Salaam all

9:66
لاَ تَعْتَذِرُواْ قَدْ كَفَرْتُم بَعْدَ إِيمَانِكُمْ إِن نَّعْفُ عَن طَآئِفَةٍ مِّنكُمْ نُعَذِّبْ طَآئِفَةً بِأَنَّهُمْ كَانُواْ مُجْرِمِينَ
La taAAtathiroo qad kafartum baAAda eemanikum in naAAfu AAan taifatin minkum nuAAaththib taifatan biannahum kanoo mujrimeena

The Aya says:
Do not make excuses for yourselves. You have indeed rejected after having attained faith. If we pardon a group of you we shall punish another group by them being guilty.
My personal note:
What is most significant and eye opener about this Aya to me is that the person who attains faith is not necessarily immune from losing faith and therefore he/ she will have to vigilant at protecting his/ her faith and growing it and nurturing it.
Translation of the transliterated words:
La: not
taAAtathiroo: apologize/ find excuse
Note: the root is Ain-TH-R and it means: excusing or bring a reasonable excuse for an action or inaction. TaAATATHIROO is an action that is happening or will be happening. It means: the action of making an excuse for oneself is happening or will be happening by the subject (second person plural). It is preceded by a negation.
Qad: indeed
Kafartum: you (plural) rejected
Note: the root is K-F-R and it means cover or bury in the ground, as in put the seed in the ground and cover it. This is then used conceptually for many purposes as in discarding and rejecting as well as burying. KAFARTUM is an action that is completed. It means: the action of rejection or discarding of the object (not declared, but understood from the context to point to God and/or the message) happened by the subject (second person plural).
baAAda: after
eemanikum: your faith/ your attaining of faith/ having attained faith
Note: the root is Hamza-M-N and it means safe or safety. EEMANAN means safety or trust as in safe in the belief system they are in and so on and it can point to safety and trust at the same time. EEMANI is the faith and safety and trust (in Allah) of. KUM means plural you

Note: the root is root Ain-F-W and it means erasing footprint through the effect of the wind. This is the concrete and in abstract it means erasing a fault from the record as in forgiving it or erasing something from one’s ownership as in giving it up to someone else or just dealing with something as if it does not exist anymore or did never exist. It also is used in concrete to mean abundance and plentifulness and what is easy to give of money or good manners. The relationship between the two meanings is if you have an abundance of something then you may not feel a particular loss just as the footprint is lost through the abundance of sand. In this context, it points to prosperity that made them not pay attention to the past. NaAAFU is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of pardoning is happening or will be happening by the subject (first person plural)

AAan: from/ about
Taifatin: a group
Note: the root is TTa-W-F and it means to go around something in circles so that you get the feeling that you surround it. This is the concrete meaning and the abstract can be related to it especially the meaning of knowing something very well and being keen about it. TAIFATIN is a circle in a conceptual manner. In the context of this Aya, it takes the meaning of a group.

nuAAaththib: We punish/ We make suffer
Note: NuAAaTHTHIBis derived from the root Ain-TH-B and it means an easy to swallow food or drink. AAaTHAB is what makes one not take an easy to swallow food or drink. NuAAaTHTHIB is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: The action of making the object (Taifatan= a group) suffer is happening or will be happening by the subject (first person plural)

Mujrimeena: guilty/ sever the good ties
Note: the root is J-R-M and in concrete it means: harvesting the dates from the tree or separating/severing the dates from the tree. Conceptually, this word then carries many other meaning including a transgression because the transgression/criminal act is a separation or severing of ties with what is appropriate. MUJRIMEEN are the ones who sever ties and those are the criminals and the guilty parties.

9:65
وَلَئِن سَأَلْتَهُمْ لَيَقُولُنَّ إِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَخُوضُ وَنَلْعَبُ قُلْ أَبِاللّهِ وَآيَاتِهِ وَرَسُولِهِ كُنتُمْ تَسْتَهْزِؤُونَ
Walain saaltahum layaqoolunna innama kunna nakhoodu wanalAAabu qul abiAllahi waayatihi warasoolihi kuntum tastahzioona

The Aya says:
And if you (O Muhammad) ask them, they will indeed respond: “We were not but wading and playing.” Respond: “Is it in Allah and His signs and messenger, you were mocking?”
My personal note:
The Aya says that this response of wading or playing is not acceptable when it comes to Allah and His messenger and His books. Those are out of the equation for being subject to playing and so on.
Translation of the transliterated words:
Walain: and if
Saaltahum: you (singular) asked them
Note: the root is S-Hamza-L and it means asking. It could be asking a question and it could be asking for help and so forth. SALTAHUM is an action that is completed in relation to the conditional. It means: the action of asking happened by the subject (second person singular) to the object (third person plural)

Layaqoolunna: they will indeed respond/ say
Note: LA is for the response to the conditional or some emphasis. YAQOOLUNNA is derived from the root Qaf-W-L and it means saying in any way possible. YAQOOLUNNA is an action that is being completed or will be completed that is derived from the root. It means the action of saying with emphasis is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person plural).
Innama: not anything but
Kunna: We were/ we happened to be
Note: the root is K-W-N and it means being. KUNNA is an action that is completed that is derived from the root. It means: the action of being happened by the subject (first person plural).

Nakhoodu: venture/ wade through/ interfere
Note: the root is KH-W-Dhad and it means walking in water where the water is covering part of the body. This can apply to crossing a relatively shallow river and so on. The term can then be conceptually used to walking in a place where the body is partially covered by water or vegetation or so on. It can also be used to point to being involved in a subject or matter with potential danger which is the use here or dabbling in it . It means: the action of mocking or ridiculing is happening or will be happening by the subject (second person plural). Because it came after the kuntum then it takes the past tense although is written in the present tense.

يَحْذَرُ الْمُنَافِقُونَ أَن تُنَزَّلَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُورَةٌ تُنَبِّئُهُمْ بِمَا فِي قُلُوبِهِم قُلِ اسْتَهْزِؤُواْ إِنَّ اللّهَ مُخْرِجٌ مَّا تَحْذَرُونَ
Yahtharu almunafiqoona an tunazzala AAalayhim sooratun tunabbiohum bima fee quloobihim quli istahzioo inna Allaha mukhrijun ma tahtharoona

The Aya says:
The hypocrites are cautious that a chapter be sent down upon them informing them of what is in their hearts. Say: “Mock, indeed, Allah is bringing out what you are guarding.”
My personal note:
The Aya talks about the munafiqoon which is a term applied in the Qur’an about people who claim belief on the outside but hide unbelief in the inside. Generally the word is translated as “hypocrites” but hypocrites within that definition rather than other definitions of hypocrisy. The Aya says that they are very worried and careful of being exposed by the Qur’an and this statement says that they will be indeed exposed.
Translation of the transliterated words:
Yahtharu: they are careful/ they are cautious
Note: the root is Ha-TH-R and it means consciousness of danger or potential danger and action accordingly. Conceptually, it covers caution and precaution and so on as well as fear of danger. YAHTHARU is an action that is happening or will be happening. It means: the action of being careful or cautious is happening by the subject (third person plural).
Almunafiqoona: the hypocrites/ the hidden agenda people
Note: the root is N-F-Qaf. To explain it I use another derivative NAFAQ which means Tunnel. The tunnel is connection underground from one place to another. Therefore the essence of the word Tunnel is to “let Good/Useful things go to others under cover”. ALMUNAFIQOON are people with something hiding different from the apparent. They are people who say they are muslim but in reality or deep in their hearts they are not. General the term hypocrites is given to them or people with hidden agenda.
An: that
Tunazzala: be brought down
Note: TUNAZZALA is derived from the root N-Z-L and it carries the meaning of arrival to stay and descent. One concrete meaning is the descent of the person from his or her horse or camel as they arrive at the place where they plan to stay. TUNAZZALA is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of making the object (Sooratun= a chapter) arrive or making it descend is happening or will be happening by an undeclared subject.
AAalayhim: upon them
Sooratun: a chapter/ and enclosure
Note: SURA is the feminine of SUR which means Wall that encloses something and the root is S-W-R. SURA is used for passages of the Qur’an and not only Chapters of the Qur’an. The relationship with WALL is the fact that the SURA is well enclosed and somewhat complete in itself.
Tunabbiohum: it informs them/ it brings news to them
Note: the root is N-B-Hamza and it means news. TUNABBIOHUM is an action that is happening or will be happening. It means: the action of informing or bringing news to the object (HUM= them) is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person singular pointing to SURA)
Bima: by what/ in what/ with what
Note: BI signifies an attachment or close linkage between what is before and what is after it. In a Verbal sentence it can mean attachment to the action or to the subject as it does the action. This attachment can then signify many things according to the verb and to the sentence and so on. In this sentence it signifies tools of why they were taken.

Fee: in/ on
quloobihim: their hearts/ hearts and minds/ and their insides
Note: The root is Qaf-L-B and it means turning 180 degrees or upside down. The word is used for heart, because it is the organ that changes it’s moods often. Therefore QALB is our thoughts and emotions or what is inside us. QULOOBI are hearts and minds of or thoughts and emotions of. HIM means them.
quli: say
Note: QUL is derived from the root Qaf-W-L and it means saying in any way possible. QUL is an order addressed to a singular. It means: Say.
Istahzioo: mock/ ridicule
Note: the root is H-Z-Hamza and it means mocking or ridiculing. ISTAHZIOO is an order or a request. It means: mock or ridicule. In this here the order is for challenging them as in saying “Go ahead!”.
Inna: indeed
Allaha: Allah
Mukhrijun: bringing out/ exposing
Note: MUKHRIJUN is derived from the root KH-R-J and it means coming out or exiting. That is the conceptual meaning and it assumes it’s more specific meaning or meanings according to the plane of thought of the sentence. MUKHRIJUN means bringing out or exposing.
Ma: what
Tahtharoona: makes you cautious/ careful
Note: the root is Ha-TH-R and it means consciousness of danger or potential danger and action accordingly. Conceptually, it covers caution and precaution and so on as well as fear of danger. TAHTHAROONA is an action that is happening or will be happening. It means: the action of being careful or cautious is happening by the subject (second person plural).

9:63

أَلَمْ يَعْلَمُواْ أَنَّهُ مَن يُحَادِدِ اللّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَأَنَّ لَهُ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَالِدًا فِيهَا ذَلِكَ الْخِزْيُ الْعَظِيمُ
Alam yaAAlamoo annahu man yuhadidi Allaha warasoolahu faanna lahu nara jahannama khalidan feeha thalika alkhizyu alAAatheemu

The Aya says:
Have they not know that whoever breaches with Allah and His messenger then to him belongs the fire of Hell, staying in it. That is the great humiliation.

My personal note:
The Aya is a reminder that we as humans should not breach in our relationship with Allah and nor should we play with His boundaries that He set for us. It is also good to remember that Allah’s straight path is wider than we think and not that narrow that we can easily fall off of it unless we really want to and are working hard to leave it.

Here, breaching the boundaries is a pointer to fighting and taking as enemy and so on.

Alkhizyu: the humiliation/ embarrassment
Note: the root is KH-Z-Y and it means being overpowered, emabarrassed or humiliated. ALKHIZYU means humiliating and embarrassing and putting in a situation that is bad
