Salaam all,

وَلَئِن قُتِلْتُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ أَوْ مُتُّمْ لَمَغْفِرَةٌ مِّنَ اللّهِ وَرَحْمَةٌ خَيْرٌ مِّمَّا يَجْمَعُونَ
Walain qutiltum fee sabeeli Allahi aw muttum lamaghfiratun mina Allahi warahmatun khayrun mimma yajmaAAoona

The Aya says:
And if you were killed in Allah’s path or died, then protective cover from Allah and Mercy (are) better than what they collect.

My personal note:
Here, the Aya mentions that the best path is the path of God even if one dies or gets killed while on it or while pursuing it. The path leads the person to God’s protective cover and mercy and there is nothing better than that.

Translation of the transliterated words:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ لاَ تَكُونُواْ كَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ وَقَالُواْ لإِخْوَانِهِمْ إِذَا ضَرَبُواْ فِي الأَرْضِ أَوْ كَانُواْ غُزًّى لَّوْ كَانُواْ عِندَنَا مَا مَاتُواْ وَمَا قُتِلُواْ لِيَجْعَلَ اللّهُ ذَلِكَ حَسْرَةً فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ وَاللّهُ يُحْيِـي وَيُمِيتُ وَاللّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ
Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo la takoonoo kaallatheena kafaroo waqaloo liikhwanihim itha daraboo fee alardi aw kanoo ghuzzan law kanoo AAindana ma matoo wama qutiloo liyajAAala Allahu thalika hasratan fee quloobihim waAllahu yuhyee wayumeetu waAllahu bima taAAmaloona baseerun

The Aya says:
O those who make themselves safe (in Allah) do not be like those who rejected and said to their brothers when they hit in the land or happened to be in active pursuit: “If they were at our presence, they would not have died or fatally injured.” (This is) in order that Allah make that a vulnerability/regret in their hearts. While Allah makes live and makes die, and Allah has deep insight in what you (plural) do.

My personal note:
The terms hit in the land and active pursuit are really a partial understanding. Hit in the land can mean travel as well as work and may be fighting as well. Active pursuit can also carry within the meaning fighting or actively pursuing an enemy. In the context of the previous Ayat, the fighting is a clear possibility.
Hasratan Fee Quloobihim is a term that I translated as vulnerability and regret. This is a term used in a concrete fashion when an outer cover is removed, therefore making the entity underneath exposed and vulnerable and unprotected as well as opening it to possibility of regret.

Translation of the transliterated words:
Ya ayyuha allatheena: O those who
Note: the three words used here are callings.
Amanoo: made themselves safe
Note: the root is Hamza-M-N and it means safe or safety. AMANOO is an action that is derived from the root and that is completed. إِنَّ الَّذِينَ تَوَلَّوْاْ مِنكُمْ يَوْمَ الْتَقَى الْجَمْعَانِ إِنَّمَا اسْتَزَلَّهُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ بِبَعْضِ مَا كَسَبُواْ وَلَقَدْ عَفَا اللّهُ عَنْهُمْ إِنَّ اللّهَ غَفُورٌ حَلِيمٌ
Inna allatheena tawallaw minkum yawma iltaqa aljamAAani innama istazallahumu alshshaytanu bibaAAdi ma kasaboo walaqad AAafa Allahu AAanhum inna Allaha ghafoorun haleemun

The Aya says:
Verily, those who turned away amongst you the day of the encounter of the two crowds were just made to slip by Satan through some of what they gained. And indeed Allah erased away from them (the slip). Verily, Allah (is), forgiving, kind.

My personal note:
Here, Allah mentions that the error of those who erred was a slip on their part that was induced by Satan through some of their gains. It is a call for caution regarding that we can slip through our gains. It is also a reminder that God is forgiving and kind.

Thumma anzala AAalaykum min baAAdi alghammi amanatan nuAAasan yaghsha taifatan minkum wataifatun qad ahammathum anfusuhum yathunnoona biAllahi ghayra alhaqqi thanna aljahiliyyati yaqooloona hal lana mina alamri min shayin qul inna alamra kullahu lillahi yukhfoona fee anfusihim ma la yubdoona laka yaqooloona law kana lana mina alamri shayon ma qutilna hahuna qul law kuntum fee buyootikum labaraza allatheena kutiba AAalayhimu alqatlu ila madajiAAihim waliyabtaliya Allahu ma fee sudoorikum waliyumahhisa ma fee quloobikum waAllahu AAaleemun bithati alssudoori

The Aya says:
Then He brought down on you (plural), after the worry, safety sleepiness. It covers a group amongst you, while another group, their own selves made them concerned. They suspect in Allah, other than the binding truth, suspicion of the ignorance. They say: Will we have of the implement of entity? Say: The implement indeed, all belongs to Allah. They hide in themselves what they do not reveal to you (singular). They say: if belonged to us of the implement of an entity, we would not have been fatally injured here. Say: If you were in your shelters, then the ones on whom the fatal injury was written would have gotten exposed up to their beds. And in order that Allah tests what is in your chests, and in order that He purifies what is in your hearts. And Allah knows well in the entity of the chests.

My personal note:
This Aya continues the theme from the previous Aya. It points to the continuation of the story where they disobeyed and therefore had to sense the worry of the battle. Now, God mentioned that some of them were given peace and sleepiness while others were testy. The Aya ends with telling them that the use of LAW= If does not change what already happened.

The Aya says:
As/when you (plural) move upwards, and not turning back for anyone, while the messenger is calling you in your rear/ remainder, so He rewarded you worry for worry. In order so that you will not be sad on what you missed that passed you and not what hit you. And Allah (is) well informed in what you do.

My personal note:
This Aya continues the theme from the Aya before it. It describes the situation that happened and that is the Muslims or the majority of them were moving uphill, while the messenger remained behind and was calling them but they were not turning back. The Aya mentions that God gave them worry in place for the worry that the messenger endured in that situation. The Aya ends up with stating that the worry that happened to them is in order for them not to be saddened by what happened, nor what hit them for that battle was not a complete disaster and the Muslim community of Medina survived and thrived after it. The Aya ends up informing the Muslims that God is well informed in what we do.

Walaqad sadaqakumu Allahu waAAdahu ith tahussoonahum biithnihi hatta itha fashiltum watanazaAAtum fee alamri waAAasaytum min baAAdi ma arakum ma tuhibboona minkum man yureedu alddunya waminkum man yureedu alakhirata thumma sarafakum AAanhum liyabtaliyakum walaqad AAafa AAankum waAllahu thoo fadlin AAala almumineena

The Aya says:
And indeed, Allah was truthful to you (plural) in his promise, when you sensed them by His knowledge and permission, until you were weakened including self disputed in the implement and disobeyed after that He showed you what you like. Amongst you who seek this life and amongst you who seek the hereafter. Then He moved you away from them to test you, and He indeed forgave you. And Allah is one of abundance of favor over the ones who make themselves safe (in Him).

My personal note:
Here, the Aya goes to specifics about that incident that is called the battle of Uhud. In it the Muslims won at the beginning and then they started to collect and dispute on the gains of the battle, only to have their enemy come from behind and cause great chaos.
The Aya reprimands and offers AAafu= erasure of sin for this who disobeyed and erred during that battle. It explains and reminds them that the gains are better for the hereafter and for the discipline and the listening to the authority at that time. The Aya ends up with God’s favor on those who make themselves safe in Him.

The Aya says:
We shall cast the panic in the hearts and minds of the ones who rejected, by what they made partners with Allah what He did not bring down with power of proof. And their place of housing (is) Hell and hardship (is) the transgressors' place of long stay.

My personal note:
The Aya mentions that those who made partners to Allah have no power of proof in their case and for that they receive the punishment from God.

Salaam all,

This is 3:150


بَلِ اللّهُ مَوْلاَكُمْ وَهُوَ خَيْرُ النَّاصِرِينَ

Bali Allahu mawlakum wahuwa khayru alnnasireena

The Aya says:
But Allah (is) your guardian and He (is the) best of the supporters.

My personal note:
This Aya continues the subject from the one before it. It seems to suggest that one main reason for the followers of the message to obey the rejecters is in case the rejecters gave them support attached with strings. This Aya then is a message for relative autonomy of the Muslim community. It also may mean that the Muslims should not receive support when there are strings attached that may affect their relationship with God.

The Aya reminds us that God is our guardian. He provides us our direction and guarantee and He is the best supporter that anyone can have.

Translation of the transliterated words:
Bali: But
Allahu: Allah
Mawlakum: your (plural) guardian
Note: the root is W-L-Y and it means direction or following direction with some guarantee. MAWLA is director and guarantor of or guardian of. KUM means you (plural).
Wahuwa: and He/ while He
Khayru: best of
Note: the root is KH-Y-R and it means choice. It is also understood as good or as better, because one would chose the good over the bad. KHAYRU means: better or best of.
Alnnasireena: the supporters/ the ones who give support
Note: the root N-Sad-R and it means aid or help or support at the time of need. ALNNASIREENA are the ones who give support and aid at a time of need.
