ذَلِكَ نَتْلُوهُ عَلَيْكَ مِنَ الآيَاتِ وَالذِّكْرِ الْحَكِيمِ
Thalika natloohu AAalayka mina alayati waalththikri alhakeemi
The Aya says:
That (knowledge), we recite it on you from the signs, and the wise mentioning and reminding.
My personal note:
The term Natloohu means following closely. It carries the meaning of reciting, because reciting means following closely one word after another. It also means following closely what is in it. So, the Aya carries the double meaning of reciting and also of following closely the same footsteps of the actions of Jesus, which are the same footsteps of all prophets and messengers of God.
ALTHTHIKR ALHAKEEM means the wise mentioning and reminding. This statement points to the Qur’an which includes wisdom and mentioning and reminding.
Translation of the transliterated words:
Thalika: That
Natloohu: We recite him/ We follow him closely
Note: the root is T-L-W and it means following closely. The concrete word that is derived from the root is the baby animal after it had been weaned from the breast and who follows his mother everywhere closely. The word means the following closely and also reciting, because that involves following each word with another. NATLOO is an action is happening or will happening that is derived from the root. It means the following closely or the reciting is happening or will be happening by the subject (second person plural) to the object is HU which means him and points to the news of Jesus.
AAalayka: on you (singular)

Waalththikri: And remembrance/ and the mentioning and reminding
Note: WA means and. ALTHTHIKRI is derived from the root TH-K-R and it means mention and remember and remind at the same time. The concrete word is something running on the tongue as if speaking it. Another concrete word is male or the male organ. The relationship between the two is not very clear and they can be different words that share the sound but have different root. It could be that the male is considered the active organ and that memory is an active process, but that is only a theory. ALTHTHIKR means the mentioning and the reminding in this case. The mentioning and reminding is considered the Qur’an here.
Alhakeemi: the wise
Note: the root Ha-K-M and it means the steer that steers the animal. This word is used for ruling and judging as well as other meanings that contain steering as part of the concept. ALHAKEEM means the wise or the steering. The steering means the entity that steers in the best way possible using the best tools of knowledge, compassion, justice and mercy, and that is wisdom.

Waamma allatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati fayuwaffeehim ojoorahum waAllahu la yuhibbu alththalimeena
The Aya says:
And as for the ones who made themselves safe (in God and his message) and did the deeds of benefit, then He (God) will make them meet their dues, their compensations, and Allah does not love the transgressors.
My personal note:
This Aya brings to our attention that God is just. He gives the dues to each and every one of us. It also reminds us that God does not love those who make their decisions in darkness and those are the transgressors. Here, God is saying that He is just since he does not love the one who is unjust. God is reassuring us of His justice.
The theme of light and darkness occur in Arabic where light means decisions made right whereas darkness means decisions of transgression and error and injustice.
The deeds of benefit are any deed that leads to benefit in a positive way whether spiritual or material or any other way.

The Aya says:
As for the ones who rejected, then I will make them suffer, tight suffering, in this life and the remaining (life), and (there will) not belong to them of supporters at time of need.
My personal note:
This Aya continues the promise given by God to Jesus that those who rejected Jesus will receive suffering in the life of now and the next life. God assures Jesus that they will have no one to help them.

Ith qala Allahu ya AAeesa innee mutawaffeeka warafiAAuka ilayya wamutahhiruka mina allatheena kafaroo wajaAAilu allatheena ittabaAAooka fawqa allatheena kafaroo ila yawmi alqiyamati thumma ilayya marjiAAukum faahkumu baynakum feema kuntum feehi takhtalifoona
The Aya says:
As/when Allah said to Jesus: “O Jesus, I am taking you and raising you to Me, and cleansing you from the ones who rejected and I am making the ones who followed you above the ones who rejected till the day of judgement. Then, to Me (is) your (plural) return. So, I will judge between you in what you happened to be differing in.
My personal note:
The statement that Jesus was taken by God is an area where some people claim this meant the death of Jesus, while others say that Jesus is not dead. This statement can mean death but it does not have to mean death. Therefore, the insistence on death may be too zealous and inappropriate.
Another point to make is related to the statement: “and I am making those who followed you above those who rejected till the day of judgement”. This is a prophecy that has narrow and wide understandings. The narrow understanding would be the thought of Christians being dominant over Jews. The wider understanding would include that those who followed Jesus, and this includes Muslims, will be dominant over those who rejected him, and this encompasses anyone who rejected Jesus’ message no matter what origin he or she may come from.

Therefore, in additional to meaning write us, it has the equally correct meaning of put us together with, or make us gathered with the other witnesses of the truth.

The Aya says:
Verily, Allah (is) my nurturing Lord and your nurturing Lord. Therefore make your-selves his servants/slaves. This (is) a path made straight.
My personal note:
It is a reminder that God is the nurturing Lord for all and the path to him is through the message of his prophets.
The term: “make your-selves His servants/ slaves” is derived from the root Ain-B-D and it means slave or servant. When one makes himself a slave or a servant to an entity voluntarily, then it is mostly because of the power of love and devotion to that entity, although God has all the real power. It encompasses making our lives and actions dedicated to the service of God. This includes acts of worship, but also all our actions that we do in life, if God is our focus as we do them.

The Aya says:
Verily, Allah (is) my nurturing Lord and your nurturing Lord. Therefore make your-selves his servants/slaves. This (is) a path made straight.
My personal note:
It is a reminder that God is the nurturing Lord for all and the path to him is through the message of his prophets.
The term: “make your-selves His servants/ slaves” is derived from the root Ain-B-D and it means slave or servant. When one makes himself a slave or a servant to an entity voluntarily, then it is mostly because of the power of love and devotion to that entity, although God has all the real power. It encompasses making our lives and actions dedicated to the service of God. This includes acts of worship, but also all our actions that we do in life, if God is our focus as we do them.

This Aya continues the discourse between Jesus and the Israelites of his time. One thing that is significant is that he connected the consciousness of God to obeying him. This is the message of all the prophets is that obeying the prophet is part of the order from God.

The Aya says:
And a messenger to the children of Israel that I came to you (plural) with a sign from your nurturing Lord, that I shape to you (plural) from clay, like the shape of the bird, then blow in him so he becomes (an actual) bird, by Allah’s license. And I cure the blind and the leper and make the dead live by Allah’s license, and I inform you of what you eat and you store in your homes. Verily, in that (is) a sign to you (plural) if you happened to be people who make themselves safe (in God and his message).
My personal note:
This Aya points to the miracles that came with Jesus and includes curing of the ill and bringing the dead to life. The Qur’an puts a condition to those miracles at the end of each sentence using the term BIITHNI ILLAH which I translated as By GOD’s license. The word ITHNI carries the meaning of knowledge and approval. It means that Jesus would have not been able to do any of this except for God’s knowledge and approval or God’s license. This keeps the power only in God’s hands and means that the power that made the miracles happen came from God and not from Jesus.

My personal note:
The book and the wisdom are two words that often come together in the Qur’an. The book points to the knowledge in the book and within that wisdom is included. The wisdom is the arrival at the best decision and ruling and that comes, in part, from the book. Sometimes people understand the two terms as the same, but that is not true. They overlap but are not exactly the same. When they are together, then the book, in my opinion takes the understanding of the knowledge and the wisdom takes the understanding of putting the knowledge to use in the best fashion.
Many Muslims will say that the Sunna= repeated practice of the prophet is part of the wisdom since it gives us a glimpse of how the prophet used the knowledge that God gave him to reach the best decisions.

This continues the dialogue between Mary and the angel. When she asked how she will have a baby without being touched by man. The response was a reminder of the greatness of God.

The Aya says:
As/when the angels said: O Mary, verily Allah brings you glad tidings of a statement from him. He is called the messiah Isa son of Mary, dignified in this life and the remaining life and one of those who are made close (to God)
My personal note:
One of the questions that come related to Jesus is was Jesus the word or statement of God or was he a product of the statement from God. This passage seems to suggest that Jesus was the product of God’s word or statement and not the actual word himself. Here is how:
The word Kalimatun which means word or statement has a feminine designation. Yet the statement that followed was using the masculine and not feminine, therefore making Jesus and word as two separate entities and not one. If Jesus were the word, then one would have expected the Qur’an to continue with the feminine designation as in saying: Statement from him. She is called, rather than He is called.

Note: Bi suggests that what comes after it is either an association with the action, a tool of the action or an object of the action or any combination of the three. If bi serves as an object of the action then it serves as an emphasis of the action. The action here is the making true. KALIMATIN is derived from the root K-L-M and it means wound or opening of the skin and that is the concrete word. It is also used to mean words or statements because those are the products of the opening of the mouth, which is an opening of the skin. KALIMATIN is a word or statement.

Note: the root is M-S-Ha and it means swipe one surface opposite another. It could also mean anoint. ALMASEEHU means the one who is swiped or anointed. This is the same as the word Messiah in Jewish and Christian writings. This word however is not further explained in the Qur’an.

Wajeehan: dignified/ of high status
Note: the root is W-J-H and it means face. It is used conceptually to mean what meets the eye or what receives others, since the face is what we meet first. WAJEEHAN means one with lots of face. This then means one with dignity and high status in a sense.

Note: the root is D-N-W and it means nearness or nearing. ALDUNYA means the near. In this case, it points to this life that we are living in as the near.

Thalika min anbai alghaybi nooheehi ilayka wama kunta ladayhim ith yulqoona aqlamahum ayyuhum yakfulu maryama wama kunta ladayhim ith yakhtasimoona
The Aya says:
This (is) of the news of the unperceived. We communicate it to you subtly and you did not happen to be with them as they cast their bids who will be responsible for Mary’s welfare and you were not with them as they dispute between themselves (over who will be responsible for Mary’s welfare).
My personal note:
The Aya informs the prophet that he was not present when the incident of who will take care of Mary’s welfare was being disputed between the different elders who wanted to take care of her. It gives an idea of the importance of Mary to the people of that time and place.
