Ya banee adama khuthoo zeenatakum AAinda kulli masjidin wakuloo waishraboo wala tusrifoo innahu la yuhibbu almusrifeena

The Aya says:

O children of Adam take your adornment at every Masjid and eat and drink and do not be wasteful. He (Allah) indeed does not love the wasteful.

My personal note:
The term ZEENA means adornment or anything that covers the surface or body and makes it better looking. It is used for the grass and flowers that cover the surface of the earth and it is also used for clothing and other things that we put on our bodies. So, the word covers clothing but can also include other adornments. The order here within the context of contrasting to people who visited the Masjid in Mecca naked in the pre islamic times. Zeena does not mean being excessive or putting something that brings too much attention.

This is why the aya ends with ordering us not be MUSRIFS which I translated as wasteful but the term covers any excessive consumption of money or effort and it includes being too extravagant in the consumption and spending but also any spending or any effort done in an area that is forbidden by God.

Translation of the transliterated words:
Ya: O
Banee: sons of/ children of
Note: the root is B-N-Y and it means building and it also mean son or child. The relationship between the two meanings is that the son is the product of building the family. Here, it is used to mean child or son. BANEE: means sone of or children of
Adama: Adam
Khuthoo: take
Note: the root is Hamza-KH-TH and it means to take. KHUTHOO is an order addressed to a group. It means: take.
Zeenatakum: your adornement
Note: ZEENA is derived from the root Z-Y-N and it means what one puts on to add beauty to the look. It is used to cover clothes, jewelry and make up. For the land, it is the grass and the flowers. ZEENATA means: adornment of. KUM I plural you.

Aainda: at
Kulli: every/ each
Note: KULLI is derived from the root K-L-L and it means the parts put together. This is the concrete and it means all or every or each. It can also be extended conceptually to mean the parts surrounding an entity. KULLI means every, or each.
masjidin place of worship/ place and time of sujood/ mosque
Note: the root is S-J-D and in concrete it means in one concrete form: a tree that is tilting downward due to a heavy load of fruits. It therefore is used conceptually to mean tilting downward of the face or the body including prostration as well as showing any sign of submission to a higher power. The range of meaning all those meanings together and one needs to understand it as both unless there is a strong reason in the sentence or elsewhere in the Qur’an to make one meaning inappropriate or impossible. MASJID is the place and can also apply in addition to time of Sujood and that is prostration. The term is used for any place of worship and more particularly a mosque.
Wakuloo: and eat

Waishraboo: and drink

Note: the root is Ha-B-B and it means in concrete seed. This word also means love. As if the seed is the product of love or the love will end up in a seed. YUHIBBU is an action that is derived from the root and that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of loving is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person singular pointing to Allah) of the object (ALMUFSIDEEN= the ones who cause damage/ harm). LA YUHIBBU means: He does not love.
Almusrifeena: the wasteful spendors/ the frivolous spenders/ the spendors for no benefit
Note: the root is S-R-F and it means in concrete the throwing of the water without watering a tree or watering an animal. Conceptually, it is used for inappropriate expenditure or too much expenditure, since that is inappropriate. Basically it carries the concept of wasteful spending of resources and energy for the wrong cause and so on. ALMUSRIFEENA are the inappropriately wasteful or spending for no benefit or frivolous spenders.

Fareeqan hada wafareeqan haqqa AAalayhimu alddalalatu innahumu ittakhathoo alshshayateena awliyaa min dooni Allahi wayahsaboona annahum muhtadoona

The Aya says:
A group He guided and a group became deserving of the perdition. They took the devils guardian short of Allah and they estimate that they are guided.

My personal note:
The Aya indicates that the human being is at risk of becoming deserving of misguidance when he or she takes a guardian other than
Allah. So we have to be careful who to take as guardian.

One way to take Allah as guardian is through following His teachings and not the teachings that go opposite to Allah’s teachings. For following those opposite teachings put us at risk of taking other guardians and of becoming deserving of being lost.

This does not mean that we have not hope of finding the path back again. However it depends on our decisions of who we take as guardian and of we return to Allah as our guardian even in small steps then he will support us to the bigger steps and then to the path of salvation.

Fareeqan: a group
Note: the root F-R-Qaf and it means separating apart or dispersing. FAREEQAN is a product of that separation and that means a group.
Hada: He guided

It means: the action of becoming binding right or binding happened to the subject (ALDDALALATU= the misguidance)

Aaalayhimu: upon them
Alddalalatu: the misguidance/ the being lost
Note: the root is Dhad-L-L and it means getting lost as in lost the path or road in concrete terminology. Conceptually, it is used for any form of loosing the path, whether it is the path to a location or to the truth, or to be correct spiritually and so on. The imagery is very strong since loosing the path in the desert can mean near certain death. ALDDALALATU means the perdition or the being lost.

Innahumu: they/ they indeed
Ittakhathoo: took/ took for themselves
Note: the root is Hamza-KH-TH and it means to take. ITTAKHATHOO is an action that is completed. It means: the action of taking the object (ALSHSHAYATEEN= the devils) happened by the subject (third person plural).
alshshayateena: Satans/ the ones that is displaced from God’s mercy and works on displacing others/ the devils.
Note: the root is SH-Ta-N and it means in one of the concrete meanings the long rope and in another the long rope at the well that one uses to get the bucket out of the water. The term is used to mean far and away (in all the planes of thought) as the long rope and it is also used for displacement or pulling away, as a parallel to the rope that pulls the bucked out of the water. ALSHSHAYATEEN are the ones who are far or away (from God’s mercy) and who works at pulling others away through his long “rope”. It is the word used from Satan or devils or any entity to which this designation applies.
Awliyaa: guardians/ directors
Note: the root is W-L-Y and it means direction or following direction with some guarantee. It comes close to guardianship. AWLIYAA is either the one who is a guardian or the one who receives guardianship of another or both. In this context, guardian and director apply.

Note: The root is D-W-N and it means short of someone or something. It can also mean lower than at times depending on the plane of thought of the sentence. DOONI means short of or below of.

Qul amara rabbee bialqisti waaqeemoo wujoohakum AAinda kulli masjidin waodAAoohu mukhliseena lahu alddeena kama badaakum taAAoodoona


The Aya says:
Say (O Muhammad): My nurturing lord ordered by the fairness/ justice and you (plural) establish your faces at every time and place of prostration, and call upon Him making sole to Him your sense of obligation. As He inititated you, you return.

My personal note:
The term AQEEMOO wujahakum Ainda kulli Masjid covers the meaning of establish the face or direction at every time and place of Sujood where the Sujood is used for ritual prayer and that covers the notion that Muslims should pray whenever the time to prayer comes and also whenever they enter into a MASJID even if it is a time for a ritual prayer.

The term call upon Him making sole to Him your sense of obligation is an order that all of our actions that we believe are religiously mandated should be done with the sole purpose of being for Allah. However, this also informs all of our relationships with other human beings as being guided primarily by our relationship with Allah. So, we are supposed to be nice to the fellow man not because of personal reasons but because this is what Allah wants us to do and this way we can become nice to the person that is not likeable for one reason or another. It moderates our human interactions from going to extremes.

Qul: say
Note: QUL is derived from the root Qaf-W-L and it means saying in any way possible. QUL is an order addressed to a singular. It means: Say.
Amara: he ordered
Note: AMARA is derived from the root Hamza-M-R and it means ordering something and the implementation of it. Sometimes it attains the implementation part or matter as in personal matter and so forth, and at times it is the order and implementation of the order, depending on the situation in the sentence. AMARA is an action that is completed. It means: the action of ordering or ordering to implement happened by the subject (third person singular).

Rabbee: my nurturing Lord
Note: the root is R-B-B and it means nurturing and Lordship as two components of the meaning that can be present together or one at a time according to the context of the sentence. RABBEE is nurturing Lord of mine.
Bialqisti: by the justice

In this context it carries the meaning of being solely or exclusively designated. MUKHLISEEN means you (plural) making sincere/ sole/ solely designated

Alddeena: the religion/ the fulfilled obligation

Note: the root is D-Y-N and it means debt or law or religion. What groups them together is the concept of obligation, since religion is the obligation of man towards God. DEENAN is obligation or religion, with religion being the obligation of man towards God.

Badaakum: He started you (plural)/ He initiated you
Note: the root is B-D- hamza and it means the beginning of the matter or the initiation of it or the start of it. BADAAKUM is an action that is completed. It means: the action of initiating or starting the object (KUM= plural you) happened by the subject (third person singular pointing to Allah)

Note: TaAAOODOONA is derived from the root Ain-W-D and it means repeat. It can also mean return since the return is a repetition of previous position. Waitha faAAaloo fahishatan qaloo wajadna AAalayha abaana waAllahu amarana biha qul inna Allaha la yamuru bialfahshai ataqooloona AAala Allahi ma la taAAlamoona


The Aya says:

And when they did an abomination they said: “This is what we found our acestors upon and Allah ordered us by it.” Respond (O Muhammad): Indeed Allah does not order by the abomination. Do you say upon Allah what you have no knowledge of?!

My personal note:
The abomination that is mentioned here is related to the subject of clothing that covers our private areas and that was mentioned in the immediately preceding Ayat.

According to the books of Tafsir/ exegesis, the people of Arabia used to circumbulate around the Kaaba naked unless they were of the tribe of Qureish. The Aya basically says that practice has no place and no justification for Allah does not order an abomination.

Ya banee adama la yaftinannakumu alshshaytanu kama akhraja abawaykum mina aljannati yanziAAu AAanhuma libasahuma liyuriyahuma sawatihima innahu yarakum huwa waqabeeluhu min haythu la tarawnahum inna jaAAalna alshshayateena awliyaa lillatheena la yuminoona


The Aya says:
O children of Adam do not let Satan test you/ trick you as he made your two parents exit the garden pulling away their garments to let reveal their private parts. Indeed, he and his kind see you from where you do not see them. We have made the devils guardians/directors to those who do not make themselves trust/ safe (in Allah).

My personal note:
The Aya brings about several important issues. One of them is the fact that the default place for humanity is the Garden where Adam and his spouse were or a place even better than that. However, they allowed Satan to kick them out of it although temporarily duing this life. This also suggests that Allah had designated heaven as our final place unless we do something that prevents us from going there. It is by our faults that we end up in other than our intended place.

The second issue is the matter of making the devils directors or guardians to those who lack trust and safety in Allah. This matter is profound in a way. The reason is that if we contemplate our decision making, the majority of our decisions are based on trust and safety and not necessarily on verifying everything that we are told. If we verify everything we are told then we are paralyzed. So, if a person decides to make a decision that is contrary to what Allah ordered and out of lack of trust in Allah, then this person is trusting another entity and that entity is then considered SHAYTAN. This is because the term Shaytan applies to any entity that is away from Allah’s mercy and makes people move away from Allah’s mercy and this entity could be the person themselves and it could be others whether they are humans or devils or whatever.

May Allah be with us always and build our safety and trust in Him to the strongest degrees possible.

Therefore, in abstract, the word suggests an extreme test with hardship in it, or a burn with fire or even taking someone’s eyes with the glitter of the false Gold and silver. Here, it means the severe test that has hardship in it. YAFTINANNAKUM is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of testing the object (KUM= plural you) is happening or will be happening by the subject (first person singular).

It means: the action of making the object (ABAWAYKUM= your two parents) come happened by the subject (first person singular pointing to Satan)

Abawaykum: your two parents/ your two ancestors
Note: the root is root Hamza-B and it means father or parent. ABAWAY means two parents of or two ancestors of. KUM means plural you. Here fathers is extended from parents to the two original ancestors.

Mina: from
aljannati: the garden
Note: ALJANNATI is derived from the root J-N-N and it means hidden or hiding. It is therefore used to mean darkness because it hides as well as garden because gardens can be hidden or because it has less light than the place out in the sun for the Arabs of the desert. ALJANNATI means the garden and the use of the AL suggests that Adam knew what is being talked about.
yanziAAu: he removes/ He pulls
Note: YANZiAAU is derived from the root N-Z-Ain and it means pulling of an entity from it’s place or just pulling. YANZiAAU is an action that is being completed or will be. It means: the action of pulling the object (libasahuma= the clothing of the two) is happening or will be happening by the subject (first person singular pointing to Satan).
Aaanhuma: from the two/ away from the two
Libasahuma: their clothing
Note: LIBASA is derived from the root L-B-S and it means in concrete clothing or clothes. LIBASA is clothing of. HUMA is the two of them.

Liyuriyahuma: to make them see / to reveal to the two
Note: Li means to or in order to. YURIYAHUMA is derived from the root is R-Hamza-Y and it means viewing or seeing. YURIYAHUMA is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of making the object (HUMA= the two of them) view or see is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person singular)

Sawatihima: their private parts
Note: the root is S-Y-Hamza or S-W-HAMZA and it means hated word or deed. It can also conceptually mean ugly or vulnerable. All the meanings are linked somehow by one concept. This word then means different things according to the plane of thought that is being talked about. SAWA is what makes an entity vulnerable or weak or ugly. SWATIHIMA is pointing to the private are because of the vulnerability of it.
Innahu: He indeed
Yarakum: He sees you (plural)
Note: YARAKUM is derived from the root is R-Hamza-Y and it means viewing or seeing. YARAKUM is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of seeing the object (KUM plural you) is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person singular)

WA often corresponds with “and/ addition” but the more encompassing meaning. QABEELUHU is derived from the root Qaf-B-L and it means front. This is then carried in time or space or any plain of thought. If it is in time, then front means before, while place would be in front. It is used to mean acceptance and reception since we receive and accept using our fronts. QABEELU are people who form a front together, as in tribe or some form of association. HU means him and points to Satan

TARAWNAHUM is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of seeing the object (HUM =them) is happening or will be happening by the subject (second person plural)

jaAAalna: made/designated
Note: JaAAaLNA is derived from the root J-Ain-L and it means making, forming or transforming something that already exists. Conceptually, it takes the meaning of transformation more often than formation. JaAAaLNA is an action that is completed. It means: the action of making the object (ALSHSHAYATEEN= the devils) by the subject (first person plural). In here the making takes the meaning of designating and so on.

alshshayateena: Satans/ the ones that is displaced from God’s mercy and works on displacing others/ the devils.
Note: the root is SH-Ta-N and it means in one of the concrete meanings the long rope and in another the long rope at the well that one uses to get the bucket out of the water. The term is used to mean far and away (in all the planes of thought) as the long rope and it is also used for displacement or pulling away, as a parallel to the rope that pulls the bucked out of the water. ALSHSHAYATEEN are the ones who are far or away (from God’s mercy) and who works at pulling others away through his long “rope”. It is the word used from Satan or devils or any entity to which this designation applies.
Awliyaa: guardians/ directors
Note: the root is W-L-Y and it means direction or following direction with some guarantee. It comes close to guardianship. AWLIYAA is either the one who is a guardian or the one who receives guardianship of another or both. In this context, guardian and director apply.
Lillatheena: to those who
la yuminoona: do not trust/ do not make themselves safe (In Allah)
Note: LA is for negation of the action that comes next. YUMINOON is derived from the root Hamza-M-N and it means safety. Conceptually, it can also be extended to trust as well, because we feel safe in the entity we trust. LA YUMINOON is a negation of action that is happening or will be happening. It means the action of not becoming safe or trusting is happening by the subject (third person plural).
