Salaam all,

This is 3:136
أُوْلَـئِكَ جَزَآؤُهُم مَّغْفِرَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ وَجَنَّاتٌ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا وَنِعْمَ أَجْرُ الْعَامِلِينَ

Olaika jazaohum maghfiratun min rabbihim wajannatun tajree min tahtiha alanharu khalideena feeha waniAAma ajru alAAamileena

The Aya says:
Those, their compensation (is) protective cover from their nurturing Lord including gardens, under which rivers flow, staying unchanged in her. And (the) best compensation for work of the doers.

My personal note:
This Aya completes the previous Aya in mentioning that those who have the features mentioned previously will receive the protective cover from their nurturing Lord. This protective cover includes the garden and the best compensation for their work. May God bless us with their features.

Translation of the transliterated words:
Olaika: those
Jazaohum: their compensation
Note: the root is J-Z-W and the meaning is to compensate and for the noun Compensation. JAZAO means compensation of. HUM means them.

وَالَّذِينَ إِذَا فَعَلُواْ فَاحِشَةً أَوْ ظَلَمُواْ أَنْفُسَهُمْ ذَكَرُواْ اللّهَ فَاسْتَغْفَرُواْ لِذُنُوبِهِمْ وَمَن يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلاَّ اللّهُ وَلَمْ يُصِرُّواْ عَلَى مَا فَعَلُواْ وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ
Waallatheena itha faAAaloo fahishatan aw thalamoo anfusahum thakaroo Allaha faistaghfaroo lithunoobihim waman yaghfiru alththunooba illa Allahu walam yusirroo AAala ma faAAaloo wahum yaAAlamoona

The Aya says:
And those who, when/if they commit an ugly act, or transgress against themselves, they remembered Allah, therefore they sought protective cover from their sins. And who forgives the sins, but Allah?! And they did not insist on what they did, while knowing (that it is wrong).

My personal note:
This Aya is beautiful. It accepts that people who follow God’s path may commit sin or ugly acts (sexual or otherwise) or words. It also suggests that those sins harm the person who commits them more than anything and that is why they are considered a transgression against the self.

It also talks about protective cover that is sought and that is to protect them from the effect of sin on them. That protective cover is through the forgiveness from God, but also protection from God against other effects of the sin. The Aya points out that He alone is the one who provides protective cover.

The Aya ends up with another condition available in those people. That is that they do not insist on error once they know that it is wrong.

Here, holding tightly carries the meaning of insisting.

الَّذِينَ يُنفِقُونَ فِي السَّرَّاء وَالضَّرَّاء وَالْكَاظِمِينَ الْغَيْظَ وَالْعَافِينَ عَنِ النَّاسِ وَاللّهُ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ (
Allatheena yunfiqoona fee alssarrai waalddarrai waalkathimeena alghaytha waalAAafeena AAani alnnasi waAllahu yuhibbu almuhsineena

The Aya says:
Those who spend in the good time and the not good time, including the ones who restrain the anger and the ones who forgive the people, and Allah loves the ones who make goodness.

My personal note:
Here again the spending is not necessarily only monetary. It includes within it, the restraint of anger as well as erasing the burden of guilt through forgiveness. The erasing of burdens may also include within it’s meaning any other form of erasing burdens on people.

The Aya ends with the statement that God loves the ones who make beauty of all it’s aspects, including goodness.

Translation of the transliterated words:
Allatheena: those who
Yunfiqoona: spend/ they spend/ they tunnel
Note: the root is N-F-Qaf and it means tunnel in the concrete sense. This is then used to mean anything that is tunneled from one place to another as in hiding your thoughts or presenting different than the ones that you hold. Another is tunneling you money to another destination as in giving some of your money to charity or so forth. Here, it is used for the tunneling of the money or the spending it for charity. WasariAAoo ila maghfiratin min rabbikum wajannatin AAarduha alssamawatu waalardu oAAiddat lilmuttaqeena

The Aya says:
And make yourselves hurry to protective cover from your nurturing Lord, including a garden, her width (is) the universe/ the heavens and the earth. She (the garden) was prepared for those who make themselves act with heightened consciousness.

My personal note:
I chose “including” in translating WA which is usually translated as “and”. WA indicates inclusion of one word in another or all in the sentence or the wider subject. It is also because JANNA= garden/ hidden entity is included within the wider range of the meaning of the word Maghfira= protective cover, or forgiveness. Also the Earth is included within the wider definition of ALSSAMAWATU if one understands ALSSAMAWATU as the universe outside of the earth.

Translation of the transliterated words:
WasariAAoo: and hurry/ and make yourselves hurry

وَأَطِيعُواْ اللّهَ وَالرَّسُولَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ
WaateeAAoo Allaha waalrrasoola laAAallakum turhamoona

The Aya says:
And obey Allah and the messenger, perhaps you will receive Mercy.

My personal note:
The word that is between Allah and the messenger is the letter WAW. Waw is usually translated as and. However, it signifies inclusion, either that the two statements are included in each other or that they are included in a bigger statement or field. Here, it carries the meaning that obeying the messenger is included within obeying Allah. So, a person obeys Allah by obeying Allah as mentioned in His book. The person also obeys Allah by obeying the messenger. The two overlap but are not the same. However, it also means that the messenger will never order people to do something contrary to what God orders.

The Aya says:
And make yourselves act according to heightened consciousness of Hell, which was prepared to the rejecters.

My personal note:
Here, it continues the theme of the previous Aya which asks us to act according to heightened consciousness of God. Here, it adds the need to be conscious of Hell. However, this consciousness came after the mention of the consciousness of God in the previous Aya. After all, our actions have to always be in accordance of our heightened consciousness of God, more than any other consciousness.

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ لاَ تَأْكُلُواْ الرِّبَا أَضْعَافًا مُّضَاعَفَةً وَاتَّقُواْ اللّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo la takuloo alrriba adAAafan mudaAAafatan waittaqoo Allaha laAAallakum tuflihoona

The Aya says:
O those who made themselves safe (in Allah) do not eat the usury (in) multiples repeatedly, and make your-selves act according to consciousness of Allah, perhaps you (plural) will cause success.

My personal note:
I used the word Usury for Riba and that is the more common use of it. ALRRIBA may have a wider range of meaning. It is derived from growth and increase and therefore can encompass within the understanding any excessive gain to exploit the need of others, whether through interest or other means.

The multiples here does not have to mean 1-2-4-8 but anything that is equal or above because it comes as done in escalation in this sentence.

Translation of the transliterated words:
Ya ayyuha allatheena: O those who
Note: the three words used here are callings.
Amanoo: made themselves safe
Note: the root is Hamza-M-N and it means safe or safety. AMANOO is an action that is derived from the root and that is completed. It means: the action of making the object (not mentioned and therefore the subject and the object can be the same entity here) become safe happened by the subject (third person plural). وَلِلّهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الأَرْضِ يَغْفِرُ لِمَن يَشَاء وَيُعَذِّبُ مَن يَشَاء وَاللّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
Walillahi ma fee alssamawati wama fee alardi yaghfiru liman yashao wayuAAaththibu man yashao waAllahu ghafoorun raheemun

The Aya says:
And to Allah belongs what (is) in the heavens and what (is) in the earth. He forgives to whomever He wills and He makes suffer whomever He wills. And Allah (is) Forgiving, Merciful.

My personal note:
I used the word Heavens for the word Samawat. However, that word means above. Therefore, anything that is above the earth is called Sama. This includes the atmosphere and then the whole universe and what is beyond it. This word may have narrower definitions in other verses, if the context narrows it to some specific entity or by excluding some of the above entities from the description.
The Aya tells us that God provides protective cover or forgives whomever He wills. The protective cover is through forgiveness of sins and it also could be in protection from falling into sin or from the consequences of sin. The Aya leaves the options again open to God to forgive or to make us suffer for our sins. However, it ends up reminding us that Allah is the Merciful and the provider of protective cover. This means that if and when He makes us suffer, then we have to remember that His justice, Mercy, forgiveness and Wisdom are always in the background of that action.

لَيْسَ لَكَ مِنَ الأَمْرِ شَيْءٌ أَوْ يَتُوبَ عَلَيْهِمْ أَوْ يُعَذَّبَهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ ظَالِمُونَ
Laysa laka mina alamri shayon aw yatooba AAalayhim aw yuAAaththibahum fainnahum thalimoona

The Aya says:
Not (belong) to you (Muhammad) of the implement an entity. Whether He brings repentance on them or He makes them suffer, then they (are) transgressors.

My personal note:
This Aya brings some important issues. The one important issue is that the authority of bringing repentance or suffering is with God alone. The second is that God keeps open the possibility of bringing repentance or accepting the repentance of those who transgress against themselves through sin and otherwise. He also keeps open the possibility of making people suffer for their transgressions. In either case, God is just, wise and merciful, all at the same time.

LiyaqtaAAa tarafan mina allatheena kafaroo aw yakbitahum fayanqaliboo khaibeena
The Aya says:
In order to cut off a party of the people who rejected, or humiliate them, so they become flipped over without achievement.

My personal note:
This Aya continues the theme of the previous one where God continues that He will support the people who have safety in Him by cutting off a party of the rejecters by making them disappear, or that He will humiliate them into failure.

Translation of the transliterated words:
LiyaqtaAAa: To cut off/ to make disappear/ go away
Note: LI means to or in order to. YAQTaAAa is derived from the root Qaf-TTa-Ain and it means cutting as a conceptual meaning which can be very concrete or differently. In this sentence, it is used more to mean make go away or disappear. YAQTaAAa is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of cutting is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person singular pointing to God) on the object (Tarafan= an edge, a party) that is coming up.

وَمَا جَعَلَهُ اللّهُ إِلاَّ بُشْرَى لَكُمْ وَلِتَطْمَئِنَّ قُلُوبُكُم بِهِ وَمَا النَّصْرُ إِلاَّ مِنْ عِندِ اللّهِ الْعَزِيزِ الْحَكِيمِ
Wama jaAAalahu Allahu illa bushra lakum walitatmainna quloobukum bihi wama alnnasru illa min AAindi Allahi alAAazeezi alhakeemi

The Aya says:
And Allah did not make him (the angel’s support) except glad tidings to you (plural), and to make your hearts and minds secure by him. And the support is but from at Allah’s, the dominantly strong, the wise.

My personal note:
The Aya continues that the news of the help from the angels in that battle is mainly glad tidings to the followers of the messenger, in order to calm their emotions and minds. It then reminds them that all help comes only from Allah.

The Aya ends up with two attributes of Allah the dominantly strong and the wise, to remind us to have safety in them. God puts the wise, just after the dominantly strong to make us feel that all this strength and dominance are in the Hand of the wise, who will use them only for the best causes and in the best way.

Bala in tasbiroo watattaqoo wayatookum min fawrihim hatha yumdidkum rabbukum bikhamsati alafin mina almalaikati musawwimeena

The Aya says:
But yes, if you self restrain and make your-selves guard and they will come to you from this very moment. Your nurturing Lord will extend you with five thousand of the angels, making perceived effect.

My personal note:
The Aya again emphasized the issue of self restraint/patience and guarding or consciousness as the most important qualities in times of distress and extreme tension. I find this important because self restraint is about patience, but also about not overreacting or overdoing things. Guarding is about consciousness and allowing what should be allowed, while preventing what should be prevented. Both are great lessons in how not to let your emotions overtake you at times when they are most high.

The Aya recalls the situation in the battle of Badr when the messenger reassured his followers that God will extend them with three thousand angels to help them in that situation. The message of this Aya is that God is always with those who are safe in Him and trust in Him. He never lets them be alone.

Salaam all,

This is 3:123
وَلَقَدْ نَصَرَكُمُ اللّهُ بِبَدْرٍ وَأَنتُمْ أَذِلَّةٌ فَاتَّقُواْ اللّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ
Walaqad nasarakumu Allahu bibadrin waantum athillatun faittaqoo Allaha laAAallakum tashkuroona

The Aya says:
And verily Allah supported you in Badr, while you (plural) were vulnerable to domination. Therefore, make yourselves conscious of Allah. Perhaps you will thank.

My personal note:
The Aya reminds the followers who became weak in that mentioned battle that they were weaker in Badr (the previous battle) and they were supported by Allah. This is then used as a reminder to thank God for His support.

Translation of the transliterated words:
Walaqad: and verily
Nasarakumu: He supported you (plural)/ He aided you (plural)
Note: the root N-Sad-R and it means aid or help or support at the time of need. NASARAKUMU is an action was completed. It means: the action of aid or support at time of need happened by the subject (third person singular pointing to Allah) to the object KUMU= plural you.
Allahu: Allah
Bibadrin: in Badr
Note: Badr is the name of the first battle between the messenger and his followers with the people of Mecca. This happened after the messenger established his rule over Medina.
Waantum: and you (plural)/ while you (plural)
Athillatun: weak/ vulnerable to domination
Note: the root is TH-L-L and it means pliant to pressure and being dominated. This takes the meaning of weakness and humiliation, but at times, it takes the meaning of humility and softness. ATHILLATUN means weak or being dominated or vulnerable to domination, which is closer to the context of the sentence.
Faittaqoo: therefore make yourselves conscious of/ make your-selves guarded of
Note: FA means then, therefore or so. ITTAQOO is derived from the root W-Qaf-Y and it means guarding and the best form of guarding is consciousness. ITTAQOO is an order form of a verb to a group of people and it means make your-selves guarded of or make your-selves conscious of the object (Allah coming up).

laAAallakum: Perhaps
tashkuroona: you (plural) thank/ you (plural) become thankful
Note: the root is SH-K-R and it means thanking. TASHKUROON is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means literally: The action of thanking is happening or will be happening by the subject (second person plural) of an undeclared object, but it points to God indirectly.

Salaam all,

This is 3:122
إِذْ هَمَّت طَّآئِفَتَانِ مِنكُمْ أَن تَفْشَلاَ وَاللّهُ وَلِيُّهُمَا وَعَلَى اللّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ
Ith hammat taifatani minkum an tafshala waAllahu waliyyuhuma waAAala Allahi falyatawakkali almuminoona

The Aya says:
As/when two groups amongst you commenced to become weak/ unable to withstand, while Allah (is) their guardian. And on Allah then should depend the ones who made themselves safe.

My personal note:
The Aya continues that two groups concerned themselves with inability to withstand the fight. It assured them that Allah is the guardian.

The Aya brings the issue of dependence on God. From the understanding of this Aya, “the dependance on God” means: Do all that you need to do and then leave the rest to God, especially in the matters that one cannot control nor anticipate. It does not mean nor should it ever mean: don’t do anything for God will take care of it.

Translation of the transliterated words:
Ith: As/ when
Hammat: She/they concerned and began working on it/ She/they concerned/ they commenced
Note: the root is H-M-M and it means concern as a concept. This is extended to sadness because it is great concern and in action, it encompasses the concern with or without commencement. HAMMAT is an action that is completed. It means: the action of concerning the subject (third person singular or plural feminine pointing to Taifatun= a group) happened.
Taifatani: Two groups
Note: the root is TTa-W-F and it means to go around something in circles so that you get the feeling that you surround it. This is the concrete meaning and the abstract can be related to it especially the meaning of knowing something very well and being keen about it. TAIFATANI means two circles in a conceptual manner. In the context of this Aya, it takes the meaning of two group.
Minkum: from you (plural)/ amongst you
An: that/ to
Tafshala: fail/ become unable to stand pressure
Note: the root is F-SH-L and it means weakness and lack of courage and fear. Conceptually, it carries the meaning of inability to stand to a challenge and failure. TAFSHALA is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of failing or becoming unable to stand pressure is happening or will be happening by the subject (dual form feminine pointing to Taifatan= two groups).
waAllahu: and Allah/ while Allah
waliyyuhuma: Their guardian/ guardian of the two groups
Note: the root is W-L-Y and it means direction or following direction with being assured of some kind of guarantee. WALIYY is the person that follows the direction and expects guarantee, or the one whose direction is followed and does the guarantee, in short the guardian. Here, is means guardian as indicated by the context of the sentence. WALIYYU means guardian of. HUMA= the two.
waAAala: and on
Allahi: Allah
Falyatawakkali: then should depend
Note: Fa means then or so or therefore. LI points to should. YATAWAKKALI is derived from the root W-K-L and it means dependence as a concept which could be used in different fashions as dependence for aid and so forth. YATAWAKKALI is an action that is being completed or will be competed. It means: the action where the subject (third person plural) is making itself depend or will be making itself depend on the object (Allah, mentioned earlier).
Almuminoona: the ones who make themselves safe (in Allah and the message)
Note: the root Hamza-M-N and it means safety. ALMUMINOONA means the ones who made themselves safe.

This is 3:121
وَإِذْ غَدَوْتَ مِنْ أَهْلِكَ تُبَوِّىءُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مَقَاعِدَ لِلْقِتَالِ وَاللّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ
Waith ghadawta min ahlika tubawwio almumineena maqaAAida lilqitali waAllahu sameeAAun AAaleemun

The Aya says:
And as/when you left in early morning from your family (in order) to land the ones who made themselves safe (in Allah) bases for the fight. And Allah (is) all listening, all knowing.

My personal note:
The previous Ayat were talking about some people who were hiding hatred against the messenger. Now, the Aya here proceeds to describe the preparation for a battle that the prophet was involved in against his enemies.

Translation of the transliterated words:
Waith: and when
Ghadawta: left in pre-sunrise
Note: the root is GH-D-W and it means the time just before sunrise. It is used to mean early morning and also next day or a future day according to the context of the sentence. It is also used to mean leaving or moving in early morning. GHADAWTA is an action that is completed. It means: the action of early morning/pre-sunrise happened by the subject (second person singular pointing to the prophet pbuh). This is then taken to mean: you moved in pre-sunrise or you left in pre-sunrise and so forth.
Min: from
Ahlika: your family/people
Note: the root is Hamza-H-L and one concrete meaning to the word is the fat that surrounds the back of the animal. It is used conceptually to mean family or any of the people that are closely associated with the entity being discussed. This could be because they are like the fat as in they engulf and protect and so forth and gain protection at the same time. AHLI means family of. KA means singular you.
Tubawwio: you make placed/ you make landed
Note: the root B-W-Hamza and it means landing in a conceptual manner and therefore will take different meanings according to the context. It is used for marriage often because the one who gets married lands in a house and so forth. TUBAWWIO is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of making the object (Almumineena= the ones who made themselves safe) land or be placed is being made to happen or will be made to happen by the subject (second person singular).
Almumineena: the ones who made themselves safe (in Allah and His message)
Note: the root Hamza-M-N and it means safety. ALMUMINEENA means the ones who made themselves safe.
maqaAAida: seats/ positions/ bases
Note: the root is Qaf-Ain-D and it means sitting or seat. It is then used conceptually to mean base because things sit on top of the base and so forth. MAQaAAiDA are places of seats or places of base. Here, it means bases or seats or positions.
Lilqitali: to the fighting/for the fighting
Note: LI means to. LQITAL is derived from the root Qaf-T-L and it means killing. QITAL is an interactive word that means killing opposite killing. Therefore the one in QITAL is the person that is in the process of responding to another that is trying to kill him. This, in essence is the fighting, or the response to aggression through fighting back.
waAllahu: and Allah
sameeAAun: All listening/ all hearing
Note: the root is s-m-ain and it means hear or listen. The word has in it the absorption of the words and the understanding of them as to generate the appropriate response. Sameeaaun is the one that listens a lot or the all listening.
AAaleemun: All knowing
Note: the root is Ain-L-M and it means knowledge or knowing. AAaLEEMUN means all knowing.
