2:112

Salaam all,

This is 2:112
بَلَى مَنْ أَسْلَمَ وَجْهَهُ للَّهِ وَهُوَ مُحْسِنٌ فَلَهُ أَجْرُهُ عِندَ رَبِّهِ وَلاَ خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلاَ هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ
Bala man aslama wajhahu lillahiwahuwa muhsinun falahu ajruhu AAinda rabbihi walakhawfun AAalayhim wala hum yahzanoona

The Aya says:
No, but whoever dissociates his face (direction, reception, acceptance and whole) from bonds and from harm to (bond to) The GOD while causing goodness. So, he has his compensation at his nurturer's, and there is no fear on them and they will not become sad.

My personal note:
This AYA is of great importance because it touches what a Muslim is. According to my understanding here, It is the person that dissociates his/her direction/whole/reception/acceptance from bonds and from harm in order to bond to the GOD. Therefore it is a totally voluntary act of dissociation from the bonds that prevent us from doing so. It is also a dissociation from Harm and therefore a peaceful transition in all it’s aspects

Translation of the transliterated words:
Bala: No, but
Note: this is a term that is used to make a point of disagreement.
Man: Who/whoever
Aslama: makes dissociated from harm (of any nature) and/or bonds (to form another)
Note: the root is S-L-M and it means to become dissociated from harm of all it’s kinds or/and to dissociate from a bond to form another. ASLAM is the third person singular past tense of a verb that is derived from the root. It means to make (something or someone) dissociated from harm or from a bond in order to make another or both meanings at the same time.
Wajhahu: His face/his direction/his reception/his whole
Note: the root is W-J-H and the concrete meaning of the word is Face. In abstract it can mean direction, reception because the face is what receives people as well as whole. In this area the abstract meaning is the one to understand.
Lillahi: To the GOD
Wahuwa: And he/ While he
Muhsinun: making beauty/goodness
Note: the root is Ha-S-N and it means beauty in all it’s meaning (inside and out and goodness as well) . MUHSIN is the one that makes or causes beauty.
Falahu: So, he will have
Ajruhu: compensation
Note: the root is Hamza-J-R and it means to compensate for services or goods. The noun means compensation for services or goods or just compensation.
AAinda: At
Rabbihi: His nurturer
Note: the root is R-B-B and it means to nurture for the verb. For the noun it means nurtrurere. HI means His.
Walakhawfun: And no fear
Note: WA means and. LA means no. KHAWFUN is derived from the root KH-W-F and it means to become afraid for the verb and fear for the noun. KHAWF is fear.
AAalayhim: On them
Wala: And not/And no
Hum: Them
Yahzanoona: Become sad/will become sad
Note: the root is Ha-Z-N and it means to become sad for the verb and Saddness for the noun. YAHZANOON is the third person plural present or future tense of the verb.

I went back to this today. I found it interesting that you have not used "self" as a translation of "wajh"/synonym for "face", direction" and so forth.

Is your use of "whole" here to be taken to mean "whole being"?

You know that you are posting on something that I posted a long time ago and that I changed in my knowledge, way of thinking and also understanding. I am not certain why I chose whole but I would not use self for WAJH. Self would be what I would use for the term NAFS. One reason is that the face is the place of conscious control of direction for the whole body and therefore it can be used for reception, direction and approval, Wa Allahu Aalam.

Thanks very much for your reply brother Dr. Hussein.

I have heard it said that one of the benefits of writing about something is that, in the process, the writer gets to know the subject more.I believe that it is true.

As you continue with this massive project you are probably learning more about Qur`aanic terminology; and revising and expanding on what you were taught in your traditional Islamic background.

This happens to many of us insha Allah, with some strange twists in this “new world” context of the US.
