يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ إِذَا تَدَايَنتُم بِدَيْنٍ إِلَى أَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى فَاكْتُبُوهُ وَلْيَكْتُب بَّيْنَكُمْ كَاتِبٌ بِالْعَدْلِ وَلاَ يَأْبَ كَاتِبٌ أَنْ يَكْتُبَ كَمَا عَلَّمَهُ اللّهُ فَلْيَكْتُبْ وَلْيُمْلِلِ الَّذِي عَلَيْهِ الْحَقُّ وَلْيَتَّقِ اللّهَ رَبَّهُ وَلاَ يَبْخَسْ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا فَإن كَانَ الَّذِي عَلَيْهِ الْحَقُّ سَفِيهًا أَوْ ضَعِيفًا أَوْ لاَ يَسْتَطِيعُ أَن يُمِلَّ هُوَ فَلْيُمْلِلْ وَلِيُّهُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَاسْتَشْهِدُواْ شَهِيدَيْنِ من رِّجَالِكُمْ فَإِن لَّمْ يَكُونَا رَجُلَيْنِ فَرَجُلٌ وَامْرَأَتَانِ مِمَّن تَرْضَوْنَ مِنَ الشُّهَدَاء أَن تَضِلَّ إْحْدَاهُمَا فَتُذَكِّرَ إِحْدَاهُمَا الأُخْرَى وَلاَ يَأْبَ الشُّهَدَاء إِذَا مَا دُعُواْ وَلاَ تَسْأَمُوْاْ أَن تَكْتُبُوْهُ صَغِيرًا أَو كَبِيرًا إِلَى أَجَلِهِ ذَلِكُمْ أَقْسَطُ عِندَ اللّهِ وَأَقْومُ لِلشَّهَادَةِ وَأَدْنَى أَلاَّ تَرْتَابُواْ إِلاَّ أَن تَكُونَ تِجَارَةً حَاضِرَةً تُدِيرُونَهَا بَيْنَكُمْ فَلَيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ جُنَاحٌ أَلاَّ تَكْتُبُوهَا وَأَشْهِدُوْاْ إِذَا تَبَايَعْتُمْ وَلاَ يُضَآرَّ كَاتِبٌ وَلاَ شَهِيدٌ وَإِن تَفْعَلُواْ فَإِنَّهُ فُسُوقٌ بِكُمْ وَاتَّقُواْ اللّهَ وَيُعَلِّمُكُمُ اللّهُ وَاللّهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ

The Aya says:
O people who made themselves safe (in God and his message), if you exchange debt for a named period then write it. And a just scribe will write, and a scribe shall not refuse to write as Allah has taught him. So, he will write, and the one who is endbted will dictate, and he should make himself conscious of Allah, his nurturing Lord. And he (the endebted) should not lessen from him (the debt) an entity. So, if the endebted was light brained or weak or cannot dictate, then his guardian in justice will dictate, and you (plural) will seek two witnesses of your men, and if they (two men) do not happen to be (present) then a man and two women that you approve as witnesses. In case one of the two women errs, then the other will remind her. And the witnesses shall not refuse if they were called, and do not get bored of writing him (the debt), small or big, to the end of it’s period. This (is) more just at God’s presence, and more upright to the witnessing, and closer to you (plural) not becoming uneasy (about it). Unless it happened to be trade continuingly present, that you manage between you, then there is no tilt to error on you that you do not write it (the trade). And make witnessing happen if you sold to each other. And no harm shall happen to a scribe nor witness, and if you do (harm them), then that is leaving God’s way by you. And make yourselves conscious of Allah, and Allah teaches you, and Allah, in every entity, knowing.

My personal note:
This is probably the longest Aya in the Qur’an. It covers the needs to have people write their contract of debt and the obligation of people to write it and to witness is. In case of trade then there is no need to necessarily write, but to have witnesses witness the trade. The Aya asks that people write a small or a big debt.

This Aya has in it the issue that if two men were not present to witness, then a man and two women shall witness it. This is an area of debate as to why. The Aya mentions that if one of the women errs in this affair, then the other will remind her. That is the end of that explanation. Muslims disagreed if this rule applies only in this case, or whether it should be applied all the time. Many scholars will mention that this rule may not apply to other situation where there is witnessing.

Note: the root is F-S-Qaf and it means in concrete when the seed is out of it’s pod or when the rat is out of her house. This is then understood as when one is out of the right place for them. In the Qur’an, it is used to mean being outside of God’s way. FUSOOQUN is the action of leaving God’s way
Bikum: in you (plural)/ by you/ with you
Waittaqoo: and make yourselves conscious of
Note: Wa means and. ITTAQOO is derived from the root W-Qaf-W and it means guarding or protecting. Since the best way to guard is through consciousness, I use the meaning consciousness here. ITTAQOO is an order to perform an action that is addressing a group of people. It means make yourselves conscious of or be conscious of.
Allaha: Allah
wayuAAallimukumu: and HE teaches you
Note: WA means And. YuAAaLLAMIKUM is derived from the root Ain-L-M and it means knowing and knowledge. YuAALLEMUKUM is an action that is being completed or will be completed that is derived from the root. This verb means: the action of making know is happening by the subject (third person singular pointing to Allah, coming up) to the object KUMU which means you (plural). This then means: and HE teaches you.
Allahu: Allah/God
waAllahu: And Allah
Bikulli: in every/in all
Note: Bi in this place gives a meaning of attachment and close association to what comes next. I chose in for the meaning. KULLI is derived from the root K-L-L and it means the parts put together. This is the concrete and it means all or every or each.
shayin: entity
Note: the root is SH-Y-Hamza and it means entity. This entity can be any entity whether concrete or abstract as long as it is an entity. SHAYIN means entity.
AAaleemun: knowledgeable/all knowing
Note: the root is Ain-L-M and it means knowing or knowledge. AAaLEEMUN is the one that knows a lot, the all knowing.
