meaning it has many applications such as: standing in the way or closing the road, but it also means presenting and make something seen, because things are seen better if one sees their width. MuAARIDOON in this context points to avoiding any contact or presentation so as not to give or share.

وَمِنْهُم مَّنْ عَاهَدَ اللّهَ لَئِنْ آتَانَا مِن فَضْلِهِ لَنَصَّدَّقَنَّ وَلَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ
Waminhum man AAahada Allaha lain atana min fadlihi lanassaddaqanna walanakoonanna mina alssaliheena

The Aya says:
And amongst them who promised Allah that if He provided us from His bounty then we shall indeed give to charity and we shall indeed be amongst the righteous.

My personal note:
This is a beginning of a statement that will be completed in the coming Ayat. It brings about how people make promises to Allah at times but perhaps rarely meet them or get to become arrogant instead.

يَحْلِفُونَ بِاللّهِ مَا قَالُواْ وَلَقَدْ قَالُواْ كَلِمَةَ الْكُفْرِ وَكَفَرُواْ بَعْدَ إِسْلاَمِهِمْ وَهَمُّواْ بِمَا لَمْ يَنَالُواْ وَمَا نَقَمُواْ إِلاَّ أَنْ أَغْنَاهُمُ اللّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ مِن فَضْلِهِ فَإِن يَتُوبُواْ يَكُ خَيْرًا لَّهُمْ وَإِن يَتَوَلَّوْا يُعَذِّبْهُمُ اللّهُ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ وَمَا لَهُمْ فِي الأَرْضِ مِن وَلِيٍّ وَلاَ نَصِيرٍ
Yahlifoona biAllahi ma qaloo walaqad qaloo kalimata alkufri wakafaroo baAAda islamihim wahammoo bima lam yanaloo wama naqamoo illa an aghnahumu Allahu warasooluhu min fadlihi fain yatooboo yaku khayran lahum wain yatawallaw yuAAaththibhumu Allahu AAathaban aleeman fee alddunya waalakhirati wama lahum fee alardi min waliyyin wala naseerin
The Aya says:
They swear by Allah they did not say while they actually said the statement of rejection and rejected after having attained Islam. And they proceeded to what they could not achieve. And they did not detest except that Allah and His messenger enriched them from His bounty. So, if they repent then it is better for them, while if they do not, then Allah will punish them painful punishment in this life and the next and they have no protector in the land nor helper.
My personal note:
The Aya elaborates on the hypocrites that they do say something but deny it and swear otherwise. It also brings about that being rich or self sufficient is perhaps a challenge to some people because it makes them arrogant and more likely to reject the truth. So, we ask Allah to give us what is best for our spiritual life and our relationship with him.

Note: WA here is for contrasting with the previous word. ALAKHIRATI is derived from the root Hamza-KH-R and it means remaining. ALAKHIRATI means the remaining or the later. This, in turn means the later life or the life after death.

Note: the root is N-Sad-R and it means aid or support or backing whether in need or not but that is decisive in nature and can be the one that leads to a decisive victory and so on. NASEERIN is the supporter and helper and the one that takes you to prominence.
