وَإِذْ زَيَّنَ لَهُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ أَعْمَالَهُمْ وَقَالَ لاَ غَالِبَ لَكُمُ الْيَوْمَ مِنَ النَّاسِ وَإِنِّي جَارٌ لَّكُمْ فَلَمَّا تَرَاءتِ الْفِئَتَانِ نَكَصَ عَلَى عَقِبَيْهِ وَقَالَ إِنِّي بَرِيءٌ مِّنكُمْ إِنِّي أَرَى مَا لاَ تَرَوْنَ إِنِّيَ أَخَافُ اللّهَ وَاللّهُ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ
Waith zayyana lahumu alshshaytanu aAAmalahum waqala la ghaliba lakumu alyawma mina alnnasi wainnee jarun lakum falamma taraati alfiatani nakasa AAala AAaqibayhi waqala innee bareeon minkum innee ara ma la tarawna innee akhafu Allaha waAllahu shadeedu alAAiqabi
The Aya says:
And as Satan adorned for them their actions and he said no one of the people will defeat you today and I am your protector. So, when the two groups saw each other he reneged stumbling backwards. He said “I dissociate from you. I see what you do not see. I fear Allah and Allah is severe in the consequence”.
My personal note:
This is a lesson to anyone that follows the direction of Satan in that he gives false promises then he leaves the human to fend for himself/ herself in a losing situation. So better for the human to be at peace with Allah and to return to Allah for the door towards coming back to Allah is always open.
Translation of the transliterated words:
Waith: and as
Zayyana: he cloaked/ he made look pretty/ he ornamented
Note: the root is Z-Y-N and it means what one puts on to add beauty to the look. It is used to cover clothes, jewelry and make up. For the land, it is the grass and the flowers. ZAYYANA is an action that is completed that is derived from the root. It means: the action of beautifying or ornamenting the object (aAAMALAHUM= their actions) happened by the subject (third person singular, ALSHSHAYTAN= Satan).
Lahumu: to them/ for them
alshshaytanu: Satan/ the one that is displaced from God’s mercy and works on displacing others.
Note: the root is SH-Ta-N and it means in one of the concrete meanings the long rope and in another the long rope at the well that one uses to get the bucket out of the water. The term is used to mean far and away (in all the planes of thought) as the long rope and it is also used for displacement or pulling away, as a parallel to the rope that pulls the bucked out of the water. ALSHAITAN is the one who is far or away (from God’s mercy) and who works at pulling others away through his long “rope”. It is the word used from Satan.
aAAmalahum: their actions
Note: the root is Ain-M-L and it means doing or work or action. aAAMALAHUM means their actions or their works.
Waqala: and he said/ and he communicated
Note: WA is a letter that links what is before with what is after. This link is through inclusion, either one is included in the other or they are all included in the bigger sentence or bigger picture. WA is often translated as an addition (and), but inclusion probably covers the meaning a little better. QALA is derived from the root Qaf-W-L and it means saying in any way possible. QALA is an action that is completed that is derived from the root. It means the action of saying happened by the subject (third person singular). This, in turn means: He said or responded or communicated.

Ghaliba: defeater
Note: the root is GHain-l-b or Gh-L-B and it means winning or defeating. Conceptually, it is used for difficulty imposed by an entity upon another. GHALIB is the winner or the defeater.

Note: the root is J-W-R and it means in concrete neighbor or an entity that is close to where one is. This is word is then used conceptually for support, neighborhood and at times for injustice because one lands not where he should be, Usually the word is positive in meaning if it is a JAR but negative if it is JOOR. JARUN here means protector and supporter.

This is the concrete meaning and it is used to mean end, back or behind including the consequence of a person’s action and it can also mean obstacle. AaaQIBAYHI means back of the feet and the picture of the one who is stumbling backwards in retreat.

Note: the root is Ain-Qaf-B and it means back of foot. This is the concrete meaning and it is used to mean end, back or behind including the consequence of a person’s action and it can also mean obstacle. ALAAiQABI here is the consequence and in this context, it is pointing to punishment as a consequence of our bad actions.
