يٰقَوْمِ لاۤ أَسْأَلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ أَجْراً إِنْ أَجْرِيَ إِلاَّ عَلَى ٱلَّذِي فَطَرَنِيۤ أَفَلاَ تَعْقِلُونَ

 

yāqawmi lā asalukum ʿalayhi ajran in ajriya illā ʿalā alladhī faṭaranī afalā taʿqilūna

 

The Aya says:

And my people, I do not ask you on it compensation.  My compensation is on the one who created me.  What do not you contemplate?!

 

My personal note:

He is telling them that he is not doing it for ulterior motives.  He is asking them to contemplate on that.

 

Translation of the transliterated words:

 

Yāqawmi: O my people

Note: YA is used for calling.  QAWMI is derived from the root Qaf-Y-M and it means standing or standing upright. QAWMI are the people that stand together and that makes the group or people or nation, basically, any group of people that stand together or form a group. YAQAWMI means O my people.

Lā: not

Asalukum: I ask you (plural)

Note: the root is S-Hamza-L and it means asking. It could be asking a question and it could be asking for help and so forth. AS’ALUKUM an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of asking the object (KUM= plural you) is happening or will be happening by the subject (first person singular).

 

ʿalayhi: uppon it/ for it

ajran : compensation

Note: Note: the root is Hamza-J-R and it means compensation for work done. Conceptually it is used to point to what the person receiving what they deserved. AJRAN means compensation of work or just compensation or reward of or dues of.

illā ʿalā: only on

alladhī: the one who

faṭaranī: created me/made me emerge

Note: the root is F-TTA-R and in concrete it is used when something opens and something comes out of it or inside of it or just opens with consequence and so on. Conceptually, it is used to mean break of the fast because then the mouth opens and food enters, but also any form of creation or birthing that happens when the womb opens and the baby comes out or the seed opens and the plant comes out. So, any form of creation of something from something else may apply. FATARA is an action that is completed. It means: the action of creating or causing the object (NI=me) to be born or to crack open and emerge happened by the subject (third person singular pointing to Allah)

Afalā: why not

taʿqilūna:  you (plural) contemplate/ you link/ you process

Note: the root is Ain-Qaf-L and it means tying the animal so that it does not go away. This is the concrete word, but it is also used for any restraint or putting things together as in tying the knot. The word is used for brain or thinking appropriately. That could be because either that one who thinks appropriately is restraining his thoughts from going astray, or that he is tying things together or both. TaAAQILOONA is an action that is being completed or will be completed and that is derived from the root. It means: the action of thinking/ contemplating appropriately or with restraint, is happening or will be happening by the subject (second person plural).  .
