12:39

يَا صَاحِبَيِ السِّجْنِ أَأَرْبَابٌ مُّتَفَرِّقُونَ خَيْرٌ أَمِ اللَّهُ الْوَاحِدُ الْقَهَّارُ

Ya āibayi assijni a’arbābun mutafarriqūna khayrun ami AlLāhu alwāidu alqahhār?!

The Aya says:

O two companions of the prison, are disparate lords better or Allah, the one, the victorious?!

My personal note:

Here Jospeh is presenting the case of monotheism is simpler and less confusing and you do not have to navigate with different fears or allegiances.

Translation of the transliterated words:

Ya: O

āibayi: two companions of

Note: SAHIBAYI is derived from the root Sad-Ha-B and it means companion or companionship. SAHIBAYI means two companions of.

Assijni: the Jail/ prison

Note: the root is S-J-N and it means prison or captivity or being held in a place you cannot get out of.  ASSIJN means the jail/ prison/ captivity.

a’arbābun: Nurturing lords?

Note: RABB is derived from the root R-B-B and it means nurturing and Lordship as two components of the meaning that can be present together or one at a time according to the context of the sentence.   A’ARBABUN is question and a rhetorical statement.  It means: Several lords?!.

Mutafarriqūna: separate/ divergent/ disparate

Note: the root F-R-Qaf and it means separating apart or dispersing. MUTAFARRIQOON means separate/ apart/ divergent/ disparate.

Khayrun: better/ preferred

Note: the root KH-Y-R and it means choice/ preferrence. It is also understood as good or as better, because one would chose the good over the bad. KHAYRUN means: Good or something that is preferred,  In this context there is a comparison.

Ami: Or

AlLāhu: Allah

alwāidu: the one

Note: the root is W-Ha-D and it means one. ALWAHID means the one.

alqahhār?!: The victorious/ the dominating

Note: the root is Qaf-H-R and it means victory of one entity upon another in case of dispute or fight and clearly establishing dominion and authority. ALQAHHAR means the victorious/ the dominating.

Salaam all and have a great day

Hussein
