10:36

وَمَا يَتَّبِعُ أَكْثَرُهُمْ إِلاَّ ظَنّاً إِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لاَ يُغْنِي مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ شَيْئاً إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَيمٌ بِمَا يَفْعَلُونَ 

 

wamā yattabiʿu aktharuhum illā annan inna l-ana lā yugh`nī mina l-aqi shayan inna l-laha ʿalīmun bimā yafʿalūna

 

The Aya says:

And the majority of them do not follow but speculation.  Indeed speculation does not prevail over fact.  Indeed Allah is well aware of what they do.

 

My personal note:

The Aya compares two important things.  They are at the core of human error and confusion.  It is the issue of THANN which is defined as conclusions that are not one hundred percent proven therefore covers speculation/ theory and so on.  It contrasts it with HAQQ which is defined as truth and binding truth and so on.  So, one can say HAQQ is fact while THANN is speculation.  The Aya is not against speculation per se.  Because we have to speculate often and that is the basis of our human development and progress.  The Aya however points out that if speculation is clashing with fact then Fact prevails and that is what science says.  This kind of statement is repeated often in the Quran.

 

Translation of the transliterated words:

wamā: and not

yattabiʿu: they follow/ they join and follow

Note: YATTABiAAu is derived from the root T-B-Ain and it means following footsteps or join and follow footsteps. YATTABiAAu is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of joining and following an object (THANNAN=presumptions) is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person plural).

 

Aktharuhum: the majority of them

Note: AKTHARA is derived from the root K-TH-R and it means many or numerous in all the planes of Uthought. AKTHARUHUM means: the bigger number of them and that means the majority of them or most of them.

Illā: except

annan: assumptions/ presumptions

Note:  THANNAN is derived from the root THA-N-N and it means conclusion without certainty or conclusion without verification. Therefore, it includes theory, prediction, suspicion/ assumption/ presumption and all thoughts that are not conclusively proven as facts.

Inna: indeed

l-ana: the assumption

Note:  ALTHANNA is derived from the root THA-N-N and it means conclusion without certainty or conclusion without verification. Therefore, it includes theory, prediction, suspicion/ assumption/ presumption and all thoughts that are not conclusively proven as facts.  ALTHANNAa is the theory/ assumption/ presumption and so on.

 

lā yugh`nī: Does not negate/ cannot supersede

Note: LA is for negation of the action coming after.  Yughni is derived from the root Ghain-N-Y and it means freedom from need in any of it’s forms. The word is used to mean rich, because the rich has less needs or no financial need or no need for assistance. LA YUGHNI means does not negate or does not take away or cannot supersede.

Mina: from

l-aqi: the binding truth/ the fact

Note: ALHAQQI is derived from the root Note: the root is Ha-Qaf-Qaf and it means binding right where right means correct as well s what is due to one person (rights and obligations). ALHAQQ means binding right or binding truth.  In this context it points to the fact.

 

Shayan: a thing

Note: the root is SH-Y-Hamza and it means entity for noun and to entity for the action. This means making a non entity become an entity, which also means making what was impossible possible, or what was non existent, existent or what was un-allowed allowed, and so forth.  SHAYAN means a thing or an entity.

Inna: indeed

l-laha: Allah

ʿalīmun:  Very aware/ Very knowing

Note: the root is Ain-L-M and it means knowing/knowledge or knowledge of facts. ALEEMUN means very knowing or very aware.

 

 Bimā: in what

bima: by what

Note: BI signifies an attachment or close linkage between what is before and what is after it.  In a Verbal sentence it can mean attachment to the action or to the subject as it does the action.  This attachment can then signify many things according to the verb and to the sentence and so on.  In this sentence it signifies tools of why they were taken.

 

yafʿalūna:  they do

Note: YAFAAaLOONA is derived from the root F-Ain-L and it means doing. YAFAAaLOONA is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of doing is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person plural)
