This is 2:135
وَقَالُواْ كُونُواْ هُودًا أَوْ نَصَارَى تَهْتَدُواْ قُلْ بَلْ مِلَّةَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ حَنِيفًا وَ
ما
كَانَ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ
Waqaloo koonoo hoodan aw nasara tahtadoo qul bal millata ibraheema haneefan wama kana mina almushrikeen

The Aya says:
And they said: be Jewish or Christian you will be gifted with guidance. Say: but way of Abraham, who exposed his inner self, and he was not of the makers of partnership (to GOD).

My personal note:
The word HANIF is very important and very difficult to translate. It comes from the person that has the foot tilted so that the sole is not the one that touches the ground and is exposed. It could be that the HANIF is the one that exposed a place of oneself that is usually not exposed. Therefore, my understanding of the word is exposure and transparency. This exposure means that his message is clear and that his inside is clear to GOD and to fellow man and that he did not keep any secrets.

Translation of the transliterated words:
Waqaloo: And they said/they arrived at saying
Note: the root is Qaf-W-L and it means saying. QALOO is the third person singular past tense of a verb that is derived from this root and that means they arrived at saying literally. This means they said.
Koonoo: Be
Note: the root is K-W-N and it means being. KOONOO is an order form of a verb that is derived from this root. This form of the verb means Arrive at being. This means Be
Hoodan: Jewish
aw nasara: Or Christian
Note: AW means or. NASARA means Christians. This is derived from the root N-Sad-R which means aid or help at a time of need. This is also the root from which the city Nazareth was derived. Therefore the Christians, according to the Qur’an relate to the city of Nazareth or to the fact that they were the ones that supported Jesus may peace be upon him.
Tahtadoo: you arrive at gift of guidance/you will be gifted with guidance.
Note: the root is H-D-Y and it means gift. This, in an abstract form can mean guidance since guidance is a gift. TAHTADOO is the second person plural present or future tense of a verb that is derived from the root. This verb means you arrive at gift of guidance.
Qul: Say
Note: the root is Qaf-W-L and it means saying. QUL is an order addressing a singular person that means Arrive at saying which means Say.
Bal: But
Millata: Way of/road of
Note: the root is M-L-L and it means repetition of something to the boredom level. Therefore it suggests that the thing was done many times. MILLATA is a noun for what was used a lot and that is used for the road or way because the road or way are used a lot.
Ibraheema: Abraham
Haneefan: one who exposes his inside/inner self (to GOD and people)
Note: this is a word that is hard to translate. The root is Ha-N-F and it means the foot that is tilting inwards so that the sole is exposed. The Hanif is the one that exposes his sole or the inner part of the foot. This inner part is also considered the secret and exposing it means that the person has exposed his inside. This mean exposed his inner self.
Wama: And not
Kana: arrived at being/was
Note: the root is K-W-N and it means being. KANA is the third person singular past tense of a verb that is derived of the root. This verb means arrived at being or was.
Mina: Of/from
Almushrikeen: the makers of partnership (To GOD)
Note: the root is SH-R-K and it means partnership in many ways. The Qur’an uses this word to talk about people who make partners to GOD. ALMUSHRIKEEN are the ones that make partnership to GOD, as in worship and so forth.
