Waallatheena kaththaboo biayatina summun wabukmun fee alththulumati man yashai Allahu yudlilhu waman yasha yajAAalhu AAala siratin mustaqeemin
The Aya says:And those who declared untrue in our signs (are) deaf and mute, in the darknesses. Whomever Allah wills He makes lost and whomever, he makes upon a straight path.
My personal note:
The aya brings attention to the person who insists that the signs of God untrue. It mentions that he is unable to understand, unable to express himself and unable to see because he lives in the plural of darkness. This means that the darkness is complex and not simple.
The Aya brings also the question of: Does Allah make some people lost? Or lose the path? And the answer is yes, but not in a haphazard way as one may understand the Aya at a superficial level.
This is because in other places of the Qur’an, it declares that Allah provides guidance to all humanity. It is those who do not act on that initial guidance that Allah will chose to misguide. It is a message for action and not inaction.
Translation of the transliterated words:

Note: KATHTHABOO is derived from the root K-TH-B and it means a untrue. The Aya says:
The there is not a moving entity in the land nor a flying entity flying with his two wings except (part of) nations/ groupings similar to you (plural). We have not squandered in the book of anything. Then towards their nurturing Lord they will be gathered.
My personal notes:
There is a very interesting message in here and that it makes humans and the life around us similar in belonging to nations and groupings of different kinds. In a sense, it makes us have more respect to all the living entities that are in the land and the sky and also in the sea.

Waqaloo lawla nuzzila AAalayhi ayatun min rabbihi qul inna Allaha qadirun AAala an yunazzila ayatan walakinna aktharahum la yaAAlamoona
The Aya says:
And they said: Why not brought down upon him (Muhammad) a sign from his nurturing lord?” Say (O Muhammad): “Allah is indeed capable of bringing down a sign, but the majority of them do not know”.
My personal note:
This goes back to the Aya 6:35 where the question of finding a sign to bring to the people. The two Ayat connect in the issue that people will keep on asking for a sign according to their widely diverging biases and many will not be convinced more because of sticking to their ways than anything else.

The Aya says:
The ones who respond are only those who listen and concur. While the dead, Allah will raise them, then towards him they are returned.
My personal note:
The Aya brings about the issue that only those who listen intently and probably persuaded by the message will respond to it.
Then it contrasts this to the dead. As if to bring about two issues in the same sentence:
1- The statement that the dead will be brought to their lord is true and is understood from this sentence.
2- There is another additional understanding and that often times the Qur’an likens those who do not listen to the message with the dead because the message does not move them. So, the statement may be pointing to those with unresponsive/dead hearts and it reminds them that they will be returned back to their lord.

The aya says:
And if their avoidance were big on you (O Muhammad), then if you (singular) could seek a tunnel in the ground or a ladder in the sky, then come to them with a sign. And if Allah willed then he would have gathered them all upon the guidance, so do not be amongst those who lack knoweldge.
My personal note:
The Aya carries with it the message that even if the prophet (pbuh) were able to get the rejectors a sign to their liking, they would have, or at least some of them rejected again. This is a message to the prophet, but also to anyone who is proselytizing, that some people will reject anything no matter how clear and that is the power of denial.
The Aya is a form of literary style where the question is posed and the answer is not given, but is understood to be in the negative. So, the statement is you can get them another sign, but they will not accept it.
So, the Aya continues that Allah did not will all humanity be gathered upon the guidance. This is because Allah wanted them to come to the guidance by their own free will and he provided them the tools and the evidence so if they did not get guided or at least attempt to move towards guidance then they are responsible for their actions.
The Aya ends up with the order to the prophet (pbuh) not to be amongst those who do not know. It is letting him know that Allah gave them enough signs for them to see. Their refusal to see is not because of the lack of signs, but because of their own selves.

Walaqad kuththibat rusulun min qablika fasabaroo AAala ma kuththiboo waoothoo hatta atahum nasruna wala mubaddila likalimati Allahi walaqad jaaka min nabai almursaleena
The Aya says:
And indeed, envoys were declared untrue before you (O Muhammad), so they persevered above what they were declared untrue, and hurt until our backing came to them. And no changer to Allah’s statements, and came to you (singular) of the news of the envoys.
My personal note:
This aya is giving solace to the prophet as he was dealing with the constant denial of his people. This Sura, different from the previous Suras that I have already translated, came in Mecca and so it is dealing with the issues of rejection that the prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) was dealing with.
I translated SABAROO as persevered which is correct, but the word has also the meaning of self restraint and patience and all apply. The role of self restraint here is in holding himself from loosing his cool or his trust in God or even from acting in a reactive manner without much thought or contemplation about it.
The term, no changer to Allah’s statements come often in the Qur’an. It is often coming in relation to Allah’s backing of His messengers and His followers and therefore the reminder at the end of the Aya of the news of the previous messengers and how Allah backed them all. It is a reassurance of Allah’s support even when people are being tested in the most difficult way.
