وَإِذَا أَذَقْنَا النَّاسَ رَحْمَةً مِّن بَعْدِ ضَرَّاء مَسَّتْهُمْ إِذَا لَهُم مَّكْرٌ فِي آيَاتِنَا قُلِ اللّهُ أَسْرَعُ مَكْرًا إِنَّ رُسُلَنَا يَكْتُبُونَ مَا تَمْكُرُونَ

Waitha athaqna alnnasa rahmatan min baAAdi darraa massathum itha lahum makrun fee ayatina quli Allahu asraAAu makran inna rusulana yaktuboona ma tamkuroona

 

The Aya says:

And when We make the people taste mercy after having had an affliction then they have scheming in our signs.  Say:  “Allah is faster in scheming.  Indeed, our messengers register what you scheme.”

 

My personal note:

The Aya points that a good number humans are not thankful when they are relieved from a hardship that had afflicted them.   They dismiss the role of Allah in that relief.  The Aya reminds us that Allah is aware of this and warns us not to take God for granted.

 

Translation of the transliterated words:

Waitha: and when/ and If and when

Athaqna: made taste/ made experience

Note:  ATHAQNA is derived from the root TH-W-Qaf and it means taste in all it’s aspects. In a conceptual fashion, it is the sensation.   ATHAQNA is an action that is completed.  It means the action of making the object (ALNNASA=the people) taste or experience another object (RAHMATAN=mercy/ grace) happened by the subject (first person plural).

Alnnasa: the people/ the society

Note: the root is Hamza-N-S and it means socializing. ALNNAS means the people or humans.

 

Rahmatan: Mercy/ grace

Note: the root R-Ha-M and it means womb in concrete. This can be extended to all the positive qualities that the womb provides to the fetus. RAHMATAN means mercy or grace.

Min: from

baAAdi: after

Note: the root is B-Ain-D and it means further in time or space. In space it means farther in distance and in time, it means after. BaAADI here means: after.

 

Darraa: Harm

Note:   DARRAA is derived from the root Dhad-R-R and it means to harm or opposite of benefit. Concrete word is DAREER and it means blind person or a person that is afflicted with weakness and illness. Conceptually, it covers any kind of significant harm or affliction. DARRAA is harm or affliction of or the harm that afflicted

 

Massathum: touched them/ afflicted them

Note: the root is M-S-S and it means touching. Conceptually, it takes many meanings that are related to touch and they range from just touch to deep influence and so on according to the context. MASSAT is an action that is completed. It means: the action of touching or affecting the object (HUM= them) by the subject (DARRAA= harm)

 

Itha: then

Lahum: to them belongs

Makrun: scheming

Note: the root is M-K-R and it means planning discreetly or in a subtle manner or scheming. MAKRUN is hidden plan or scheming.

Fee: in

Ayatina: our signs

Note: AYAT is derived from the root Hamza-Y-H and it means sign. AYATI means signs of and in the context of the Qur’an it points to the sentences and statements.   NA means us

 

Quli: Say/ respond

Note: QUL is derived from the root Qaf-W-L and it means saying in any way possible. QUL is a demand or request addressed to a singular.  It means: say or respond. 

 

Allahu: Allah

asraAAu: faster

Note:  The root is S-R-Ain and it means quick and fast. The concrete words related to this root include the neck and the back of the horse where one taps to make them go faster.  ASRaAAu means faster

Makran: scheming

Note: the root is M-K-R and it means planning discreetly or in a subtle manner or scheming. MAKRAN is hidden plan or scheming.

 

Inna: indeed

Rusulana: our messengers/ envoys

Note: RUSULANAis derived from the root R-S-L and it means to envoy someone or a group of people or animals. The concrete word is RASL and it means a group of people or animals that were sent by their owners or senders. RUSULA means messengers of and is the plural of Rasul who is the one that is sent and is used to mean the messenger because he was sent by the sender to the receiver. NA means ours.

Yaktuboona: write/ register

Note: the root K-T-B and it means putting things together as in grouping the herd together or closing the lips or writing (the most common use), because in writing, one puts the letters and the ideas together.  YAKTUBOON is an action that is happening or will be happening.  It means the action of writing or registering is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person plural)

Ma: what

Tamkuroona:  you (plural) scheme

Note: the root is M-K-R and it means planning discreetly or in a subtle manner or scheming.  TAMKUROONA is an action that is happening or will be happening.  It means the act of scheming is happening or will be happening by the subject (second person plural).

وَيَقُولُونَ لَوْلاَ أُنزِلَ عَلَيْهِ آيَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِ فَقُلْ إِنَّمَا الْغَيْبُ لِلّهِ فَانْتَظِرُواْ إِنِّي مَعَكُم مِّنَ الْمُنتَظِرِينَ

Wayaqooloona lawla onzila AAalayhi ayatun min rabbihi faqul innama alghaybu lillahi faintathiroo innee maAAakum mina almuntathireena

 

The Aya says:

And they say why not descend on him a sign.  So, respond:  “The unperceived belongs only to Allah, so wait, I am waiting with you”

 

My personal note:

The Aya responds to their claim that they need a sign for them to believe.  The response is that if you wait a sign or a resolution to the matter will happen. 

 

Translation of the transliterated words:

Wayaqooloona: and they say

Note:  WA in here is for start of a new sentence that is linked to the previous one.  YAQOOLOONA is derived from the root Qaf-W-L and it means saying or communicating in any way possible whether in words or otherwise. YAQOOLOONA is an action that is being completed or will be completed that is derived from the root. It means the action of saying happened by the subject (third person plural). This, in turn means: they say or they happen to say or communicate.

 

Lawla: why not?

Onzila: brought down

Note: the root is N-Z-L and it carries the meaning of arrival to stay and descent. One concrete meaning is the descent of the person from his or her horse or camel as they arrive at the place where they plan to stay.  ONZILA is an action that is completed.  It means the action of bringing down the object (Ayatun) happened by an undeclared subject.  Because it was preceded by the LAWLA (why not?) then the action is negated and as if the statement demands the action that has not happened.

AAalayhi: upon him

Ayatun: a sign

Note: AYAT is derived from the root Hamza-Y-H and it means sign. AYATUN means a sign.   

Min: from

Rabbihi: His nurturing Lord

Note: the root is R-B-B and it means nurturing and Lordship as two components of the meaning that can be present together or one at a time according to the context of the sentence.   RABBI is nurturing Lord of.  HI is for HIM.

 

Faqul: then respond

Note:  FA means then or so and so on.  QUL is derived from the root Qaf-W-L and it means saying in any way possible. QUL is a demand or request addressed to a singular.  It means: say or respond

Innama: It is nothing but

Alghaybu: the unperceived

Note: ALGHAYBU is derived from the root GH-Y-B or GHAIN-Y-B and it means unperceived in general. One concrete word is the word for thick forest where many things are hidden and unperceived as opposed to the open desert that the Arabs were familiar with. This is then conceptually taken to any thing that disappears or becomes as if it disappeared in the forest. ALGHAYBU here means the unperceived.

Lillahi: Belongs to Allah

Faintathiroo: then wait

Note: FA means then or therefore or so.  INTATHIROO is derived from the root N-THa-R and it means seeing/observing/watching with one side of the meaning stronger than the others according to the situation. At times it means giving reprieve or giving time to correct things and that stems from the observing/watching as if it is time of observation/watching or waiting or given time.  INTATHIROO is an order or a request addressed to a group.  It means Wait or wait to see.

Innee: I

maAAakum: with you/ join you

mina: of/ from

almuntathireena:  the waiting

Note: the root is N-THa-R and it means seeing/observing/watching with one side of the meaning stronger than the others according to the situation. At times it means giving reprieve or giving time to correct things and that stems from the observing/watching as if it is time of observation/watching or waiting or given time.  ALMUNTATHIREEN are those who are waiting.

وَمَا كَانَ النَّاسُ إِلاَّ أُمَّةً وَاحِدَةً فَاخْتَلَفُواْ وَلَوْلاَ كَلِمَةٌ سَبَقَتْ مِن رَّبِّكَ لَقُضِيَ بَيْنَهُمْ فِيمَا فِيهِ يَخْتَلِفُونَ

 

Wama kana alnnasu illa ommatan wahidatan faikhtalafoo walawla kalimatun sabaqat min rabbika laqudiya baynahum feema feehi yakhtalifoona

 

The Aya says:

And the society was but one nation/ideology, then they conflicted.  So had not been for a preceding statement from your nurturing Lord then would have been concluded between them in what they differed.

 

My personal note:

UMMA often points to nation as a way of thinking where it knows where it came from and where it is heading.  The Aya mentions that the people were united before they started to have conflicting points of view and ideology.  The Aya alludes that a certain preceding statement from Allah allowed this to happen and it happened for some reason in Allah’s wisdom.

 

Translation of the transliterated words:

 

Wama: and not

Kana: were

Note: It is derived from the root K-W-N and it means being.  KANA is an action that is completed that is derived from the root. It means: the action of being happened by the subject (third personal singular or plural). 

 

Alnnasu: the people/ the society

Note:  ALNASSU is derived from the root Hamza-N-S and it means socializing. ALNNAS means the people or society.

Illa: if not/ nothing except

Ommatan: a nation

Note: OMMA is derived from the root Hamza-M-M and it means mother or sources/origin if said as UMM and destination if said as AMM. OMMA means in this context nation and that is because it is a group that have the same origin and is moving to the same destination.  Often times it points to outlook and ideology and so on.

Wahidatan: single/ one

WAHIDATAN means one Note: the root is W-Ha-D and it means one.

Faikhtalafoo: then they differed// Then they conflicted

Note: FA means then.  IKHTALAFOO is derived from the root  KH-L-F and it means behind in time or place or any other plane of thought. For time, it takes the meaning of what happens after or the future. IKHTALAFOO is an action that happened.  It means that action of putting each other behind each other happened in an interactive fashion by the subject (third person plural).  This in turn points to differing and  conflicting with each other since conflict and difference is about jostling for who will be first and who pushes the other behind.

Walawla: and had not been for

Kalimatun: a statement

Note: KALIMATUN is derived from the root K-L-M and it means wound or opening of the skin and that is the concrete word. It is also used to mean words or statements because those are the products of the opening of the mouth, which is an opening of the skin. Here it is used for word or statement. KALIMATUN means statement.

Sabaqat: preceded

Note:  SABAQAT is derived from the root S-B-Qaf and it means being ahead in time or place or in a race. Conceptually, it is used for preceding and for racing. SABAQAT is an action that is completed. It means the action of preceding happened by the subject (third person singular or plural)

Min: from

Rabbika: Your nurturing Lord

Note: the root is R-B-B and it means nurturing and Lordship as two components of the meaning that can be present together or one at a time according to the context of the sentence.   RABBI is nurturing Lord of.  KA is for singular you.

 

Laqudiya: Then would have been concluded

Note:  LA is the answer to the conditional sentence that started at the beginning.  QUDIYA is derived from the root Qaf-Dhad-Y and it means a mandate that one makes to completion of it and anything in between. It points to determination at the beginning and the finishing of it towards the end. The meaning of the word is according to the sentence, sometimes the sentence allows the whole range and at others, part of the range of the meaning. QUDIYA is an action that is completed or concluded by an undeclared subject.

Baynahum: between them

Feema: in what

Feehi: subject/ in it

Yakhtalifoona:  they dispute/ they differ/ they have conflict

Note:  YAKHTALIFOOM is derived from the root  KH-L-F and it means behind in time or place or any other plane of thought. For time, it takes the meaning of what happens after or the future.
