وَمِنْهُمْ مَّن يَسْتَمِعُونَ إِلَيْكَ أَفَأَنتَ تُسْمِعُ ٱلصُّمَّ وَلَوْ كَانُواْ لاَ يَعْقِلُونَ

 

wamin`hum man yastamiʿūna ilayka afa-anta tus`miʿu l-ṣuma walaw kānū lā yaʿqilūna

 

The Aya says:

And some of them listen to you (singular). So will you make the deaf hear even though they do not contemplate?!

 

My personal note:

The word SUMM is used to for deaf people or people with blockage so things do not go to the destination.  Literally the deaf do not hear.  However, the statement here is throwing an example of people who close their minds or are dealing with such strong denial that even though they hear the person things do not sink in.  The Aya also tells us that this is their problem that they should open their minds and not keep them closed.  So, Muslims then should be defined by open mindedness and cannot be closed minded.  After all, the truth will never be threatened by open mindedness.

 

Translation of the transliterated words:

wamin`hum: and amongst them

yastamiʿūna: listen

Note: the root is S-M-Ain and and it means hearing or hearing and understanding or knowing and retaining at the same time. It also can mean hearing and approving or concurring at times.  YASTAMiDDNA is an action that is happening or will be happening.  It means: the action of listening is happening by the subject (third person plural)

Ilayka: to you (singular pointing to Muhammad)

afa-anta: is it you?

tus`miʿu: make hear/ make listen

Note: the root is S-M-Ain and and it means hearing or hearing and understanding or knowing and retaining at the same time. It also can mean hearing and approving or concurring at times. TUSMiUU is an action that is happening or will be happening.  It means: the action of making the object (ALSSUMMA= the deaf) listen or hear is happening or will be happening by the subject.

l-ṣuma: the deaf/ the ones with a block

Note: the root is Sad-M-M and it means blockage of some entity. The concrete word SAMMAM means a certain kind of block that either blocks all thing or selectively allows certain things in and keeps others out. Conceptually, the term is used often for deafness or further for blocking anything from reaching their minds. ALSSUMMA means deaf or blocked in hearing.

Walaw: even if

Kānū: they were

Note: the root is K-W-N and it means being.  KANOO is an action that is completed that is derived from the root. It means: the action of being happened by the subject (third personal plural).  This in turn means: they were/ they happened to be.

 

lā yaʿqilūna:  not processing/ not thinking/ not contemplating

Note: the root is Ain-Qaf-L and it means tying the animal so that it does not go away. This is the concrete word, but it is also used for any restraint or putting things together as in tying the knot. The word is used for brain or thinking appropriately. That could be because either that one who thinks appropriately is restraining his thoughts from going astray, or that he is tying things together or both. YaAAQILOONA is an action that is being completed or will be completed and that is derived from the root. It means: the action of thinking/ contemplating appropriately or with restraint, is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person plural).  Because the action was preceded with the negation (LA) then it means not processing/ thinking/ contemplating.
