مَّا كَانَ اللّهُ لِيَذَرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلَى مَآ أَنتُمْ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّىَ يَمِيزَ الْخَبِيثَ مِنَ الطَّيِّبِ وَمَا كَانَ اللّهُ لِيُطْلِعَكُمْ عَلَى الْغَيْبِ وَلَكِنَّ اللّهَ يَجْتَبِي مِن رُّسُلِهِ مَن يَشَاء فَآمِنُواْ بِاللّهِ وَرُسُلِهِ وَإِن تُؤْمِنُواْ وَتَتَّقُواْ فَلَكُمْ أَجْرٌ عَظِيمٌ
Ma kana Allahu liyathara almumineena AAala ma antum AAalayhi hatta yameeza alkhabeetha mina alttayyibi wama kana Allahu liyutliAAakum AAala alghaybi walakinna Allaha yajtabee min rusulihi man yashao faaminoo biAllahi warusulihi wain tuminoo watattaqoo falakum ajrun AAatheemun

The Aya says:
And Allah would not leave the ones who make themselves safe on what you (plural) are upon until He distinguishes the doer of no good from the good doer. And Allah would not make you (plural) perceive the unperceived. But Allah collects/ chooses of His envoys whoever He wills. Therefore make yourselves safe in Allah and His envoys and if you make yourselves safe including act consciously, then to you (plural) belongs great compensation for action.

My personal note:
The term ma kana Allahu literally means: Allah not happened to be or Allah was not but that is not the actual usage of the term in Arabic. However, that structure would actually be used to mean: Allah would not, and that is how I translated it.

Translation of the transliterated words:
Ma: not

Note: the root is K-W-N and it means being. KANA is an action that is completed that is derived from the root. It means: the action of being happened by the subject (third personal singular). This in turn means: he were or he happened to be

Note: the root is GH-Y-B and it means unperceived in general. One concrete word is the word for thick forest where many things are hidden and unperceived as opposed to the open desert that the Arabs were familiar with. This is then conceptually taken to any thing that disappears or becomes as if it disappeared in the forest. ALGHAYBI here means the unperceived.

It means: the action of making the object (min rusullihi= from his envoys) collected is being completed or will be completed by the subject (third person singular pointing to Allah) for the subject.

This means making a non entity become an entity, which also means making what was impossible possible, or what was non existent, existent or what was un-allowed allowed, and so forth. It means: The entity is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person singular and points to God).
faaminoo: therefore make yourselves safe
Note: FA means then or therefore or so. AMINOO is derived from the root Hamza-M-N and it means safety. AMINOO is an order addressing a group of people. It means: make yourselves safe or trust.

وَلاَ يَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ أَنَّمَا نُمْلِي لَهُمْ خَيْرٌ لِّأَنفُسِهِمْ إِنَّمَا نُمْلِي لَهُمْ لِيَزْدَادُواْ إِثْمًا وَلَهْمُ عَذَابٌ مُّهِينٌ
Wala yahsabanna allatheena kafaroo annama numlee lahum khayrun lianfusihim innama numlee lahum liyazdadoo ithman walahum AAathabun muheenun

The Aya says:
And those who rejected should not count that what we make expanded for them (of time and space and others) is good for their own selves. We but expand for them in order that they are increased in sin. And to them belongs humiliating suffering.

My personal note:
This Aya gives an important lesson and that is when one has something expanded for them as in living a long productive life or owning lots of land or being very rich or owning lots of good things in life. Those should not always be taken as blessings or signs that the person is on the right path. They can be tests that when a person uses them for a wrong reason, they will turn into being curses.

So, here the example is given of people who reject the message. They are expanded in lots of things, but the example that is given in this Aya tells us that they will end up misusing it and then they will increase their rejection which sends them to humiliating suffering that deems them weightless and worthless.

This should not mean that any person who is blessed with long life or lots of provisions is one who will suffer, but only those who have them and reject God and his message. Those who are blessed with worldly goods and use them in God’s path are blessed in this life and the next. So are those who are blessed with worldly goods while being unbelievers and then become believers.


Translation of the transliterated words:

Note: the root is Ha-S-B and it means calculation. This word then takes many other meanings according to the plane of thought that is talked about. It takes the form of thought and so forth. YAHSABANNA is an order with emphasis addressing a singular. LA YAHSABANNA together mean: And they should not measure/think/ calculate/ figure with emphasis.
Allatheena: those who
Kafaroo: rejected
Note: the root is K-F-R and it means burying the seed in the ground for planting. It is used to mean rejection of an idea because that means covering the brain in the ground from the idea or covering the idea so that it is not known or seen. KAFAROO is an action that is derived from the root and that is completed. It means the action of rejection happened by the subject (third person plural pointing to any group that fits the description. Here it points to allatheena= those who). It means they rejected.

Numlee: We expand time/ space

Note: the root is Hamza-TH-M and it means breaking of rule or rules. This means error or fault with a tinge of knowing it. ITHM is the breaking of the rule or the law or the error or the fault and it fits closely with sin when knowing that it is sin.
Walahum: and to them belongs
AAathabun: suffering
Note: the root is Ain-TH-B and it means an easy to swallow food or drink. AAaTHAB is what makes one not take an easy to swallow food or drink. That is suffering.
Muheenun: Humiliating/ makes them worthless/ weightless.
Note: the root is H-W-N and it means easy and supple and of low weight. Conceptually, it is used for any matter that does not weigh heavily on others. This can be positive as in making something easy. It can be negative as when a person or group of people become with no weight, as in becoming humiliated. MUHEEN means: makes them with no weight. Here it takes the meaning of humiliating or makes them worthless.

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ اشْتَرَوُاْ الْكُفْرَ بِالإِيمَانِ لَن يَضُرُّواْ اللّهَ شَيْئًا وَلهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
Inna allatheena ishtarawoo alkufra bialeemani lan yadurroo Allaha shayan walahum AAathabun aleemun

The Aya says:
Verily, those who took the rejection in place of the safety (in Allah) will never harm Allah. And to them belongs painful suffering.

My personal note:
There is a great subtle message in this Aya. It suggests that the default for humans is the safety in Allah. Those who reject God are ones who gave up their default safety in Allah to receive the rejection and that is a loosing form of trade.

It also suggests that deep inside all of us humans, we have the urge, conscious or unconscious, to respond to God’s message. When we reject it, it is because of an active process of rejecting or silencing that deep urge.

Alternatively, the Aya may be talking about people who accepted the message and then rejected it. Both meanings are possible and are compatible with each other.

وَلاَ يَحْزُنكَ الَّذِينَ يُسَارِعُونَ فِي الْكُفْرِ إِنَّهُمْ لَن يَضُرُّواْ اللّهَ شَيْئاً يُرِيدُ اللّهُ أَلاَّ يَجْعَلَ لَهُمْ حَظًّا فِي الآخِرَةِ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ
Wala yahzunka allatheena yusariAAoona fee alkufri innahum lan yadurroo Allaha shayan yureedu Allahu alla yajAAala lahum haththan fee alakhirati walahum AAathabun AAatheemun

The Aya says:
And the ones who hurry in the rejection should not sadden you (singular pointing to Muhammad pbuh). They indeed will never harm Allah a thing. Allah seeks not to make for them a grasped opportunity in the hereafter, and to them belongs great suffering.

My personal note:
This Aya reassures the prophet pbuh that no one will harm God through rejection.

It carries also the issue of God wanting them not to have an opportunity in the hereafter. This is the response to their rejection and not the intent of God from the beginning, therefore they bear the responsibility for this predicament that they put themselves in. It is also to be understood that this closure of opportunity is reversible whenever the person moves away from his/her rejection and into acceptance and safety in God.

The third issue here is that this is all in God’s knowledge and it is not up to humans to decide who of the other humans fall into this category, no matter how much animosity to Allah they showed. The great scholars of Islam always were in agreement never to condemn a particular person to Hell unless condemned by Allah in the Qur’an. The scholars condemn the actions that lead to Hell but they do not point to particular persons.

إِنَّمَا ذَلِكُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ يُخَوِّفُ أَوْلِيَاءهُ فَلاَ تَخَافُوهُمْ وَخَافُونِ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
Innama thalikumu alshshaytanu yukhawwifu awliyaahu fala takhafoohum wakhafooni in kuntum mumineena

The Aya says:
This is but Satan. He makes his protégés scare, therefore do not fear them, but fear me (Allah), if you happen to be ones who make themselves safe.


My personal note:
The term Satan makes his protégés scare has the double meaning of making them afraid and of making them scary to others. The Aya does give the order to the ones who make themselves safe not to fear any entity but Allah.

The fear of Allah is a theme that comes often in the Qur’an. It comes in the context of not fearing any other entity as in here. It also comes in other contexts. It is important to understand that the Qur’an talks about many issues related to relationships between creation and Allah, as in the fear of Allah, the reward of Allah, the mercy of Allah as well as the love of Allah. All those have to be taken together in order to arrive at the picture of the love for Allah that is purified from taking God for granted.

Translation of the transliterated words:

Thalikumu: that
Alshshaytanu: Satan
Note: the root is SH-Ta-N and it means the long rope at the well that one uses to get the bucket out of the water. The term is used to mean far and away (in all the planes of thought) as the long rope and it is also used for displacement or pulling away, as a parallel to the rope the pulls the bucked out of the water. ALSHAITAN is the one who is far or away (from God’s mercy) and who works at pulling other away through his long “rope”. It is the word used from Satan.
Yukhawwifu: He makes fear
Note: the root is KH-W-F and it means fear or scare. YUKHAWWIFU is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of making fear scare is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person singular pointing to Satan) to the object (AWLIYAAHU= the ones he is guardian on). This Make scare or fear carries two potential meanings that are correct. It means that he makes them afraid and that he makes them scare others.
Awliyaahu: The ones on whom he is guardian/ the ones who chose him as guardian/ His protégés.
Note: the root is W-L-Y and it means direction or following direction with some guarantee. It comes close to guardianship. AWLIYAA are ones who have guardian as. HU means him. AWLIYAAHU takes the meaning the ones who chose him as guardian as the closest meansing

فَانقَلَبُواْ بِنِعْمَةٍ مِّنَ اللّهِ وَفَضْلٍ لَّمْ يَمْسَسْهُمْ سُوءٌ وَاتَّبَعُواْ رِضْوَانَ اللّهِ وَاللّهُ ذُو فَضْلٍ عَظِيمٍ
Fainqalaboo biniAAmatin mina Allahi wafadlin lam yamsashum sooon waittabaAAoo ridwana Allahi waAllahu thoo fadlin AAatheemin

The Aya says:

Therefore they were transformed by softness from Allah, and abundance of good. No harm touched them, and they joined and followed Allah’s loving acceptance. And Allah is (the) one of great abundance.

My personal note:

The Aya continues the theme. It reassures us that those who join and follow God’s path and do well, including acting according to consciousness of Allah, will be transformed in a great way. This is a transformation that brings people closer to God.

Translation of the transliterated words:
Fainqalaboo: therefore they were transformed
Note: FA means therefore or so or then. INQALABOO is derived from the root Qaf-L-B and it means turning 180 degrees or upside down. The word is used for heart, because it is the organ that changes it’s moods often. In this sentence, it is used to point to a transformation. INQALABOO is an action that is completed. It means: the action of transforming the object (third person plural) happened by an undeclared subject (it could be the object itself or others).
biniAAmatin: by softness/ with softness/

الَّذِينَ قَالَ لَهُمُ النَّاسُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ جَمَعُواْ لَكُمْ فَاخْشَوْهُمْ فَزَادَهُمْ إِيمَاناً
وَقَالُواْ حَسْبُنَا اللّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ

Allatheena qala lahumu alnnasu inna alnnasa qad jamaAAoo lakum faikhshawhum fazadahum eemanan waqaloo hasbuna Allahu waniAAma alwakeelu

The Aya says:
Those who were told by the people: the people have indeed gathered against you, therefore anticipate/ fear them, so he increased their safety (in Allah), and they responded: Allah is enough for us, and the best to be entrusted with guardianship and guarantee.

My personal note:
The term “He increased their safety” is the literal translation of the term. I kept it the same to keep open the meaning of He, since it is not limited by the text. He can point to Allah. It also can point to what they were told by the people and it can point to both. This is rather common in the Qur’an where more than one understanding is possible. As long as the potential understandings are correct and correspond with the context and as long as they are not contradictory to the rest of the message, then they are considered correct and binding.

This gives the Qur’an a much wider range of meanings than the size of the book itself suggests and this makes for it’s great literary and spiritual and practical values.

This Aya is an extension of the previous one. It defines the people who made themselves safe in Allah who were promised glad tidings. It defines them as the people who responded to the calling from Allah and His messenger after they were hit with the sore wound, including making beauty (of all it’s angles) happen and acting according to the consciousness of Allah.

The Aya says:
They seek/ receive glad tidings of softness from Allah, and abundance of good. And that Allah does not make (the) compensation for work of the ones who make themselves safe (in Him) lost.

My personal note:
The aya continues the theme of God’s softness and abundance of good on the ones who served Him and were faithful to Him. He reassures us that none of the work of the ones who made themselves safe in Him will be lost.

فَرِحِينَ بِمَا آتَاهُمُ اللّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِ وَيَسْتَبْشِرُونَ بِالَّذِينَ لَمْ يَلْحَقُواْ بِهِم مِّنْ خَلْفِهِمْ أَلاَّ خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلاَ هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ
Fariheena bima atahumu Allahu min fadlihi wayastabshiroona biallatheena lam yalhaqoo bihim min khalfihim alla khawfun AAalayhim wala hum yahzanoona

The Aya says:
Joyous by what Allah had given them of His bounty and seeking/receiving glad tidings of those who have not yet joined them, that no fear on them, nor will they be sad/ anxious/ worried.

My personal note:
This continues the description of the group who are killed while on Allah’s path. It describes their joy with the company of their Lord and His bounty and the fact that they seek and receive the glad tidings of those who will join them.

The term lam yalhaqoo bihim min khalfihim would be literally translated like this: Not joined them from after them. This is why I translated it as: have not yet joined them because this is the closest to what the original Arabic is saying.

وَلاَ تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ قُتِلُواْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ أَمْوَاتًا بَلْ أَحْيَاء عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ يُرْزَقُونَ
Wala tahsabanna allatheena qutiloo fee sabeeli Allahi amwatan bal ahyaon AAinda rabbihim yurzaqoona

The Aya says:
And do not think (O Muhammad) that those who were killed in the path of Allah dead, but living at presence of their Nurturing Lord, being provided.

My personal note:
This is another Aya of the Qur’an that declares again that those who were killed while on the path of Allah are not dead, but living and being provided for by their Lord. In the Aya 2:154, it touches on the issue of living of those people. It declares that we do not sense their lives. This reveals a definition of life that is wider than what our current and narrow knowledge perceives.

The word is used for the head of the household and for the teacher because both are leaders over us and they nurture us in many ways. RABBI means: nurturing lord of. HIM means they or them. The nurturing lord is GOD, for he is our lord and nurturer/sustainer at the same time.

Salaam all,

This is 3:168
الَّذِينَ قَالُواْ لإِخْوَانِهِمْ وَقَعَدُواْ لَوْ أَطَاعُونَا مَا قُتِلُوا قُلْ فَادْرَؤُوا عَنْ أَنفُسِكُمُ الْمَوْتَ إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ (
Allatheena qaloo liikhwanihim waqaAAadoo law ataAAoona ma qutiloo qul faidraoo AAan anfusikumu almawta in kuntum sadiqeena

The Aya says:

Those who said to their brothers while they stayed behind: If they obeyed us, they would not have been fatally injured. Respond (O Muhammad): Then push the death away from yourselves, if you were truthful.

My personal note:

The word Ikhwanihim is translated as their brothers. This is used conceptually and it encompasses their actual brothers, to their friends to their encounters and people who live with them and so forth.

Translation of the transliterated words:
Allatheena: those who
Qaloo: said/ communicated
Note: the root is Qaf-W-L and it means saying or communicating. QALOO is an action that is completed that is derived from the root. It means: the saying happened by the subject (third person plural). It means they (pointing to the Godly people) said.
Liikhwanihim: to their brothers/ to their close encounters
Note: Li means to. IKHWANIHIM is derived from the root Hamza-KH-W and it means brothering. This is used for brothers but is inclusive of sisters. Conceptually, it can be extended to any person with whom there is a shared element as in shared parent, thought, place of living and so forth. IKHWANI means brothers of. HIM means them.
waqaAAadoo: and sat/ while stayed behind
Note: WA is a letter that links what is before with what is after. This link is through inclusion, either one is included in the other or they are all included in the bigger sentence or bigger picture. WA is often translated as an addition (and), but inclusion probably covers the meaning a little better. QaAAaDOO is derived from the root Qaf-Ain-D and it means sitting. Conceptually, it carries the meaning of staying in place and not moving/act or not wanting to move or act. QaAAaDOO is an action that is completed. It means the action of sitting or not acting/moving happened by the subject (third person plural).

Note: the root is Qaf-T-L and it means killing or actions that potentially can lead to death including injury and others. QUTILOO is an action that is completed. It means: the action of killing or fatal action happened by an undeclared subject to the object (third person plural). This the end of the conditional statement and it means: if they obeyed us, then they would not have been killed.
Qul: say/ respond
Note: the root is Qaf-W-L and it means saying but can cover any form of communicating. QUL is an order form addressed to a singular masculine. It means: Say, and in this context, it takes the meaning of respond.
Faidraoo: then push/ then repel
Note: Fa means then or so or therefore. IDRAOO is derived from the root D-R-Hamza and it means push. Conceptually, it is used in many angles of the meaning push, including repelling which is the use in this case because it is followed by AAan. IDRAOO is an order to a group of people. It means: push.
AAan: from/ away from
Note: this word takes the meaning of from, but at times takes the meaning of away from and so on.
Anfusikumu: yourselves
Note: the root N-F-S and it means to breath. ANFUSI is a noun that is derived from this root and it means Selves of. KUMU means plural you.
Almawta: the death
Note: the root is M-W-T and it means death or the opposite of life or the lack of voluntary movement. ALMAWTA is the death.

Kuntum: you (plural) were/ you happened to be
Note: the root is K-W-N and it means being. KUTUM is an action that is completed that is derived from the root. It means: the action of being happened by the subject (second person plural). This in turn means: You (plural) were or you happened to be.
Sadiqeena: Truthful/ people of truth
Note: the root is Sad-D-Qaf and it means truth in word or deed as a concept. When it is in deed, it takes the shape of any act of truthfulness including charity. SADIQEENA means people of truth or truthful.
