Salaam all,

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوَاْ إِن تُطِيعُواْ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ يَرُدُّوكُمْ عَلَى أَعْقَابِكُمْ فَتَنقَلِبُواْ خَاسِرِينَ
Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo in tuteeAAoo allatheena kafaroo yaruddookum AAala aAAqabikum fatanqaliboo khasireena

The Aya says:
O those who made themselves safe (in Allah and His message), if you obey the ones who rejected, they will turn you back on your rears, so you flip back losers.

My personal note:
This is a great word of advice to the ones who made themselves safe in God and His message not to willingly comply by/obey the demands of those who rejected. The reason is that they may turn them back into losers. This order applies to orders that are inconsistent with the message of the Qur’an or that lead to inconsistency with the orders of the Qur’an.

Translation of the transliterated words:
Ya ayyuha allatheena: O those who
Note: the three words used here are callings.
Amanoo: made themselves safe
Note: the root is Hamza-M-N and it means safe or safety. AMANOO is an action that is derived from the root and that is completed. It means: the action of making the object (not mentioned and therefore the subject and the object can be the same entity here) become safe happened by the subject (third person plural). So, it ends up meaning: they made themselves safe.

Note: FA means then or therefore or so. TANQALIBOO is derived from the root Qaf-L-B and it means turning 180 degrees or upside down. The word is used for heart, because it is the organ that changes it’s moods often. TANQALIBOO is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of turning around or flipping over or upside down is happening or will be happening to the object (second person plural) by itself or others.
Khasireena: losers
Note: the root is KH-S-R and it means loss as a concept. KHASIREENA means losers.

فَآتَاهُمُ اللّهُ ثَوَابَ الدُّنْيَا وَحُسْنَ ثَوَابِ الآخِرَةِ وَاللّهُ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ
Faatahumu Allahu thawaba alddunya wahusna thawabi alakhirati waAllahu yuhibbu almuhsineena

The Aya says:
Therefore, Allah brought them (the) reward of this life and (the) goodness of reward of the hereafter. And Allah loves the ones who do goodness.

My personal note:
This Aya continues the same subject and it mentions that the calling upon God as mentioned in the previous Aya brought about God’s unending rewards in this life and the next. God asks us to always ask for his help and for His protective cover.

Faatahumu: So He brought them

وَمَا كَانَ قَوْلَهُمْ إِلاَّ أَن قَالُواْ ربَّنَا اغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَإِسْرَافَنَا فِي أَمْرِنَا وَثَبِّتْ أَقْدَامَنَا وانصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ
Wama kana qawlahum illa an qaloo rabbana ighfir lana thunoobana waisrafana fee amrina wathabbit aqdamana waonsurna AAala alqawmi alkafireena

The Aya says:
And their saying was not but (that) they said: Our nurturing Lord, provide protective cover to us (from) our sins and our inappropriate expenditure in our implement and make our feet steady and support us over the rejecting people.

My personal note:
The Aya brings the statement of the people who suffered in their fights with their prophets. It brings their example as saying: our Lord provide protective cover. The inappropriate expenditure includes any inappropriate action or bad use of resources or energy and money. Make our feet steady is conceptual and covers asking for stability and steadiness and perseverance.

وَكَأَيِّن مِّن نَّبِيٍّ قَاتَلَ مَعَهُ رِبِّيُّونَ كَثِيرٌ فَمَا وَهَنُواْ لِمَا أَصَابَهُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ وَمَا ضَعُفُواْ وَمَا اسْتَكَانُواْ وَاللّهُ يُحِبُّ الصَّابِرِينَ
Wakaayyin min nabiyyin qatala maAAahu ribbiyyoona katheerun fama wahanoo lima asabahum fee sabeeli Allahi wama daAAufoo wama istakanoo waAllahu yuhibbu alssabireena

The Aya says:
And as any of prophet, with whom physically fought many people of the lord, so they did not loose resolve because of what hit them in the path of Allah, and they did not become weak, nor did they loose vigor, while Allah loves the ones who self restraint/ the patient.

My personal note:
The Aya points to the followers of the messenger that there were many people who had to physically fight with their prophets and suffered, but their resolve, strength and vigor remained intact. This is defined as self restrain and patience, since self restrain stopped them from succumbing to all those pressures.

Note: NABIYYIN is derived from is derived from either one of two roots. The first is N-B-Hamza and it means news. The other is N-B-Y and it means elevated. The word NABIYY means a prophet, and it could be because the prophet brings news or that he is elevated over others or both. NABIYYIN means: prophet.
Qatala: physically fought
Note: the root Qaf-T-L and it means killing or actions leading to death as in causing serious injury. QATALA is an action that is completed. This form of action is interactive and has the meaning of killing opposite killing which in turn means fighting in a physical sense. QATALA means: the action of physical fighting happened by the subject (third person plural)..
maAAahu: with him
ribbiyyoona: people of the nurturing lord/God devoted people
Note: the root is R-B-B and it means lord or king as well as nurturing and sustaining. The word is used for the head of the household and for the teacher because both are leaders over us and they nurture us in many ways. RIBBIYYOONA are people who are devoted to the nurturing lord.
Katheerun: numerous
Note: the root is K-TH-R and it means many or numerous in all the planes of thought. KATHEERUN means: many or numerous.

Wahanoo: They became weak/ they lost their strength, resolve.

وَمَا كَانَ لِنَفْسٍ أَنْ تَمُوتَ إِلاَّ بِإِذْنِ الله كِتَابًا مُّؤَجَّلاً وَمَن يُرِدْ ثَوَابَ الدُّنْيَا نُؤْتِهِ مِنْهَا وَمَن يُرِدْ ثَوَابَ الآخِرَةِ نُؤْتِهِ مِنْهَا وَسَنَجْزِي الشَّاكِرِينَ
Wama kana linafsin an tamoota illa biithni Allahi kitaban muajjalan waman yurid thawaba alddunya nutihi minha waman yurid thawaba alakhirati nutihi minha wasanajzee alshshakireena
The Aya says:
And it did not happen to be for a self to die, except by knowledge and permission of Allah, a book made to a limit. And whoever seeks the rewards of this life, We will give him of her, and whoever seeks the rewards of the hereafter, we will give him of her, and We shall compensate the ones who are thankful.

My personal note:
KITABAN MUAJJALAN is a term that is difficult to translate. In a conceptual manner, it does mean a book with limits or endings on it. Those are limits of time and place. This can take the meaning that death is postponed for a person until the time of it comes and so forth.

The use of the WE to point to God is present in this Aya. We can hold many meanings:
1- A team with God at the top. Therefore it can point to work done by the servants of God whether angels or so forth.
2- Royal WE.
3- God as multiples. This third one is rejected because the Qur’an indicates clearly that God is one and indivisible.

So, this brings a rule in understanding the Qur’an. In understanding statements with multiple potential meanings, then the meaning that contradicts other clear and concise statements of the Qur’an is automatically rejected.

It also means hearing, knowing and approving at the same time and may be extended to acting according to that knowledge. ITHNI means knowledge and approval/permission of or license of.

Note: the root K-T-B and it means putting things together as in grouping the herd together or closing the lips or writing (the most common use), because in writing, one puts the letters and the ideas together. KITABAN means, the process of writing or the book or anything related to it from the ideas to the ink and paper to the place where all is put together.
Muajjalan: kept till the end
Note: the root is Hamza-J-L and it means end of an entity. This entity can be time or place or anything that is determined by the sentence. MUAJJALAN means kept till end (of time, place or otherwise)

وَمَا مُحَمَّدٌ إِلاَّ رَسُولٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلِهِ الرُّسُلُ أَفَإِن مَّاتَ أَوْ قُتِلَ انقَلَبْتُمْ عَلَى أَعْقَابِكُمْ وَمَن يَنقَلِبْ عَلَىَ عَقِبَيْهِ فَلَن يَضُرَّ اللّهَ شَيْئًا وَسَيَجْزِي اللّهُ الشَّاكِرِينَ
Wama muhammadun illa rasoolun qad khalat min qablihi alrrusulu afain mata aw qutila inqalabtum AAala aAAqabikum waman yanqalib AAala AAaqibayhi falan yadurra Allaha shayan wasayajzee Allahu alshshakireena

The Aya says:
And Muhammad is but an envoy. The envoys have indeed passed before him. So, if he died or was fatally injured, you turned over your backs. And whoever turns over the back of his feet, then he will never cause harm to Allah, while Allah will compensate the ones who thank.

My personal note:
This is a very significant Aya. It prepared the Muslims of the time to remain followers of the message of God, even after the death of the messenger.

This Aya came during that battle where there was a rumor that the prophet was fatally injured and that caused many of the followers to desert their places.

Note: the root is R-S-L and it means to envoy someone or a group of people or animals. The concrete word is RASL and it means a group of people or animals that were sent by their owners or senders. RASOOLUN means an envoy or a messenger.

Walaqad kuntum tamannawna almawta min qabli an talqawhu faqad raaytumoohu waantum tanthuroona

The Aya says:
And indeed you happened to be wishing death from before meeting him, therefore indeed, you saw him while you are looking.

My personal note:
This Aya continues the previous theme of the battle. It mentions that the followers of the message were looking forward to meeting death in the cause of God and now they have seen it and experienced it. This is pointing to the fact that the battle was hard and there was a good bit of death in it.

أَمْ حَسِبْتُمْ أَن تَدْخُلُواْ الْجَنَّةَ وَلَمَّا يَعْلَمِ اللّهُ الَّذِينَ جَاهَدُواْ مِنكُمْ وَيَعْلَمَ الصَّابِرِينَ
Am hasibtum an tadkhuloo aljannata walamma yaAAlami Allahu allatheena jahadoo minkum wayaAAlama alssabireena

The Aya says:
Or, did you (plural) think that you will enter the garden/hidden entity, while Allah has not yet known factually, those who exerted effort opposite resistance amongst you, and know factually, the ones who self restrain?

My personal note:
The Aya makes it important that we exert effort opposite resistance or struggle in the path of God. It also brings the importance of patience and self restraint.
The word that I translated into effort opposite resistance is JAHADOO. This word is often used for fighting. While fighting can be included within the struggle opposite resistance, our life is full of other struggles. One of those struggles come from within our own resistance to complying with His ordinances. This is also important since the Aya also includes “the ones who self restrain or who are patient”. As if to bring to our attention that the first struggle and resistance is against the self desires and biases that are directing us in the wrong direction. Self restraint and patience is also important when dealing with outside influences and aggressions.

وَلِيُمَحِّصَ اللّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ وَيَمْحَقَ الْكَافِرِينَ
Waliyumahhisa Allahu allatheena amanoo wayamhaqa alkafireena

The Aya says:
And in order that Allah purifies those who made themselves safe and make the rejecters vanish/dwindle.

My personal note:
The word Yumahhisa carries examination and purification at the same time. So, it has the purification from elements that are undesirable and then examining them. The same sentence carries the action of making vanish the rejecters. This is linked through WA with the previous sentence. It can be understood in two manners:

1- Making vanish the rejecters who are in the group that is with the prophet, as part of the act of purification.
2- Making them vanish period.

And both meanings are actually possible and not mutually exclusive.

In yamsaskum qarhun faqad massa alqawma qarhun mithluhu watilka alayyamu nudawiluha bayna alnnasi waliyaAAlama Allahu allatheena amanoo wayattakhitha minkum shuhadaa waAllahu la yuhibbu alththalimeena

The Aya says:
If an open wound is to touch you (plural), then a similar open wound touched the other people. And these are the days, We exchange them between the people, and in order that Allah knows in fact those who made themselves safe (in Him) and take from you witnesses/martyrs, while Allah does not love the transgressors.

My personal note:
This Aya and the other Ayat that preceded it and that are following are talking about a battle where defeat or near defeat happened to the followers of the messenger. The name of the battle is Uhud. Here, Allah is telling the followers that if they were touched by hardship and open wound of suffering, then the others were touched by it. It reminds them that Allah tests them at times to know, in manifestation of facts, the ones who remain steadfast. It also mentions the taking of witnesses. Witnessing here can encompass within it, any form of witnessing including those who died in that battle, because they witnessed the greatness and mercy of God.

وَلاَ تَهِنُوا وَلاَ تَحْزَنُوا وَأَنتُمُ الأَعْلَوْنَ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
Wala tahinoo wala tahzanoo waantumu alaAAlawna in kuntum mumineena

The aya says:
And do not lose your strength/ resolve and do not become sad, and you (plural) are the ones on top, if you happened to be ones who make themselves safe (in Allah).

My personal note:
It is a reminder to the people who follow the message and who are facing the challenges of life. It asks them not to loose their strength and resolve in following the message and not to be worried or sad about what happens. It then reassures that they are the ones on top, if they happened to make themselves safe in Allah and His message.

قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ سُنَنٌ فَسِيرُواْ فِي الأَرْضِ فَانْظُرُواْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الْمُكَذَّبِينَ
Qad khalat min qablikum sunanun faseeroo fee alardi faonthuroo kayfa kana AAaqibatu almukaththibeena

The Aya says:
Verily, passed before you (plural) consistent implementation of rules, then move in the land, then look/ contemplate how was (the) consequence of those who made untruths.

My personal note:
Sunan is a word that points to consistency and repetition. The Aya points to us that consistent rule of punishment for those who make untruths. The making of untruths can be in two ways:
1- Declaring the truth to be untruth.
2- Making untruths and claiming them to be truths

Both definitions apply here.
