مَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِهِ إِلَّا أَسْمَاءً سَمَّيْتُمُوهَا أَنتُمْ وَآبَاؤُكُم مَّا أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَانٍ ۚ إِنِ الْحُكْمُ إِلَّا لِلَّهِ ۚ أَمَرَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوا إِلَّا إِيَّاهُ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ الدِّينُ الْقَيِّمُ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

Ma taAAabudoona min doonihi illa asma’an sammaytumooha antum waaba’okum ma anzala Allahu biha min sultanin ini alhukmu illa lillahi amara alla taAAabudoo illa iyyahu thalika addeenu alqayyimu walakinna akthara aNnasi la yaAAlamoon

 

The Aya says:

You are not worshiping short of Him, except appellations you made up, you and your ancestors.  Allah did not bring down of it any proof.  The order is only Allah’s.  He ordered that you worship only Him.  This is the upstanding religion; however, most people do not know.

 

My personal note:

Here Joseph makes the case for monotheism in worship and that people make up all the other gods they worship other than Allah.

Note: ALNASSI is derived from the root Hamza-N-S and it means socializing. ALNNAS means the people or humans or the society.

Note: YaAALAMOON is derived from the root Ain-L-M and it means knowing/knowledge or knowledge of facts. YaAALAMOONA is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of knowing is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person plural).

يَا صَاحِبَيِ السِّجْنِ أَأَرْبَابٌ مُّتَفَرِّقُونَ خَيْرٌ أَمِ اللَّهُ الْوَاحِدُ الْقَهَّارُ

Ya āibayi assijni a’arbābun mutafarriqūna khayrun ami AlLāhu alwāidu alqahhār?!

 

The Aya says:

O two companions of the prison, are disparate lords better or Allah, the one, the victorious?!

 

My personal note:

Here Jospeh is presenting the case of monotheism is simpler and less confusing and you do not have to navigate with different fears or allegiances.

Note: SAHIBAYI is derived from the root Sad-Ha-B and it means companion or companionship. SAHIBAYI means two companions of.

 

Assijni: the Jail/ prison

a’arbābun: Nurturing lords?

وَٱتَّبَعْتُ مِلَّةَ ءَابَآءِىٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسْحَـٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ ۚ مَا كَانَ لَنَآ أَن نُّشْرِكَ بِٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍۢ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ مِن فَضْلِ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَشْكُرُونَ ٣٨

WattabaAAtu millata aba’ee ibraheema waishaqa wayaAAqooba ma kana lana an nushrika billahi min shay’in thalika min fadli Allahi AAalayna waAAala annasi walakinna akthara annasi la yashkuroon

 

The Aya says:

And I followed religion of my ancestors, Abraham and Isaaq and Jacob.  It is not for us to worship any entity with Allah.  This is from the generosity of Allah upon us and upon the people.  However, most of the people are not grateful.

 

My personal note:

Joseph here continues discussing his belief system before explaining their dreams.  He related his belief system to his father, grandfather and great grandfather.  He also emphasized that monotheism is a blessing to his family and humanity and the need for all people to act in gratefulness to Allah’s blessings on us.
