يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ لاَ تَغْلُواْ فِي دِينِكُمْ وَلاَ تَقُولُواْ عَلَى اللّهِ إِلاَّ الْحَقِّ إِنَّمَا الْمَسِيحُ عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ رَسُولُ اللّهِ وَكَلِمَتُهُ أَلْقَاهَا إِلَى مَرْيَمَ وَرُوحٌ مِّنْهُ فَآمِنُواْ بِاللّهِ وَرُسُلِهِ وَلاَ تَقُولُواْ ثَلاَثَةٌ انتَهُواْ خَيْرًا لَّكُمْ إِنَّمَا اللّهُ إِلَـهٌ وَاحِدٌ سُبْحَانَهُ أَن يَكُونَ لَهُ وَلَدٌ لَّهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَات وَمَا فِي الأَرْضِ وَكَفَى بِاللّهِ وَكِيلاً

The Aya says:
O people of the book do not inflate in your religion and do not say upon Allah except the binding truth. The Messiah Jesus son of Mary was none other than Allah’s envoy and His statement, He casted it towards Mary including a life giving breath from Him (Allah). Therefore, make your selves safe in Allah and His envoys and do not say three. Desist, it is better for you. Allah is none other than one worthy of worship. He is above having a child of his. To Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is in the earth. And Allah is sufficient of a guarantor.
My personal note:
The issue of His statement needs to be explained. The word KALIMATUN is the product of the action of speech. This product is the word or statement that comes from it. It also can be the product of those actions that come from those statements. In the case of Jesus, the Islamic understanding is that He is the product of Allah’s statement. The statement is BE and IT IS.
The other term is ROOHUN MINHU and this I translated as a “life giving breath from HIM”. This, to me, is the closest meaning to how I understood the aya to be saying.
The Aya is also adamant about the denying of trinity, including the idea of a one divided by three.

Ahla: people of
Note: the root is Hamza-H-L and one concrete meaning of the word is the fat that surrounds the back of the animal. It is used conceptually to mean family or any of the people that are closely associated with the entity being discussed. The Aya says:
O you humanity, indeed came to you the envoy by the binding truth from your nurturing Lord then make your selves safe, better for you. And if you reject then to Allah belongs what is in the heavens and the earth and Allah happened to be knowledgeable, wise.
My personal note:
The term YA AYYUHAA Annas is an address to all humanity, or to all humanity that receives this message. This is in contrast with YA AYYAUHA allatheena Amanoo which addresses the believers amongst humanity.
There is an important message here. It declares that it is better for us, in this life and the next, as humans to make ourselves safe in Allah and his messenger. The Aya reminds us that God does not need our belief in him, but it is really us who need to make ourselves safe in Him.

Illa tareeqa jahannama khalideena feeha abadan wakana thalika AAala Allahi yaseeran
The Aya says:
If not the well trodden path of Hell, staying in her forever and that happened to be, on Allah, easy.
My personal note:
The Aya continues the theme from the previous Ayat. It mentions that the people who reject Allah and commit injustice will not be guided to any path, but the path of Hell. This is then the path of those on whom anger has fallen as in Surat Alfatiha.
May Allah open our hearts to hearing and accepting and internalizing his message so that we can live according to it and in harmony with it. May He also guide us to the straight path and protect us from the paths of those on whom anger has fallen or those who lost the path.

Note: JAHANNAM is one of the Arabic names for Hell. The root J-H-N-M points to a very deep well where if one falls in it, there is no way out or very very difficult to come out. The relationship with Hell is that it is a deep trouble to fall into.
Khalidan: Staying unchanged/ staying forever
Note: the root is KH-L-D and it means something that stays the same. In concrete, it is used for the rocks and the mountains that seem to be unchanged through the ages. KHALIDAN means staying or unchanging.
Feeha: in her
Abadan: forever
Note: the root is Hamza-B-D and it means Ever and a very long time. ABADAN means Ever or forever. The concrete word for ABD means wild or wild beast and the relationship is that in the desert where the houses are tents, the wilderness is the thing that lasts forever, or so it seemed to the Arabs.

My personal note:
The Aya continues the theme from the previous Ayat. It mentions that the people who reject Allah and commit injustice will not be guided to any path, but the path of Hell. This is then the path of those on whom anger has fallen as in Surat Alfatiha.
May Allah open our hearts to hearing and accepting and internalizing his message so that we can live according to it and in harmony with it. May He also guide us to the straight path and protect us from the paths of those on whom anger has fallen or those who lost the path.

My personal note:
This builds on the previous Aya and that is because of the injustice, then Allah will not provide them with protection nor guidance to the path of Allah which is well trodden and is easy to see for those who open their eyes.
One question would be whether they are able to get out of this predicament and the answer is yes, once they move out of the attitude of rejection or the attitude of discarding the reality that they see in front of them.

Any movement away from God’s path is a misguidance and a great injustice against oneself as well as against God. When one creates obstacles to prevent others from reaching God’s path then the injustice becomes against oneself, God and humanity.

لَّـكِنِ اللّهُ يَشْهَدُ بِمَا أَنزَلَ إِلَيْكَ أَنزَلَهُ بِعِلْمِهِ وَالْمَلآئِكَةُ يَشْهَدُونَ وَكَفَى بِاللّهِ شَهِيدًا
Lakini Allahu yashhadu bima anzala ilayka anzalahu biAAilmihi waalmalaikatu yashhadoona wakafa biAllahi shaheedan
The Aya says:
However, Allah witnesses in what he brought down towards you (singular). He brought it down by His knowledge. And the Angels witness, while Allah is sufficient of a witness.

The aya brings that Allah witnesses to the veracity of the message that was brought down towards Muhammad (pbuh). This is the strongest testimony since it comes from the one who has all knowledge and the most accurate knowledge.

رُّسُلاً مُّبَشِّرِينَ وَمُنذِرِينَ لِئَلاَّ يَكُونَ لِلنَّاسِ عَلَى اللّهِ حُجَّةٌ بَعْدَ الرُّسُلِ وَكَانَ اللّهُ عَزِيزًا حَكِيمًا
Rusulan mubashshireena wamunthireena lialla yakoona lilnnasi AAala Allahi hujjatun baAAda alrrusuli wakana Allahu AAazeezan hakeeman
The Aya says:
Envoys, bringing glad tidings and warning, so that there will not be a valid excuse for the people upon Allah after the envoys. And Allah happened to be dominantly strong, wise.
My personal note:
The aya mentions that the messengers/ envoys of God bring the glad tidings and warn people. This way the people cannot use the potentially valid excuse of “I was not informed”. The Aya reaffirms that this is linked to Allah’s dominance, strength and wisdom.

And envoys we narrated upon you (singular) from before and envoys we did not narrate upon you (singular). And Allah spoke to Moses speech/speaking.
