Wamin qawmi moosa ommatun yahdoona bialhaqqi wabihi yaAAdiloona

The Aya says:
And of the people of Moses a group that guides by the binding truth and through it they live justly

My personal note:
The term QAWM points to a group that is grouped together either by a person or geography or so and so. However, the term UMMa always points to a group that shares same ideas and ideals and outlook on life and guiding principles. In a sense the term UMMA can be used to point any movement of humanity.

The Aya is important in that it reminds muslims and non muslims that the Qur'an does remind us of good qualities and praise to at least a subgroup of the followers of Moses.

Translation of the transliterated words:
Wamin: and of
qawmi: people of/ group of
Note: the root is Qaf-Y-M and it means standing or standing upright. ALQAWM are the people that stand together and that makes the group or people or nation, basically, any group of people that stand together based on location rather than ideologiy or ideas. QAWMI means people of/ group of.
Moosa: Moses
Ommatun: a group/ a movement/ a subgroup/ a principled group
Note: OMMA is derived from the root Hamza-M-M and it means mother or sources/origin if said as UMM and destination if said as AMM. OMMA means in this context nation and that is because it is a group that have the same origin and is moving to the same destination. In a sense they have some shared beliefs and principles on which they move, very much like a movement or a subgroup that is united in common beliefs, actions and principles.

Yahdoona: they guide/ they lead to guidance
Note: YAHDOONA is derived from the root H-D-Y and it means gift in all it’s forms and it carries the meaning of guidance since guidance is a gift. YAHDOONA is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means: the action of guiding is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person plural).

Bialhaqqi: by the binding truth/ by the binding right

YAAaDILOONA is an action that is being completed or will be completed. It means the equitable exchange is happening or will be happening by the subject (third person plural) to the object (BiHI= by him , the binding truth). In this context it points to all their dealings and behaviours include equitabile exchanges and justice.

The Aya says:
Say (O Muhammad): “O people, I am Allah’s envoy to you all, who has authority of the heavens and the earth, there is no one worthy of worship but Him, He gives life and He makes die.” So, make safety (to yourselves, but also to others) by Allah and His envoy the unbooked prophet who makes safety by Allah and His statements, and join/ follow him, perhaps you lead yourselves to guidance.
My personal note:
The Aya points that Muhammad upon him be peace was sent to all society that receives the message and the essence of the message is to make the person who receive the message safe through Allah and His messenger but also to make that person contribute to the safety of the whole environment around him not only to himself/ herself, but to everyone around. It is a message of safety and peace and Allah aims for humanity’s benefit from it in this life and the next.

The Aya says:
The ones who join and follow the envoy, the unbooked prophet that they find documented with them in the Torah and Evangile. He enjoins them by what is recognized as good and asks to desist from what is not, and permits for them the good and prohibits the bad and he relieves them from the extra burdens and the restrictions that were imposed upon them. So, those who cause safety through him and supported him and aided him and joined and followed the light that was brought down with him, those are the ones who cause success.
My personal note:
The Aya continues the response to Moses and further defines the people mentioned earlier. It describes them as the people who join and follow the unbooked prophet. Of course two questions arise here:
1- What about the people who came before he was sent? The answer is that they do what is asked of them and aniticipate him.
2- Was he actually documented in the books before us? The Aya says yes.

The Aya also indicates some of the functions that he will do and that is limit the prohibitions to things that are inherently bad to humanity as a general rule or whose bad exceeds the potential for good for humanity. So, in Islam nothing is prohibited for only a test of allegiance or for other causes. Everything that is enjoined is good and everything that is prohibited is bad for humanity. One may ask why such things are created if they are bad or their bad exceeds their good and the answer is that they are prohibited from human consumption but may serve important functions for the other creatures on earth and so they serve an important presence but not for humans. As such they may serve humans in indirect ways through the rest of creation somehow.

I also translated two words a little differently here, I translated AMANOO bihi as cause safety by him/ through him and that is how the verb is understood but with the understanding is that they cause safety primarily to themselves but also opens the door to causing safety to others because following the message of Islam is not only aimed to benefit the person but the community and the wider humanity. I also translated muflihoon as those who cause success the same way because the verb has the same form and it is understood in the same manner.

Waoktub lana fee hathihi alddunya hasanatan wafee alakhirati inna hudna ilayka qala AAathabee oseebu bihi man ashao warahmatee wasiAAat kulla shayin fasaaktubuha lillatheena yattaqoona wayutoona alzzakata waallatheena hum biayatina yuminoona

The Aya says:
And mandate for us in this life a beauty and in the next one. We indeed repented to You. He (Allah) responded: “My punishment I touch with it whoever I will and my Grace easily encompassed everything. So, I will mandate it to those who act consciously and provide fruitfulness and those who cause safety/ trust by our signs.
My personal note:
The Aya gives Moses a very important indication and that is Allah’s grace and mercy are not haphazard. They are mandated to people who fulfil certain criteria and work on themselves. The criteria are act with consciousness and conscience of Allah and providing fruitfulness which includes charity and any form of sharing whether knowledge, a smile and whatever and those two criteria are included in those who provide safety and trust through Allah signs. The safety and trust that they cause are mainly for themselves but also for all of humanity and that is the essence of a person with Iman, they are safe and trusting in Allah and they seek His help and use His instructions in making themselves safer and more trustworthy and also making the whole world safer to all who are in it. May Allah help us in this endeavor.

The Aya says:
And Moses chose of his people seventy men to our appointed meeting. So when the tremble took them he said: “My nurturing Lord, if you willed you would have made them perish from before and me. Do you make us perish by what the shallow thinking amongst us did?! It is nothing but your test, you make go astray by it whoever You will and guide whoever You will. You are our guardian so provide protective cover for us and grace us and you are the best of protectors”.
My personal note:
Moses asks the question of whether Allah make others suffer because of the acts of the shallow thinking in the group do. There was no answer to the question but Moses did conclude that we are tested in so many ways and one of those ways is how we react to the acts of those are shallow and stupid in their acts. It suggests that the society needs to restrain the acts of those who do things in contrary to the teachings of Allah within reason and understanding and with lots of patience and forgiveness.

The aya says:
And when the anger abated from Moses he picked up the tablets and in their copy guidance and mercy to those who are in awe of their nurturing Lord.
My personal note:
This is a very important message and statement that the message of God is always a source of not only guidance but also mercy and Grace and a path to good life in the shadow of God’s love and in harmony with His path. May Allah always open our hearts to His messages and open our minds to understand them and take them at heart.

The Aya says:
And those who committed the bad deeds then they repented and made themselves safe (in Allah) after that, indeed your nurturing Lord after that is forgiving, merciful.
My personal note:
The Aya comes immediately after bringing the punishment for the people who took the calf for worship. It reminds us that it is never too late to repent and strengthen our safety and trust in Allah for He is indeed our Nurturer, protector and graceful, merciful helper always as we seek Him and return to Him. The only time that it is late is when death is present.

Inna allatheena ittakhathoo alAAijla sayanaluhum ghadabun min rabbihim wathillatun fee alhayati alddunya wakathalika najzee almuftareena

The Aya says:
Indeed those who took the calf (to worship) will reach them manifest displeasure from their nurturing Lord and humiliation in this life and as such we pay back the ones who make up falsehood.
My personal note:
The Aya is a reminder that when we concoct and make up things then we are going to be punished in this life and will be humiliated. May Allah protect us from making up false claims concerning Allah and His message.

It means: the action of paying back is happening or going to happen to the object (ALMUJRIMEEN= the criminals) by the subject (first person plural)
Almuftareena: the concoctors/ the makers of falsehood

Note: the root is F-R-W and it means the furr or the animal or the skin that is normally covered with hair. This word is used when people are concocting things and making things up that are not true. It could be related to the action of cutting the skin apart or making things up as in making a dress out of the skin and so forth. ALMUFTAREEN are the ones that make up falsehoods.
