وَمَا كَانَ اللّهُ لِيُعَذِّبَهُمْ وَأَنتَ فِيهِمْ وَمَا كَانَ اللّهُ مُعَذِّبَهُمْ وَهُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ
Wama kana Allahu liyuAAaththibahum waanta feehim wama kana Allahu muAAaththibahum wahum yastaghfiroona
The Aya says:
And Allah was not to torture them while you (Muhammad) are amongst them, and Allah was not torturing them while they are asking forgiveness/ protective cover.
My personal note:
This Aya brings about an important message to humanity that as long as they have pious people amongst them and as long as they pray for forgiveness and protection from Allah then they are protected from overwhelming forms of suffering that lead to total destruction.

Here they continue with the challenges to the message by asking what they cannot deal with once it comes. It points to their arrogance mixed with their ignorance.

And when our signs are recited upon them they said: “We heard. Had we willed we would have said similar to it. This is nothing but legends of the ancients.”

The Aya brings about a potential answer of many people who reject the message and it still sounds the same to this day.

وَإِذْ يَمْكُرُ بِكَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لِيُثْبِتُوكَ أَوْ يَقْتُلُوكَ أَوْ يُخْرِجُوكَ وَيَمْكُرُونَ وَيَمْكُرُ اللّهُ وَاللّهُ خَيْرُ الْمَاكِرِينَ
Waith yamkuru bika allatheena kafaroo liyuthbitooka aw yaqtulooka aw yukhrijooka wayamkuroona wayamkuru Allahu waAllahu khayru almakireena
The Aya says:
And as they scheme against you (singular) those who rejected in order that they pin you down or kill you or kick you out. And they scheme, while Allah plans and Allah is the best of planners.
My personal note:
The term yuthbitooka is often used in a positive sense to mean to make you well entrenched. However, here within this context, it carries the limiting of movement and maneuverability and therefore a negative connotation very much like when someone is wrestling and then pinned down in a position but the opponent.
The Aya Also also brings about that Allah will always counter the negative plan of the rejecters against His people and message with His own far superior plan of the bigger picture. In a sense He reassures those who follow his path that they are safe within a much bigger plan that is positive for the bigger issues at hand.
