Salaam all,
This is 3:130
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ لاَ تَأْكُلُواْ الرِّبَا أَضْعَافًا مُّضَاعَفَةً وَاتَّقُواْ اللّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo la takuloo alrriba adAAafan mudaAAafatan waittaqoo Allaha laAAallakum tuflihoona
The Aya says:
O those who made themselves safe (in Allah) do not eat the usury (in) multiples repeatedly, and make your-selves act according to consciousness of Allah, perhaps you (plural) will cause success.
My personal note:
I used the word Usury for Riba and that is the more common use of it. ALRRIBA may have a wider range of meaning. It is derived from growth and increase and therefore can encompass within the understanding any excessive gain to exploit the need of others, whether through interest or other means.
The multiples here does not have to mean 1-2-4-8 but anything that is equal or above because it comes as done in escalation in this sentence.
Translation of the transliterated words:
Ya ayyuha allatheena: O those who
Note: the three words used here are callings.
Amanoo: made themselves safe
Note: the root is Hamza-M-N and it means safe or safety. AMANOO is an action that is derived from the root and that is completed. It means: the action of making the object (not mentioned and therefore the subject and the object can be the same entity here) become safe happened by the subject (third person plural). So, it ends up meaning: they made themselves safe.
La: Not
Takuloo: You (plural) eat
Note: the root is Hamza-K-L and it means eating. This will then take different meanings depending on the different planes of thought that a person has. TAKULOO is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means the action of eating is happening or will be happening by the subject (second person plural)
Alrriba: : the usury/ the demand of more than you give
Note: The root is R-B-Y and it means becoming more than what was. This then means growth and increase in number and quality. ALRIBA is the becoming more in an interactive fashion. This is then taken to mean to give something and demand for more in return. This the Arabic word for Usury.
adAAafan: multiples
Note: the root Dhad-Ain-F and it means in concrete the folding of something in two equal parts. This has then two potential meanings one is multiplications from the minimal of equal to any degree that is above that with no upper limit but with the lower limit as equal. Usually, one knows the difference from the context of the sentence but also weakness comes as DaAAF while equal and above equal will come as DiAAF. Here, the multiplication meaning is the correct one linguistically. ADAAaFAN means multiples
mudaAAafatan: made multiples/ several times/escalated
Note: the root Dhad-Ain-F and it means in concrete the folding of something in two equal parts. This has then two potential meanings one is multiplications from the minimal of equal to any degree that is above that with no upper limit but with the lower limit as equal. Usually, one knows the difference from the context of the sentence but also weakness comes as DaAAF while equal and above equal will come as DiAAF. Here, the multiplication meaning is the correct one linguistically.MUDaAAaFATAN means done in escalation or one after another. ADaAAaFAN MUDaAAaFATAN together gets the meaning multiples many times and so forth.
Waittaqoo: and make yourselves act according to consciousness
Note: Wa connects what is before with what is after. This connection is often through inclusion. Either that what is before and after are included in each other, or all are included in the sentence or bigger picture. ITTAQOO is derived from the root W-Qaf-W and it means guarding or protecting. Since the best way to guard is through consciousness and action according to consciousness. ITTAQOO is an order to perform an action that is addressing a group of people. It means make your-selves act consciously of or act according to consciousness of.
Allaha: Allah
laAAallakum: perhaps
tuflihoona: You (plural) cause success
Note: the root is F-L-Ha and it means to plow the land. This is also considered as a cause for one to have the better harvest. TUFLIHOON is an action that is happening or will be happening. It means: the action of making success occur is happening or will be happening by the subject (second person plural) to the object (the same as the subject and may include others as well).
Salaam all and have a great day.
Hussein
