وَإِن كُنتُمْ عَلَى سَفَرٍ وَلَمْ تَجِدُواْ كَاتِبًا فَرِهَانٌ مَّقْبُوضَةٌ فَإِنْ أَمِنَ بَعْضُكُم بَعْضًا فَلْيُؤَدِّ الَّذِي اؤْتُمِنَ أَمَانَتَهُ وَلْيَتَّقِ اللّهَ رَبَّهُ وَلاَ تَكْتُمُواْ الشَّهَادَةَ وَمَن يَكْتُمْهَا فَإِنَّهُ آثِمٌ قَلْبُهُ وَاللّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ عَلِيمٌ
Wain kuntum AAala safarin walam tajidoo katiban farihanun maqboodatun fain amina baAAdukum baAAdan falyuaddi allathee itumina amanatahu walyattaqi Allaha rabbahu wala taktumoo alshshahadata waman yaktumha fainnahu athimun qalbuhu waAllahu bima taAAmaloona AAaleemun

The Aya says:
And if you happened to be traveling and did not find a scribe, then collateral received. So, if you trusted each other, then the one who was trusted shall deliver his safe keep, and he shall make himself conscious of Allah, his nurturing Lord. And do not suppress the testimony, and whoever suppresses her, then, verily, his heart broke God’s law. And Allah, in what you do, all knowing.

My personal note:
The Aya continues that in case of travel and the ability to write a contract of the debt, then leaving a collateral or a pawn will be fine. It then continues with the suggestion that if people trusted each other, then that would be fine. However, it reminds the one who was trusted that he should deliver the debt when the time came. It reminds him to be conscious of Allah and that breaking the trust is a sign that he/she broke God’s law. The Aya ends up reminding us that Allah knows what we do.

The Aya says:
O people who made themselves safe (in God and his message), if you exchange debt for a named period then write it. And a just scribe will write, and a scribe shall not refuse to write as Allah has taught him. So, he will write, and the one who is endbted will dictate, and he should make himself conscious of Allah, his nurturing Lord. And he (the endebted) should not lessen from him (the debt) an entity. So, if the endebted was light brained or weak or cannot dictate, then his guardian in justice will dictate, and you (plural) will seek two witnesses of your men, and if they (two men) do not happen to be (present) then a man and two women that you approve as witnesses. In case one of the two women errs, then the other will remind her. And the witnesses shall not refuse if they were called, and do not get bored of writing him (the debt), small or big, to the end of it’s period. This (is) more just at God’s presence, and more upright to the witnessing, and closer to you (plural) not becoming uneasy (about it). Unless it happened to be trade continuingly present, that you manage between you, then there is no tilt to error on you that you do not write it (the trade). And make witnessing happen if you sold to each other. And no harm shall happen to a scribe nor witness, and if you do (harm them), then that is leaving God’s way by you. And make yourselves conscious of Allah, and Allah teaches you, and Allah, in every entity, knowing.

My personal note:
This is probably the longest Aya in the Qur’an. It covers the needs to have people write their contract of debt and the obligation of people to write it and to witness is. In case of trade then there is no need to necessarily write, but to have witnesses witness the trade. The Aya asks that people write a small or a big debt.

This Aya has in it the issue that if two men were not present to witness, then a man and two women shall witness it. This is an area of debate as to why. The Aya mentions that if one of the women errs in this affair, then the other will remind her. That is the end of that explanation. Muslims disagreed if this rule applies only in this case, or whether it should be applied all the time. Many scholars will mention that this rule may not apply to other situation where there is witnessing.

The Aya says:
And make yourselves conscious of a day, in which you will be returned to Allah. Then, each self will be made to meet dues (of) what she earned. And they will not be treated unfairly.

The Aya continues the theme. It asks us to be conscious of the day when we meet our creator. At that time, we will be made to meet the consequences of our actions. God also reminds us of his justice and that we will not be treated unfairly.

The Aya says:
And if he happened to be one of narrow abilities, then waiting till wider abilities, and if you make charity happen, then it is better for you, if you (plural) happened to know.

This Aya continues the theme related to the usury. It mentions that if the person that took the loan is unable to pay, then waiting till a better time for him/her. It also mentions that charity is better for us, if we happened to have knowledge.

So, if you (plural) do not do, then be informed of a war from Allah and his messenger. And if you returned (to God’s obedience), then to you belong your principal. You will not transgress, nor will you be treated unfairly.

The Aya mentioned that if people did not stop the usury then they are at war or distancing from God and his prophet. It also mentions that they can keep the principal amount so as not to transgress nor be victims of transgression.

Inna allatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati waaqamoo alssalata waatawoo alzzakata lahum ajruhum AAinda rabbihim wala khawfun AAalayhim wala hum yahzanoona

The Aya says:
Verily, those who made themselves safe (in God and his message) and did helpful deeds and kept up the prayer, and made come the growth and fruition/almsgiving. To them belongs their compensation at their nurturing Lord, and no fear on them, and they will not be sad.

My personal note:
This gives a formula of success. That is the attaining safety in God followed by the performance of helpful deeds in a good direction as well as prayer and almsgiving. The word ZAKAT means action of growth and fruition. This term encompasses almsgiving and goes a little further in many directions.

This is 2:276
يَمْحَقُ اللّهُ الْرِّبَا وَيُرْبِي الصَّدَقَاتِ وَاللّهُ لاَ يُحِبُّ كُلَّ كَفَّارٍ أَثِيمٍ
Yamhaqu Allahu alrriba wayurbee alssadaqati waAllahu la yuhibbu kulla kaffarin atheemin

The Aya says:
Allah diminishes the Usury and makes grow the charities. And Allah (does) not love each rejecter, breaker (of His) laws.

My personal note:
As if God is telling us that the growth that one sees in usury is going to be diminished in God’s eyes, either in this life or the next or both. The Aya also reminds us that God does not love the one that rejects and breaks HIS laws.

Translation of the transliterated words:
Yamhaqu: He diminishes/he destroys
Note: the root is M-Ha-Qaf and it means diminishing an entity or destroying it. YAMHAQU is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of diminishing or destroying, is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person singular pointing to Allah) to the object (Alrriba, coming up).

Alrriba: the usury/ the demand of more than you give
Note: The root is R-B-Y and it means becoming more than what was. This then means growth and increase in number and quality. ALRIBA is the becoming more in an interactive fashion. This is then taken to mean to give something and demand for more in return. This the Arabic word for Usury.

It means: the action of loving is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person singular pointing to God). This, in effect means, HE loves
Kulla: Every/each
Note: the root K-L-L and it means the parts that make the whole together. Therefore it means all at times and each or every at others depending on the situation. Here, it means every.
Kaffarin: rejecter
Note: the root is K-F-R and it means covering. One of the concrete meanings of the word is the burying of the seed in the ground to plant it. This word also takes the meaning of rejecting or refusing something, since the person that rejects something will bury it in the ground. KAFFARIN is the one that rejects a lot.
Atheemin: breaking of (God’s) law
Note: the root is Hamza-TH-M and it means doing something that is wrong or breaking a law. ATHEEMIN is the one that breaks God’s law.
