Inna Allaha istafa adama wanoohan waala ibraheema waala AAimrana AAala alAAalameena
The Aya says:
Verily, Allah chose, Adam and Noah and people of Abraham and people of Imran over all creation.
My personal note:
The word Istafa takes the meaning of the subject making purified or chosen the object for the subject. So, the Aya means that those people were chosen and purified by God for Himself. This means that they were chosen to serve God and propagate his message as well as other aspects of why God would choose some of his creation specifically for His service.
The words AALI were translated as people of. They can be the family of the person and that is correct, but on a wider scale, it involves all the people of the person and that includes the people that used the person as the leader or followed his path and direction.

My personal note:
The Aya points to the fact that obeying Allah and His messenger is part of the system and the direction that is to be taken by the people of God. It reminds us that people who take their own direction away from God’s path are people who are not loved by Allah.
Again, the theme is that of God’s love and ways to reach God’s love. We have to always work on loving God and on making God love us. The Aya mentions one of the ways of earning God’s love and that is following his direction and path willingly.

When they earn God’s love, He will provide them with protective cover against errors or sins. This protective cover protects from committing the error or from the effect of the error through forgiveness. It ends with the reminder of God’s mercy and protection/forgiveness to people.

Yawma tajidu kullu nafsin ma AAamilat min khayrin muhdaran wama AAamilat min sooin tawaddu law anna baynaha wabaynahu amadan baAAeedan wayuhaththirukumu Allahu nafsahu waAllahu raoofun bialAAibadi
The Aya says:
(The) day when each self will find that what she did of good deed being presented, and what she did of ugly deed. She wishes that (there is) between her and him (the ugly deed) a far extent. And Allah makes you aware of his danger. And Allah is compassionate to the slaves.
My personal note:
The Aya reminds us that we will find all what we do of good and bad on the Day of judgement. It reminds us that we will wish that our bad deeds are as far as they can be from us. The Aya again makes us aware of the danger of forgetting God and his orders, as it also assures us of God’s kindness and compassion towards us.
This is again a reminder not to take God for granted and to always work on the love of God combined with awareness of the danger of ignoring him and the awareness of his compassion and kindness and love towards us.

The ones who made themselves safe (in God) will not take the rejecters (as) guardians short of the ones who make themselves safe (in God). And whoever does that is not of Allah in any entity, except that you make yourselves conscious of them, consciousness. And Allah makes you aware of his own Self’s danger. And to Allah is the ending.
My personal note:
This Aya is important and enters in the polemics between Muslims and non Muslims. It centers on the use of the word Awliya which is often translated as friends. Awliya gives the meaning of people who are a combination or directors and guarantors. That is why I used the word guardians for the meaning. So Awliya can be understood as friends, but within that context which gives authority to direct a person in one or another direction and guarantee as well.
So, when God is asking the Mumins= believers or the ones who are safe in God not to take the rejecters as Awliya. He is, in essence, asking us to be independent from their direction, guarantee and guardianship. The Aya asks us to grant the guardianship only to those who are also safe in God. The Aya continues that it is ok to be conscious of the rejecters. Therefore consciousness (in whatever angle of meaning of this word) is fine, but guardianship and direction is not.
Another issue is the statement “And Allah makes you aware of His own Self’s danger”. This statement is a clear reminder to anyone never to take God for granted. It would be unwise to see this statement and say God is scary and dangerous while ignoring the Ayat that mention God’s love and Mercy. However, it is also unwise to see the Ayat that mention the Love and Mercy of God and forget this one as well. The big message is being aware of all. One ends up with the balance of the Love for God, the trust in His endless mercy, and the awareness of His danger if ignored or rejected.

ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَالُواْ لَن تَمَسَّنَا النَّارُ إِلاَّ أَيَّامًا مَّعْدُودَاتٍ وَغَرَّهُمْ فِي دِينِهِم مَّا كَانُواْ يَفْتَرُونَ
Thalika biannahum qaloo lan tamassana alnnaru illa ayyaman maAAdoodatin wagharrahum fee deenihim ma kanoo yaftaroona
The Aya says:
That is because they happened to say: “Hell will not touch us except for a few days”. And what they made up of untruths misled them in their religion/ obligation to God.
My personal note:
This Aya touches on the issue of people making up arguments without foundation. Those arguments mislead people. It also mentions the issue of tearing oneself apart from the message. This happens when one makes something up and considers it his or her religion, when it is not.

Alam tara ila allatheena ootoo naseeban mina alkitabi yudAAawna ila kitabi Allahi liyahkuma baynahum thumma yatawalla fareequn minhum wahum muAAridoona
The Aya says:
Have you (Muhammad) not seen to those who received a portion of the book?! They are called to Allah’s book in order to judge between them. Then a group of them follows their own direction while avoiding/ blocking (God’s book).
My personal note:
This Aya mentions that all people of the book, which includes Muslims as well as Christians and Jews, need to judge by God’s book.

The Aya says:
Those whose actions backfired in this life and the next, and there is not any helpers to them, at a time of need.
My personal note:
This continues the previous Aya and it’s message. It continues that the actions of rejecting the message of God and killing his messengers and the righteous people will backfire on the perpetrators. It continues that they will not have anyone to help them at the time of need, which is the time when they stand in front of God.
