Salaam all,

This is 3:152
وَلَقَدْ صَدَقَكُمُ اللّهُ وَعْدَهُ إِذْ تَحُسُّونَهُم بِإِذْنِهِ حَتَّى إِذَا فَشِلْتُمْ وَتَنَازَعْتُمْ فِي الأَمْرِ وَعَصَيْتُم مِّن بَعْدِ مَا أَرَاكُم مَّا تُحِبُّونَ مِنكُم مَّن يُرِيدُ الدُّنْيَا وَمِنكُم مَّن يُرِيدُ الآخِرَةَ ثُمَّ صَرَفَكُمْ عَنْهُمْ لِيَبْتَلِيَكُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَفَا عَنكُمْ وَاللّهُ ذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Walaqad sadaqakumu Allahu waAAdahu ith tahussoonahum biithnihi hatta itha fashiltum watanazaAAtum fee alamri waAAasaytum min baAAdi ma arakum ma tuhibboona minkum man yureedu alddunya waminkum man yureedu alakhirata thumma sarafakum AAanhum liyabtaliyakum walaqad AAafa AAankum waAllahu thoo fadlin AAala almumineena

The Aya says:
And indeed, Allah was truthful to you (plural) in his promise, when you sensed them by His knowledge and permission, until you were weakened including self disputed in the implement and disobeyed after that He showed you what you like. Amongst you who seek this life and amongst you who seek the hereafter. Then He moved you away from them to test you, and He indeed forgave you. And Allah is one of abundance of favor over the ones who make themselves safe (in Him).

My personal note:
Here, the Aya goes to specifics about that incident that is called the battle of Uhud. In it the Muslims won at the beginning and then they started to collect and dispute on the gains of the battle, only to have their enemy come from behind and cause great chaos.
The Aya reprimands and offers AAafu= erasure of sin for this who disobeyed and erred during that battle. It explains and reminds them that the gains are better for the hereafter and for the discipline and the listening to the authority at that time. The Aya ends up with God’s favor on those who make themselves safe in Him.

Translation of the transliterated words:


Walaqad: and indeed
Sadaqakumu: He was truthful to you (plural)/ he happened to be true to you (plural)
Note: the root is Sad-D-Qaf and it means truth in word or deed. When it is in deed, it takes the shape of charity as the act of truthfulness. SADAQA is an action that is completed. It means: the action of truthfulness happened by the subject (third person singular pointing to God) to the object KUMU= plural you.
Allahu: Allah
waAAdahu: His promise
Note: the root is W-Ain-D and it means promise as a concept that accepts different meanings that revolve around that theme. WaAADA means promise of. HU means him and points to God.
Ith: As/when
Tahussoonahum: you (plural) sense them
Note: the root is Ha-S-S and it means sensing in a relatively subtle manner or hearing a whisper. It takes the meaning of sensing in general according to the plain of thought of the sentence. TAHUSSOONA is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of sensing is happening or will be happening by the subject (second person plural) of the object (HUM= them).
Biithnihi: by knowledge and permission of Him/ with knowledge and permission of Him/ by license of Him
Note: Bi suggests that what comes after it is either an association with the action, a tool of the action or an object of the action or any combination of the three. If bi serves as an object of the action that it serves as an emphasis of the action. ITHNI is derived from the root Hamza-TH-N and it means ear in concrete. It also means hearing, knowing and approving at the same time and may be extended to acting according to that knowledge. ITHNI means knowledge and approval/permission of or license of. HI means Him and points to God.

Fashiltum: you (plural) failed/ became unable to stand pressure /weak
Note: the root is F-SH-L and it means weakness and lack of courage and fear. Conceptually, it carries the meaning of inability to stand to a challenge and failure. FASHILTUM is an action that is completed. It means: the action of failing or becoming unable to stand pressure happened by the subject (second person plural).
watanazaAAtum: and disputed
Note: WA is a letter that links what is before with what is after. This link is through inclusion, either one is included in the other or they are all included in the bigger sentence or bigger picture. WA often corresponds with “and/ addition” but the more encompassing meaning is in inclusion one in another or all in a bigger picture or sentence. TANAZaAATUM is derived from the root N-Z-Ain and it means pulling of an entity from it’s place or just pulling. TANAZaAATUM is an action that is completed and has an interactive nature to it. It means: pulling opposite pulling happened by the subject (second person plural) to the object (same as the subject). The pulling opposite pulling takes the meaning of dispute where each pulls something to their side.

The relationship to the above abstract meaning is he fact that the Stick is rigid and unbending, as well as the fact the Stick got detached from the tree. AAaSAYTUM is an action that is completed. It means: the action of disobeying happened by the subject (second person plural)

Note: the root is Ha-B-B and it means in concrete seed. This word also means love. As if the seed is the product of love or the love will end up in a seed. TUHIBBOONA is an action that is derived from the root and that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of loving is happening or will be happening by the subject (second person plural).
Minkum: from you (plural)/ amongst you/ of you

Yureedu: seeks/ wants/ desires
Note: the root is R-W-D and it means I concrete the person that goes ahead of the people looking for resources. Therefore, the word has within it the meanings of pioneering, seeking and desiring. YUREED is an action that is being completed or will be completed that is derived from the root. It means that the action making seeking/desiring/wanting is happening by the subject (third person singular pointing). This in turn means: He desires/He wants and He seeks.
Alddunya: this life/ the nearer
Note: the root is D-N-W and it means nearness or nearing. ALDUNYA means the near. This then points to this life.waminkum: and of you (plural)/amongst you/ from you

Sarafakum: moved you (plural)/ managed you
Note: the root is Sad-R-F and it means: the moving or managing of an entity. SARAFAKUM is an action that was completed. It means: the action of moving or managing the object KUM= plural you, happened by the subject (third person singular pointing to God).
AAanhum: away from them/ about them/ in their stead/ from their stead.
Note: AAan has multiple meanings that are determined by the context. It has the general meaning of about. However, at times, it takes the meaning of away from. The determinants are the sentence and the verbs or actions that precede the AAan. This is the case here.
Liyabtaliyakum: in order that He tests you (plural)
Note: LI means to or in order to. YABTALIYAKUM is derived from the root B-L-Y and it means test or testing. YABTALIYA is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of testing is happening by the subject (third person singular) on the object KUM= plural you.

AAafa: He erased/ He forgave
Note: the root is Ain-F-W and it means erasing with an eraser. This is the concrete and in abstract it means forgive or give up something, because that means you erase it from your record, either by forgiving or by giving something to someone else. AAaFA is an action that is completed. It means: the action of erasing or forgiving happened by the subject (third person singular pointing to God).
AAankum: away from you
Note: this word takes the meaning of from or about, but at times takes the meaning of away from and so on.
waAllahu: and Allah
thoo: one of
fadlin: favor/ abundance of good
Note: the root is F-Dhad-L and it means overflowing of good or being able to fulfill all your needs of an entity and then still have more of it spared. It can also mean abundance due to the same reason. FADLIN means: overflowing of good or provision of more goodness than is required to cover the needs so that there will remain more of it left.
AAala: on/ over/ above
Almumineena: The ones who make themselves safe (in Him).
Note: the root Hamza-M-N and it means safety. ALMUMINEENA means ones who make themselves safe.
