يَعِدُهُمْ وَيُمَنِّيهِمْ وَمَا يَعِدُهُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ إِلاَّ غُرُورًا
YaAAiduhum wayumanneehim wama yaAAiduhumu alshshaytanu illa ghurooran

The Aya says:
He promises them, and he makes them wishfully hope. And Satan does not promise them except falsehood.


My personal note:
The Aya continues the same theme. It reiterates the technique of Satan of making false promises including making people wishfully think and hope for that falsehood to become true.

Translation of the transliterated words:
YaAAiduhum: He promises them
Note: the root is W-Ain-D and it means promise. YaAAiDU is an action that is being completed or will be completed that is derived from the root. It means: the action of promising is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person singular pointing to Satan) to the object HUM which means them.

وَلأُضِلَّنَّهُمْ وَلأُمَنِّيَنَّهُمْ وَلآمُرَنَّهُمْ فَلَيُبَتِّكُنَّ آذَانَ الأَنْعَامِ وَلآمُرَنَّهُمْ فَلَيُغَيِّرُنَّ خَلْقَ اللّهِ وَمَن يَتَّخِذِ الشَّيْطَانَ وَلِيًّا مِّن دُونِ اللّهِ فَقَدْ خَسِرَ خُسْرَانًا مُّبِينًا
Walaodillannahum walaomanniyannahum walaamurannahum falayubattikunna athana alanAAami walaamurannahum falayughayyirunna khalqa Allahi waman yattakhithi alshshaytana waliyyan min dooni Allahi faqad khasira khusranan mubeenan

The Aya says:
And I shall indeed lead them astray including I shall make them wishfully hope and I shall order them so they will indeed pull out the ears of the domestic animals. And I shall order them so they will alter Allah’s creation. And whoever takes Satan as guardian for himself, short of Allah then he indeed lost a clear loss.

My personal note;
The Aya continues the theme of the previous Aya. It indicates the techniques that Satan uses in leading us astray. They include making us have wishful thoughts and hopes that are false. They also include rituals that that involve altering the created beings of Allah.

The first ritual is the one where people pull the ears of the animals. Clearly it is then forbidden because of the cruelty involved, but also because it is a ritual that is not needed to bring the person closer to Allah.

The other theme mentioned is “Altering Allah’s creation”. This becomes a very big subject. The context of this Aya suggests that this is a prohibition if intended as a ritual of religious significance unless an exception is present. One exception is the case of male circumcision. One would say that the Aya is not banning male circumcision for the main reason that it was a practice before Islam and it continued in Islam before and after the revelation of this Aya. If this aya is to ban male circumcision then the prophet (pbuh) would have prohibited it and the Muslims would have stopped or at least an opinion banning circumcision may have arrived to us from the early Muslim community. There is no evidence of such opinion.

At another level, the term carries with it a general tendency to discourage altering Allah’s creation. This discouragement becomes weaker when our human need to alter God’s creation is stronger (corrective surgery) and the discouragement becomes stronger as the need for alteration becomes weaker. The weakest reason for altering God’s creation is then doing it as a supposed religious ritual.

Here, we need to understand that Allah’s creation is not only living things, but everything that is around us. So, at one level is that we should take care of the earth and the sky and have as minimal impact on them as we can. This is then an environmentalist message.

At another level is the issue that " altering God’s creation" can carry over to altering the spiritual nature of ourselves into something that embraces falsehood and covers truth, even though we were created otherwise.

It means: the action of making the object (HUM= them) loose the path or go astray is happening or will be happening, with determination, by the subject (first person singular).

This is like pulling hair and other pulls that uproots things. Conceptually, it is used to point to cutting any entity from it’s origin or source. LAYUBATTIKUNNA is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the pulling out or cutting of the object (ATHANA ALANaAAaMA-= ears of the domesticated animals) is happening or will be happening, with emphasis by the subject (third person plural).
Athana: ears of
Note: the root is Hamza-TH-N and it means ear in concrete. It also means hearing, knowing and approving at the same time and may be extended to acting according to that knowledge. ATHANA means ears of.
alanAAami: the domesticated animals/ the providing animals
Note: the root is N-Ain-M and it means soft in the concrete sense. In abstract, it means anything that can be understood as soft as in soft to touch and soft in treatment and soft life as in a life that does not have much hardship. ALaNAAaMI are the domesticated animals because they are “soft” or because they make our lives softer.

Walaamurannahum: and I will indeed order them to implement

Note: the root is B-Y-N and it means in concrete between. The action of the verb is betweening. This betweening can mean clarifying because one can know better the difference between two things. It also can mean distancing because the betweening makes things become apart. MUBEEN is the one that makes between in a conceptual sense. In this context, SULTANAN MEBEEN carries the meaning of clear or self evident and clarifying license to fight.

لَّعَنَهُ اللّهُ وَقَالَ لَأَتَّخِذَنَّ مِنْ عِبَادِكَ نَصِيبًا مَّفْرُوضًا
LaAAanahu Allahu waqala laattakhithanna min AAibadika naseeban mafroodan

The Aya says:
Allah expelled him (from his mercy) and he responded: “I will take to myself, from your slaves, a portion, made certain.”

My personal note:
The aya continues the issue of Satan that was mentioned previously. It gives background. That Allah expelled him from his mercy and then Satan mentioned that he will be taking to his side a certain portion of humanity.

There is certainty that some of humanity will follow the steps of Satan. However, all Humanity has the free will and the ability to not follow him but follow Allah’s path. It is only when we allow Satan to manipulate us and manipulate the truths around us that we make ourselves vulnerable to him. We seek refuge in Allah from him for there is no stronger protection than Allah’s. There is also no stronger push to the right path than having safety and trust in Allah. May Allah increase our safety in Him.

Note: LaAAaNAHU is derived from the root L-Ain-N and it means distancing or expelling. It is used to mean curse in the form of distancing or expelling from nearness or mercy. The concrete word is scarecrow because it keeps away or at a distance the undesirable birds from the field. LaAAaNAHU is an action that is completed. It means that the action of expelling from mercy or distancing of the object (hu= him) happened by the subject (third person singular pointing to Allah).
Allahu: Allah
Waqala: and he (satan) said/ responded

It means: the action of taking the object (min AAiBADIKA= from your slaves/servants) for oneself is being made to happen or will be made to happen by the subject (first person singular) and with emphasis.

Note: the root is Ain-B-D and it means slave or servant. AAIBADI means slaves or servants of. KA is a singular you and it points to Allah. Here, the term AAiBADAKA points to all humans.
Naseeban: a portion/ a part
Note: The root is N-Sad-B and it means something elevated that it can be seen. It then can take many other meanings as in pursuit of something elevated, uphill or difficult and tiring effort and a worshipped stature since it is usually elevated or pursued. NASEEB is used to mean a portion or part of something. When one places an entity on an elevated area, then it is ready to be picked by some and that may be the relation to portion to be picked and so on

Mafroodan: made certain/ make obligatory
Note: the root is F-R-Dhad and it means obligatory entity as in what is obligatory in acts of worship and so forth. MAFROODAN means made obligatory. In this context, it is pointing to a certainty of taking a portion of humanity to himself.

إِن يَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِهِ إِلاَّ إِنَاثًا وَإِن يَدْعُونَ إِلاَّ شَيْطَانًا مَّرِيدًا
In yadAAoona min doonihi illa inathan wain yadAAoona illa shaytanan mareedan

The aya says:
They call upon, short of Him (Allah), nothing but inactive entities and they call upon nothing but a manipulating satanic entity.

My personal note:
This Aya, though short, has very interesting issues. The first big issue is the one regarding the word INATHAN which is generally translated as females, but I translated it as inactive entities. One can use the term females because the Arabs worshipped mainly Goddesses, and therefore this applies as a general rule and is correct.

The term ONTHA in concrete form points to the female organ, while the term THAKAR points to the male organ. While sexually interacting the male organ assumes generally the more active role, while the female organ, the more passive and receptive role. It is true that there is activity on the part of the female organ, but less so in comparison. When those roles are taken conceptually, then the term INATH can be pointing to passive/inactive entities within the context of this sentence. It does not however point to the other potential conceptual meaning of INATH as a receptive entity, because the entities they worshipped were only passive/inactive and never receptive.

The Aya should not be understood as saying anything negative about women or females in general. It was pointing merely to a concept that applies to the idols that they worshipped.

The interesting thing is that the Aya then proceeds to mention a masculine entity in the same sentence in “manipulating satanic entity”. In a sense it maintains a balance. So, one potential message of this Aya is this: “You are calling upon entities that are inactive, but the active entity that you are actually calling while you do this, is a satanic entity that manipulates you or manipulates the truth.” Indeed, the power of Satan is in manipulation. The more we are stable in our being, the less likely we are to be manipulated by him.

One important thing to remember is that Allah is above gender and therefore male and female do not apply to Him. Therefore one should not understand this Aya as suggesting that God is male. The Aya does point to the fact that Allah is an active and not inactive entity. God is also receptive, a feature that is often covered within the conceptual meaning of the term ontha, but not intended in the context of this Aya.

Conceptually, it is used for any form of stretching of entities and is understood according to the context. In this context, it is used to point to an entity that manipulates the truth. MAREEDAN is one who stretches the truth beyond it’s limits, a manipulator.

إِنَّ اللّهَ لاَ يَغْفِرُ أَن يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَلِكَ لِمَن يَشَاء وَمَن يُشْرِكْ بِاللّهِ فَقَدْ ضَلَّ ضَلاَلاً بَعِيدًا
Inna Allaha la yaghfiru an yushraka bihi wayaghfiru ma doona thalika liman yashao waman yushrik biAllahi faqad dalla dalalan baAAeedan

The aya says:
Indeed, Allah does not protectively cover, that He be partnered with. And He protectively covers what is short of that to whomever He wills. And whoever makes partners to Allah then he indeed lost the path, far misguidance.

My personal note:
I used protective cover in this Aya because it carries the profound effect of the Aya. For indeed the one who worships others with Allah have lost Allah’s protective cover and that is the hugest loss.

This Aya carries the meaning of another aya 4:48. They establish an important principle of Islamic thought. The principle is that all sins are forgivable by Allah, or do not remove the person from Allah’s protective cover except the sin of making partners to Allah. In here one needs to understand some main other issues:

1- It does not mean that the other sins will be forgiven for sure, but there is a potential for forgiveness of those sins even if the person does not repent. The criteria for that forgiveness are between the person and Allah. Allah will always judge us with His mercy, justice, love and compassion. It also could mean that the person may still suffer, but less than he or she deserves for the sin. This is an important principle to understand because there are lots of Ayat and sayings of the prophet (pbuh) which carry grave consequences for certain sins, as in murder, usury, adultery and so on. Those grave consequences are understood in the light of this Aya and 4:48 as general rules of grave consequences but with room for exceptions.

2- Making partners with Allah is a sin that is not forgivable without exceptions. However, it will be forgiven with repentance. So, the difference between it and the previous one is that it is the one that requires repentance for it to be forgiven, while others do not.

3- Therefore repentance forgives all sin. Repentance is then defined as accepting the sin and then moving away from it with the intention to never come back. This is addressed in Aya 8:38

The imagery at the end is very important. All movement away from Allah’s path is considered a state of losing the path. The imagery is that polytheism is the deepest form of loosing the path. It is also the deepest form of injustice.

Note: Bi denotes that what comes after is a tool and/or an object or an association with an action that was mentioned. If it is an object of the action then it makes it stronger. HI means him and it points to Allah.

وَمَن يُشَاقِقِ الرَّسُولَ مِن بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُ الْهُدَى وَيَتَّبِعْ غَيْرَ سَبِيلِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ نُوَلِّهِ مَا تَوَلَّى وَنُصْلِهِ جَهَنَّمَ وَسَاءتْ مَصِيرًا
Waman yushaqiqi alrrasoola min baAAdi ma tabayyana lahu alhuda wayattabiAA ghayra sabeeli almumineena nuwallihi ma tawalla wanuslihi jahannama wasaat maseeran

The Aya says:
And whoever pulls apart from the messenger, after the guidance had become clear to him, and follows other than the path of the ones who make themselves safe (in Allah and the message), We will make him protégé of what he made himself follow and make him reach Hell. And she (Hell) is a hated ending.

My personal note:
Here, the Aya points to the importance of being honest with ourselves once we discover the right path. It becomes an obligation to follow it. It also declares that the right path is the path of Allah’s envoy to us Muhammad (pbuh) and those who followed him.

The other important thing is that if we decide to chose other than Allah’s path then we put ourselves under the guardianship of other than God. We become protégés of those entities and that is a sure path to Hell.

لاَّ خَيْرَ فِي كَثِيرٍ مِّن نَّجْوَاهُمْ إِلاَّ مَنْ أَمَرَ بِصَدَقَةٍ أَوْ مَعْرُوفٍ أَوْ إِصْلاَحٍ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ وَمَن يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ ابْتَغَاء مَرْضَاتِ اللّهِ فَسَوْفَ نُؤْتِيهِ أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا
La khayra fee katheerin min najwahum illa man amara bisadaqatin aw maAAroofin aw islahin bayna alnnasi waman yafAAal thalika ibtighaa mardati Allahi fasawfa nuteehi ajran AAatheeman

The Aya says:
No good in much of their secret dealings if not who orders by charity or recognized acts of goodness or reconciliation between the people. And whoever does that pursuing Allah’s loving acceptance, then We shall bring him a great reward.

My personal note:
In a sense the aya casts a shadow of skepticism on secret dealings between people unless they were in the direction of charity, reconciliation and recognized acts of goodness. This last one is really important in a sense. MAAaROOF is something that is agreed upon as being good. So, someone cannot say, if it is good in my view only, then it is legitimate. He or she will need the agreement of many others.

The other issue in this Aya is that it suggests that those actions do good for humanity in general and humans that do them will be rewarded by them in this life. However, in the case of those who do them seeking Allah’s loving acceptance, then the reward is always bigger and encompasses this life and the next.

The scholars of the past mentioned that for the action to be accepted by God it has to be khalisan Sawaban= pure and correct. The action is pure when it is done for God only and correct, when it is done as properly as could be.

It means: the action of ordering or ordering to implement or implementing the object (bisadaqatin= by charity) happened by the subject (third person singular or plural)

Note: Bi denotes that what comes after is a tool and/or an object or an association with an action that was mentioned. If it is an object of the action then it makes it stronger. SADAQATIN is derived from the root Sad-D-Qaf and it means truth in word or deed. When it is in deed, it takes the shape of charity as the act of truthfulness or that charity is considered giving what truly belongs to the ones who receive it. SADAQTIN means charity.

Islahin: reconciliation/ mending
Note: the root is Sad-L-Ha and it means becoming helpful or useful in a good direction. This means mainly: becoming one of benefit as in benefiting oneself and others. Included in this meaning is becoming fixed after having been broken. ISLAHIN means making fruitfulness and in this context, reconciliation/ fixing what was broken or fissured.

Ibtighaa: seeking/ pursuing

It does attain the meaning of something to aspire to or pursue, as well as something bad or immature. Both may share that youth aspires to mature, and youth is associated with immaturity and foolish actions. IBTIGHAA means the desiring/aspiring/ pursuing for one self or the seeking for oneself.

Mardati: loving acceptance/ approval

وَلَوْلاَ فَضْلُ اللّهِ عَلَيْكَ وَرَحْمَتُهُ لَهَمَّت طَّآئِفَةٌ مُّنْهُمْ أَن يُضِلُّوكَ وَمَا يُضِلُّونَ إِلاُّ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَمَا يَضُرُّونَكَ مِن شَيْءٍ وَأَنزَلَ اللّهُ عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ وَعَلَّمَكَ مَا لَمْ تَكُنْ تَعْلَمُ وَكَانَ فَضْلُ اللّهِ عَلَيْكَ عَظِيمًا
Walawla fadlu Allahi AAalayka warahmatuhu lahammat taifatun minhum an yudillooka wama yudilloona illa anfusahum wama yadurroonaka min shayin waanzala Allahu AAalayka alkitaba waalhikmata waAAallamaka ma lam takun taAAlamu wakana fadlu Allahi AAalayka AAatheeman

The Aya says:
And if not for Allah’s favor upon you (singular) and His mercy, then would have commenced a group of them to misguide you (singular). And they will not misguide but themselves and they will not harm you (singular) a thing. And Allah sent upon you (singular) the book and the wisdom and made you (singular) know what you did not happen to know. And the favor of Allah upon you (singular) happened to be great.

My personal note:
This aya tells us how the favor of Allah upon the prophet (PBUH) was so great. The book and wisdom is something that I may have mentioned before. In it’s big general terms it encompasses knowledge and application of that knowledge in the best possible way. It also could be looked at as the wisdom as something that is encompassed within the book since both are linked by the WAW and the WAW can mean that one thing is encompassed within another. This would still give the same meaning since two different people can read the same book but what they learn and apply from it are two different things or at least at different degrees of mastery.

This suggests that the prophet (pbuh) was not only given the book, but also the best way to utilize it in his every day life. Thus he would be a great example for all of us.

Another message is that people who are dishonest and who try to misguide others end up mainly harming their own selves.

Fadlu: bounty of/ favor of/ abundance of
Note: the root is F-Dhad-L and it means overflowing of good or being able to fulfill all your needs from an entity and then still have more of it spared. It can also mean abundance due to the same reason. FADLU means: overflowing of good of or provision of more goodness than is required to cover the needs so that there will remain more of it left.

AAalayka: upon you (singular pointing to Muhammad PBUH)
Warahmatuhu: and His mercy

One concrete word is the steer that steers the animals. The relationship is that the steer helps move the animal in the best direction that the steerer wants. وَمَن يَكْسِبْ خَطِيئَةً أَوْ إِثْمًا ثُمَّ يَرْمِ بِهِ بَرِيئًا فَقَدِ احْتَمَلَ بُهْتَانًا وَإِثْمًا مُّبِينًا
Waman yaksib khateeatan aw ithman thumma yarmi bihi bareean faqadi ihtamala buhtanan waithman mubeenan

The aya says:
And whoever acquires an error or a sin, then he accuses an innocent with it then indeed, he made himself bear an exposed falsehood and self evident sin.

My personal note:
This aya clearly is about prohibiting people from making errors or sins and then accusing others accused of those actions.

BUHTAN is a clear or exposed falsehood and that is a sign that it is such a big falsehood that it should not hide from any perceiving person, yet people still do it.

Note: the root is HA-M-L and it means in one concrete usage, being pregnant and in another, the new born sheep. Conceptually, it takes the meaning of carrying including taking responsibility for. IHTAMALA is an action that is completed. It means: the action of making oneself carrying or bearing responsibility of the object (Buhtanan) happened by the subject (third person singular).
Buhtanan: exposed or clear falsehood
Note: the root is B-H-T and it means exposing falsehood or exposed falsehood. BUHTANAN is a clear or exposed falsehood.
Waithman: and sin/ injustice
Note: WA is a letter that links what is before with what is after. This link is through inclusion, either one is included in the other or they are all included in the bigger sentence or bigger picture. It also can mean distancing because the betweening makes things become apart. MUBEEN is the one that makes between in a conceptual sense. In this context, SULTANAN MEBEEN carries the meaning of clear or self evident and clarifying license to fight.

4:111

Salaam all,

This is 4:111
وَمَن يَكْسِبْ إِثْمًا فَإِنَّمَا يَكْسِبُهُ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ وَكَانَ اللّهُ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا
Waman yaksib ithman fainnama yaksibuhu AAala nafsihi wakana Allahu AAaleeman hakeeman

The Aya says:
And whoever acquires a sin then he indeed acquires it upon himself. And Allah happened to be knowing, wise.

My personal note:
As if this Aya reiterates the message that the person who sins is someone who is transgressing against himself of herself.

The Aya ends up reassuring us all about God’s knowledge and wisdom. This is important because it means that not only does God have the knowledge, but He will use it in the best way and most just and merciful way.

Note: the root Ha-K-M and it means the steer that steers the animal. This word is used for ruling and judging as well as other meanings that contain steering as part of the concept. HAKEEM means wise or the steering. The steering means the entity that steers in the best way possible using the best tools of knowledge, compassion, justice and mercy, and that is wisdom.

Salaam all,

This is 4:110
وَمَن يَعْمَلْ سُوءًا أَوْ يَظْلِمْ نَفْسَهُ ثُمَّ يَسْتَغْفِرِ اللّهَ يَجِدِ اللّهَ غَفُورًا رَّحِيمًا
Waman yaAAmal sooan aw yathlim nafsahu thumma yastaghfiri Allaha yajidi Allaha ghafooran raheeman

The Aya says:
And whoever does ugly deed or acts unjustly to himself then seeks Allah’s forgiveness will find Allah, forgiving, merciful.

My personal note:
All sin or all the ugly deeds that we do is a form of transgression against ourselves. I also chose forgiveness this time for the root GH-F-R although protective cover will also apply because it includes forgiveness and more in it’s coverage. However, forgiveness seems to be the main aim in this context.

THUMMA points to things happening in a sequence of time, space or whatever. However, it applies to things happening immediately after or a long time after. So, as long as we live, the door to seeking Allah’s forgiveness and protective cover is open. One never looses hope in reaching safety in God.

Note: the root is W-J-D and it means in one concrete meaning the water that has accumulated in the desert. This is then used to mean a find that is really important. YAJID is an action that is derived from the root that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of finding the object (Allaha) is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person singular).
Allaha: Allah
Ghafooran: forgiving/ provider of protective cover
Note: the root is GH-F-R and it means covering for protection. The concrete word is the helmet of the fighter. GHAFOORAN is the one that covers to protect. This, in turn means protection from committing the sin and protection from the consequences of sin, which also means forgiving
Raheeman: Merciful
Note: the root is R-Ha-M and it means womb in concrete. This term is used to mean mercy and all the good that the womb provides. RAHEEM is the one with the womb-like mercy.
