9:7

9:7
كَيْفَ يَكُونُ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ عَهْدٌ عِندَ اللّهِ وَعِندَ رَسُولِهِ إِلاَّ الَّذِينَ عَاهَدتُّمْ عِندَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ فَمَا اسْتَقَامُواْ لَكُمْ فَاسْتَقِيمُواْ لَهُمْ إِنَّ اللّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُتَّقِينَ

Kayfa yakoonu lilmushrikeena AAahdun AAinda Allahi waAAinda rasoolihi illa allatheena AAahadtum AAinda almasjidi alharami fama istaqamoo lakum faistaqeemoo lahum inna Allaha yuhibbu almuttaqeena
The Aya says:
How can there be an oath for those polytheists at Allah’s and at His messenger’s?! except for those that you (plural) have made an oath with at the mosque that is forbidden to violate. So as long as they aim to keep upright for you (plural) then you aim to keep upright for them. Indeed, Allah loves the mindful.
My personal note:
I translated ALMUSHRIKEEN to (those polytheists) instead of the usual translations of “the polytheists”. The reason is to avoid confusion or misunderstanding of the aim of the AL that comes before many words and that is often translated automatically as “the”.

That letter can be subject of misunderstanding. The reason is that the AL signifies that the speaker and the listener know who that particular group is. So it is not equal to “the” in a sense although it fits often. In this sentence for example, the context of the sentence talks about a particular group of polytheists that have proven to be not trustworthy and not about every single polytheist at every time and place on earth. Because of this I used “those” to point to them rather than “the”.

Translation of the transliterated words:

Kayfa: how?!
yakoonu: be/ becomes
Note: YAKOONU is derived from the root K-W-N and it means being. YAKOONU is an action that is being completed or will be completed that is derived from the root. It means: it will be or it becomes. KAYFA yakoonu means: how can there be?!
Lilmushrikeena: to the polytheists/ for the polytheists/ those polytheists
Note: li means to or for. ALMUSHRIKEENA is derived from the root SH-R-K and it means partner or partnership and with this partnership is a measure of equality or being on par. ALMUSHRIKEENA are the ones who make partners to God in worship or in action and that includes the polytheists.

AAahdun: oath/ treaty
Note: the root is Ain-H-D and it means a promise or a demand to promise or both. It also includes the fulfillment and meeting the promise. AAaHDUN means deal or promise or treaty.
AAinda: At
Allahi: Allah’s
waAAinda: and al
rasoolihi: his messenger/ His envoy
Note: RASOOLIHI is derived from the root R-S-L and it means to envoy someone or a group of people or animals. The concrete word is RASL and it means a group of people or animals that were sent by their owners or senders. RUSULUN means messengers of and is the plural of RASOOL who is the one that is sent and is used to mean the messenger because he was sent by the sender to the receiver. RASOOLI means messenger of or the envoy of. HI means him and it points to Allah.
Illa: except/ unless
Allatheena: those who
AAahadtum: you (plural) made oath with/ you (plural) exchanged promises/ had a treaty with
Note: the root is Ain-H-D and it means a promise or a demand to promise or both. It also includes the fulfillment and meeting the promise. AAaHADTUM is an action that is completed. It means: the action of making an oath in an interactive manner happened by the subject (second person plural)
AAinda: at
Almasjidi: the place of worship/ place of sujood/ mosque
Note: the root is S-J-D and in concrete it means in one concrete form: a tree that is tilting downward due to a heavy load of fruits. It therefore is used conceptually to mean tilting downward of the face or the body including prostration as well as showing any sign of submission to a higher power. The range of meaning all those meanings together and one needs to understand it as both unless there is a strong reason in the sentence or elsewhere in the Qur’an to make one meaning inappropriate or impossible. MASJID is the place and can also apply in addition to time of Sujood and that is prostration. The term is used for any place of worship and more particularly a mosque.

Alharami: the forbidden to violate
Note: the root is Ha-R-M and it means “forbidding and forbidden to violate”. ALHARAM means the forbidden to violate.
Fama: so as long as / so what
Istaqamoo: they kept upright./ sought to keep upright.
Note: the root is Qaf-W-M and it means standing upright or standing. The upright can be in all planes of position and for a horizontal dimension it means straight. ISTAQAMOO is an action that is completed. It means: the action of keeping upright and seeking to keep upright happened by the subject (third person plural)
Lakum: to you (plural)
Faistaqeemoo: then you (plural) keep upright/ you aim to keep upright
Note: FA means then or therefore or so. ISTAQEEMOO is derived from the root Qaf-W-M and it means standing upright or standing. The upright can be in all planes of position and for a horizontal dimension it means straight. ISTAQEEMOO is an order addressed to a group. It means: you keep or aim to keep upright
Lahum: to them/ for them
Inna: indeed
Allaha: Allah
yuhibbu: loves
Note: the root is Ha-B-B and it means in concrete seed. This word also means love. As if the seed is the product of love or the love will end up in a seed. YUHIBBU is an action that is derived from the root and that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of loving is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person singular pointing to God). This, in effect means, HE loves
almuttaqeena: the ones who make themselves conscious/ guard/ the mindful.
Note: the root W-Qaf-Y and it means guard and protect. Since the best way to guard is through consciousness, then I am using consciousness as a meaning here. ALMUTTAQEENA are the ones who make themselves conscious or the ones who make themselves guard.

9:6
وَإِنْ أَحَدٌ مِّنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ اسْتَجَارَكَ فَأَجِرْهُ حَتَّى يَسْمَعَ كَلاَمَ اللّهِ ثُمَّ أَبْلِغْهُ مَأْمَنَهُ ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لاَّ يَعْلَمُونَ
Wain ahadun mina almushrikeena istajaraka faajirhu hatta yasmaAAa kalama Allahi thumma ablighhu mamanahu thalika biannahum qawmun la yaAAlamoona
The Aya says:
And if someone of the polytheists asked for your (singular) protection then protect him until he listens to Allah’s statements then help him reach his safety/ safe place. That is because they are people who do not know.
My personal note:
The Aya continues to give nuance to the subject at hand and that is while the previous Ayat are about the determination for the demise of the old system, the Prophet and his followers are supposed to keep conducting themselves in the best possible standard of manner and behavior including offering safety to whoever is asking for it.

The Aya also talks about letting those who are given safety hear the message of Allah and then letting them reach their safety after they heard the message and without coercion to convert to Islam.

Translation of the transliterated words:

Wain: and if

Note: the root is W-Ha-D and it means one. AHADUN means a one or anyone

Mina: of/ amongst
Almushrikeena: the ones who make partners (To Allah)/ the polytheists
Note: the root SH-R-K and it means partner or partnership and with this partnership is a measure of equality or being on par. ALMUSHRIKEENA are the ones who make partners to God in worship or in action and that includes the polytheists.
Istajaraka: sought your protection/ sought your support
Note: the root is J-W-R and it means in concrete neighbor or an entity that is close to where one is. This is word is then used conceptually for support, neighborhood and at times for injustice because one lands not where he should be, Usually the word is positive in meaning if it is a JAR but negative if it is JOOR. ISTAJARAKA is an action that is completed. It means: the seeking of support and protection of the object (ka= singular you) happened by the subject (third person singular). Because it comes after the conditional it still carries the present tense as well as the past tense.
Faajirhu: then give him protection
Note: FA means then or therefore or so. AJIRHU is derived from the root J-W-R and it means in concrete neighbor or an entity that is close to where one is. This is word is then used conceptually for support, neighborhood and at times for injustice because one lands not where he should be, Usually the word is positive in meaning if it is a JAR but negative if it is JOOR. AJIRHU is an order or request addressed to an individual. It means protect him/ provide him shelter

It means: The action hearing and understanding is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person singular)
Kalama: statements of/ words of
Note: the root is K-L-M and it means wound or opening of the skin and that is the concrete word. It is also used to mean words or statements because those are the products of the opening of the mouth, which is an opening of the skin. Here it is used for word or statement. KALAMA means words or statements of.
Allahi: Allah
Thumma: then
Ablighhu: then help him reach/ make him reach
Note: the root is B-L-GHain and it means in concrete a child that became adult and therefore reached maturity. conceptually, it is used for language that is mature and clear as well as for anything that reached it’s intended design. ABLIGHHU is an order or a request addressed to an individual. It means: help him reach or make him reach.
Mamanahu: his place of safety
Note: MAMANAHU is derived from the root Hamza-M-N and it means safety. Conceptually, it can also be extended to trust as well, because we feel safe in the entity we trust. MAMANAHU means: his place or time of safety or both
Thalika: that
Biannahum: by them
qawmun: a people
Note: QAWMUN is derived from the root Qaf-Y-M and it means standing or standing upright. QAWMUN are the people that stand together and that makes the group or people or nation, basically, any group of people that stand together or form a group.
la yaAAlamoona: they do not know/ they do not know facts
Note: la is for negation of the action that comes after. YaAALAMOONA is derived from the root Ain-L-M and it means knowing/knowledge or knowledge of facts. YaAALAMOONA is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of knowing is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person plural).

فَإِذَا انسَلَخَ الأَشْهُرُ الْحُرُمُ فَاقْتُلُواْ الْمُشْرِكِينَ حَيْثُ وَجَدتُّمُوهُمْ وَخُذُوهُمْ وَاحْصُرُوهُمْ وَاقْعُدُواْ لَهُمْ كُلَّ مَرْصَدٍ فَإِن تَابُواْ وَأَقَامُواْ الصَّلاَةَ وَآتَوُاْ الزَّكَاةَ فَخَلُّواْ سَبِيلَهُمْ إِنَّ اللّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
Faitha insalakha alashhuru alhurumu faoqtuloo almushrikeena haythu wajadtumoohum wakhuthoohum waohsuroohum waoqAAudoo lahum kulla marsadin fain taboo waaqamoo alssalata waatawoo alzzakata fakhalloo sabeelahum inna Allaha ghafoorun raheemun

The Aya says:

So when the months that are forbidden to violate pass, then fight the polytheists wherever you find them and take them and confine them and sit in watch for them at every watching place. So, if they repent and establish the prayer and give the obligatory charity then clear their path. Indeed Allah is forgiving merciful.
My personal note:

It is important to remember that this is a passage about a particular incident at a particular time and therefore it cannot be taken out of that context of the polytheists breaking the treaty and killing the allies of the Muslim and therefore receive this threat and ruling. It is also important to point out just as the previous Aya mentioned that it does not apply to those polytheists who kept their treaty intact without breaching it.

Despite that it provides them with an out and that is repentance and also the Aya ends with the term that Allah is forgiving and merciful. Historically speaking, this is basically what happened and that they surrendered Mecca without much fighting or spilling of blood.
Translation of the transliterated words:
Faitha: So when/ so if and when
Insalakha: passed/ became gone
Note: INSALAKHA is derived from the root S-L-KH and it means skinning of the animal or removing of the ground to get the groundwater or something to that concept of removal of something that is very connected. INSALAKHA is an action that is completed. It means: the action of becoming removed from something important happened to the object (third person singular or plural) by an undeclared subject (who could be the person himself)
Alashhuru: the months
note: the root is SH-H-R and it means the appearing moon. The concrete means known or apparent because it appears as clearly as the moon. It is also used to mean month, because the month corresponds with the appearing moon, it starts with the moon when it appears and the new month comes with the reappearance of the new moon.. ALASHHURIN means the months.
Alhurumu: the forbidden to violate/ the inviolable
Note: the root is Ha-R-M and it means “forbidding and forbidden to violate”. HARRAMA is an action that is completed. ALHURUM means the forbidden to violate or harm and so on.
Faoqtuloo: then kill/ fight
Note: FA means then or therefore or so. OQTULOO is derived from the root Qaf-T-L and it means killing or actions that potentially can lead to death including injury and others. OQTULOO is an order addressed to a group. It means literally kill but in this context, it carries the meaning of fight.
Almushrikeena: the ones who make partners (To Allah)/ the polytheists
Note: the root SH-R-K and it means partner or partnership and with this partnership is a measure of equality or being on par. ALMUSHRIKEENA are the ones who make partners to God in worship or in action and that includes the polytheists.
Haythu: wherever
Wajadtumoohum: you (plural) found them/ you encounter them
Note: the root is W-J-D and it means in one concrete meaning the water that has accumulated in the desert. This is then used to mean a find that is really important. WAJADTUMU is an action that is derived from the root. It means: the action of finding the object (hum- them) or encounter the object happened by the subject (second person plural).
Wakhuthoohum: and take them/ capture them
Note: WA is a letter that links what is before with what is after. Fain: so if
Taboo: they repented/ they returned
Note: the root is T-W-B and it means repentance or the ultimate return to GOD. The concrete word that is related is TABOOT and it means coffin which is what takes us to our ultimate return to GOD or repentance. TABOO is an action that is completed. It means: the action of repentance or ultimate return (to God) happened by the subject (third person plural). Because it comes after the conditional it can carry the meaning of if they repent.
Waaqamoo: and they established/ and they kept upright/ and they maintained/ including they maintained
Note: WA is a letter that links what is before with what is after. This link is through inclusion, either one is included in the other or they are all included in the bigger sentence or bigger picture. WA often corresponds with “and/ addition” but the more encompassing meaning. AQAMOO is derived from the root Qaf-W-M and it means standing upright or standing. The upright can be in all planes of position and for a horizontal dimension it means straight. AQAMOO is an action that is completed. It means: the action of establishing or keeping upright or maintaining happened by the subject (third person plural)

Alssalata: the ritual prayer
Note: the root is Sad-L-Y and it means two main things in concrete. One is the lower back area and this one is used for one who is racing towards a goal and the head is close to the lower back of the one who is ahead. It is also used in concrete to mean heat and warmth and fire. The word is used for prayer as well. In this context, ALSSALATA is the ritual prayer.
Waatawoo: and they brought about
Note: WA is a letter that links what is before with what is after. This link is through inclusion, either one is included in the other or they are all included in the bigger sentence or bigger picture. WA is often translated as an addition (and), but inclusion probably covers the meaning a little better. In this area the WAW is used to begin a new sentence. ATAWOO is derived from the root Hamza-T-Y and it means coming with determination. The concrete word is for the water that flows in a place where it did not rain, therefore suggesting that the water came from somewhere else. ATAWOO is an action that is completed. It means: the action of bringing about the object (ALZZAKATA = the fruition/ the sharing) happened by the subject (third person plural)

Alzzakata: the fruition/ the nurture
Note: the root is Z-K-W and it means maturing/growing. In the concrete it means bringing about fruit. ALZZAKATA is what makes things bear fruit and nurture. In general the term takes the role of obligatory charity and it can be extrended to any form of sharing that helps the community thrive and prosper and be nurtured.
Fakhalloo: then let go/ then empty/ then stop restricting/ clear
Note: the root is KH-L-L and it means vinegar in one of it’s most concrete meanings. It also carries the meaning of close friendship and close intermingling between entities. The relationship could be because vinegar was a product of close mingling of the grape Juice with other material. KHALLOO is an order addressed to a group. It means: let go in a sense that not to be too intermingled with them to restrict their movement.
sabeelahum: their path
Note: the root is S-B-L and it means and it means flowing water from the falling rain from the sky to the flowing water in the river and so forth. This is the concrete and the other uses are related as in path, which allows the flow, to soft flowing hair and so forth. SABEELA is the flowing water or the path of. It takes the meaning of path or even the trip on the path. HUM means them
Inna: indeed
Allaha: Allah
Ghafoorun: forgiving/ provider of protective cover/ protectively covering
Note: the root is GH-F-R and it means covering for protection. The concrete word is the helmet of the fighter. GHAFOORUN is the one that covers to protect. This, in turn means protection from committing the sin and protection from the consequences of sin, which also means forgiving
Raheemun: Merciful
Note: the root is R-Ha-M and it means womb in concrete. This term is used to mean mercy and all the good that the womb provides. RAHEEM is the one with the womb-like mercy.

إِلاَّ الَّذِينَ عَاهَدتُّم مِّنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَنقُصُوكُمْ شَيْئًا وَلَمْ يُظَاهِرُواْ عَلَيْكُمْ أَحَدًا فَأَتِمُّواْ إِلَيْهِمْ عَهْدَهُمْ إِلَى مُدَّتِهِمْ إِنَّ اللّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُتَّقِينَ
Illa allatheena AAahadtum mina almushrikeena thumma lam yanqusookum shayan walam yuthahiroo AAalaykum ahadan faatimmoo ilayhim AAahdahum ila muddatihim inna Allaha yuhibbu almuttaqeena
The Aya says:
Except for those amongst the polytheists with whom you made an oath and they did not short change you a thing and they did not collaborate with anyone against you, then you perfect your treaty with them till it’s conclusion. Indeed Allah loves the (God) mindful.
My personal note:
This Aya clarifies that the break comes from the other side originally in the form of short changing or collaborating with another group against the muslims.

This Aya in a sense, teaches Muslims that as long as the other group in the treaty is keeping to it’s obligations then the Muslims are ordered by Allah to keep their obligation to the other group.

Note: the root is SH-Y-Hamza and it means entity. SHAYAN means entity. It is taken here to mean a thing or entity
Walam: and not
Yuthahiroo: they help / they ally
Note: the root is THa-H-R and it means Back (as opposed to stomach) in the concrete word. Conceptually form it can the meaning of To back/to support and also to externalize as opposed to internalize and to be on top since the back of the animal is the top of the animal and so on. YUTHAHIROO is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of interactively allying or helping is happening by the subject (third person plural).
AAalaykum: upon you (plural)/ against you
Ahadan: anyone/ a one
Note: the root is W-Ha-D and it means one. AHADAN means a one or anyone
Faatimmoo: then complete/ perfect/ do it to the best of your abilities
Note: FA means therefore or so or then. ATIMMOO is derived from the root T-M-M and it means to become complete or perfect or reach the best potential. In concrete it is used for the moon when it is most full, or the night when it is at it’s longest and so on. Conceptually, it is taken to mean complete or perfect or reaching the best potential. ATIMMOO is an order addressed to a group. It means: complete or perfect or do it to it’s best completion
Ilayhim: to them/ towards them
AAahdahum: their promise/ their deal/ their treaty
Note: the root is Ain-H-D and it means a promise or a demand to promise or both. It also includes the fulfillment and meeting the promise. AAaHDA means deal or promise or treaty of. HUM means them
Ila: towards/ till
Muddatihim: fulfillment of their time
Note: the root is M-D-D and it means extension or expansion in time and space and any other. Some concrete uses of the word are the high tide, when the sea expands, and also when the person lies down and expands himself or herself. MUDDATIHIM means their time or the fulfillment of the time.

وَأَذَانٌ مِّنَ اللّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ إِلَى النَّاسِ يَوْمَ الْحَجِّ الأَكْبَرِ أَنَّ اللّهَ بَرِيءٌ مِّنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ وَرَسُولُهُ فَإِن تُبْتُمْ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ وَإِن تَوَلَّيْتُمْ فَاعْلَمُواْ أَنَّكُمْ غَيْرُ مُعْجِزِي اللّهِ وَبَشِّرِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ
Waathanun mina Allahi warasoolihi ila alnnasi yawma alhajji alakbari anna Allaha bareeon mina almushrikeena warasooluhu fain tubtum fahuwa khayrun lakum wain tawallaytum faiAAlamoo annakum ghayru muAAjizee Allahi wabashshiri allatheena kafaroo biAAathabin aleemin
The Aya says:
And announcement from Allah and His messenger to the people on the big day of the pilgrimage that Allah and His messenger have broken with the polytheists. So, if you (plural) repent then it is better for you and if you move away then be well informed that you are never overcoming Allah. And give (o Muhammad) glad tidings to the rejecters of painful suffering.
My personal note:
As stated earlier, the breakup of the treaty was to be announced on the big day of pilgrimage so that all are informed. The aya continues to point out the futility of someone wanting to have a fight with Allah because we will never overcome Him. It also points out that our only refuge from Allah’s anger is His mercy and therefore repentance is better for us but if we decide otherwise then we suffer the consequences.
