وَٱتَّبَعْتُ مِلَّةَ ءَابَآءِىٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسْحَـٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ ۚ مَا كَانَ لَنَآ أَن نُّشْرِكَ بِٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍۢ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ مِن فَضْلِ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَشْكُرُونَ ٣٨

WattabaAAtu millata aba’ee ibraheema waishaqa wayaAAqooba ma kana lana an nushrika billahi min shay’in thalika min fadli Allahi AAalayna waAAala annasi walakinna akthara annasi la yashkuroon

 

The Aya says:

And I followed religion of my ancestors, Abraham and Isaaq and Jacob.  It is not for us to worship any entity with Allah.  This is from the generosity of Allah upon us and upon the people.  However, most of the people are not grateful.

 

My personal note:

Joseph here continues discussing his belief system before explaining their dreams.  He related his belief system to his father, grandfather and great grandfather.  He also emphasized that monotheism is a blessing to his family and humanity and the need for all people to act in gratefulness to Allah’s blessings on us.

 

Translation of the transliterated words:

 

WattabaAAtu: and I joined and followed

Note: WA here for continuing of the subject.  ITTABaAATU is derived from the root T-B-Ain and it means following footsteps or join and follow footsteps. ITTABaAATU is an action that is completed. It means: the action of making oneself follow footsteps or join and follow footsteps of the object (millata=religion of) happened by the subject (first person).

 

Millata: religion of/ way of

Note: the root is M-L-L and it means to repeat something many times that you become bored with it. MILLA is a word that is derived from this root. It means the way and used in religious terms as the way of the religion. MILLATA is way of or religion of, since the religion is the way.

 aba’ee: my fathers / my ancestors

Note: ABA is derived from the root Hamza-B and it means father or parent. ABA means fathers of.  EE means mine

Ibraheema: Abraham

Waishaqa: And Isaq

wayaAAqooba: and Jacob

ma: not

kanaHappened to be/ was

 

Note: It is derived from the root K-W-N and it means being.  KANA is an action that is completed that is derived from the root. It means: the action of being happened by the subject (third personal singular or plural). 

Lana: for us

Note: the combination of the term ma kana lana takes the meaning: Not for us/ not be for us/ not appropriate for us.

An: that/ to

Nushrika: give partners/ worship partners

Note: the root is SH-R-K and it means partner or partnership and with this partnership is a measure of equality or being on par.  NUSHRIKA is an action that is happening or will be happening.  It means the action of associating partners (in worship) is happening or will be happening by the subject (first person plural)

 

Billahi: with Allah

Note: BI signifies an attachment or close linkage between what is before and what is after it.  In a Verbal sentence it can mean attachment to the action or to the subject as it does the action.  This attachment can then signify many things according to the verb and to the sentence and so on.   In here it gives the action before it an object.  Allah is Allah.

Min: of/ from

shay’in: a thing

Note: the root is SH-Y-Hamza and it means entity for noun and to entity for the action. This means making a non entity become an entity, which also means making what was impossible possible, or what was non existent, existent or what was un-allowed allowed, and so forth.  SHAY’IN means a thing or an entity.

 

Thalika: that

Min: of/ from

Fadli: blessing of/ favor of/ generosity of

Note: FADLI is derived from the root F-Dhad-L and it means overflowing of good or being able to fulfill all your needs from an entity and then still have more of it spared. It can also mean abundance due to the same reason. FADLI in this context means generosity of/ favor of/ blessing of.

Allahi: Allah

AAalayna: upon us

waAAala: and upon

annasi: the people/ the society/ the humanity

Note: ANNASSI is derived from the root Hamza-N-S and it means socializing. ANNAS means the people or humans or the society.

 

Walakinna: but/ however

Note: AKTHARA is derived from the root K-TH-R and it means many or numerous in all the planes of thought. AKTHARA means: the bigger number of and that means the majority of or most of.

 

Annaasi: the people/ the society

Note: ANNASSI is derived from the root Hamza-N-S and it means socializing. ANNAS means the people or humans or the society.

La: not

Yashkuroon: thank/ grateful

Note: the root is SH-K-R and it means thanking. The thanking can be in words and certainly in deeds.  YASHKUROON is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of thanking or being grateful is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person plural)
